Buddy may have been influenced by Elvis and others of his time, but the quality of the music determines who is king. I happen to think Elvis was trash and I know alot of other folks who feel the same way. To post comments praising Elvis on a Buddy Holly thread is very distasteful and disrespectful to a brilliant young musician who died at a young age in a plane crash. Please show a little respect. Elvis couldn't sing or play guitar, just shake his booty to the screams of young girls.
@65rock4ever I totally agree with you ! Elvis was a Hollywood sex symbol. I tried to get into his songs but there was nothing there. Buddy Holly played real genuine and original music. Like you said, Buddy Holly is the real king of rock & roll. It's terrible he had to die at such a young age. My sympathy goes out to his family, friends and everyone who knew him.
This is a Buddy Holly song. I'm sure there are many Elvis songs available where those who worship him can post comments about how great he was. Buddy died at a young age and never had the chance to pursue his music career like Elvis and others did. Considering his short time span it amazes me how much great music he played and sang. Learning how to play guitar has given me a respect for Buddy that I cannot say about other musicians from the 50's.
@65rock4ever Cool. Now can we stop comparing amazing people and just listen to the beautiful music? This whole "Budde was king. Elvis was whatever" stuff is annoying.
I'm young but I love this music. I actually got to see a tribute show of them last night.. Buddy Holly, Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. It was fairly good.. And the person who sang Big Bopper's songs was his song.... It was a very good song and i think there was only 5-6 songs out of the whole hour that I didn't know... My sister and cousins make fun of me for liking the old time music but I LOVE it...
@TheLang0lier As Elvis often said when asked about comparisons and competition, 'There's room for everyone'. Elvis and Buddy were true greats of music, just a shame we didn't have them for very long. Can you imagine what Buddy would have achieved if he'd hadn't died at such a young age? 22 he was only starting out :(
@hirdy6 Yeahh :'( :'( </3 But I Still appreciate Every bit he had accomplished before he died. And I Believe that I always will <3 Long live Buddy Holly.
@Geodude123man the day after buddy saw the king play in texas he went to his band and said we gotta give up this western style and start playing "Elvis Music" as he referred to it, like you said, Elvis is the King, thank god Buddy saw that too and went on to play some great Rock and Roll because of it!
@Geodude123man You say Elvis is King. You need to remember in the 1950s Elvis was singing only gospel and country music. It wasnt until after Buddy passed away that he started singing rock and roll and became the King of rock and roll.
@reinhold51775 Remmeber Buddy and the crickets started out wanting to sing country with the rockabilly sound. It was thier sound and style that moveed it to rock and roll. He truly was a pioneer of rock and roll and actually one of the first cross over stars that we see so often today. Buddy Holly is and always will be a legend.
Still a great record, but, for me too, the original version without the string-effect overdub was better, as on the flip-side of the single, "Love's Made A Fool of You", which was released in the UK in 1964. From reading biographies of Holly, I learned that "You're The One" was recorded informally at a local radio station in Lubbock, when Buddy was home for Christmas, 1958....
Actually those are NOT natural strings, but a string setting on one of Norman Petty's many Baldwin organs. This was overdubbed a bit early (1968) for a synth to have been used. I also prefer the original basic vocal/guitar/handclap version. Cheers
Elvis was pretty to look at and all but he couldn't carry Buddy Holly's jock strap talent wise!

Buddy could say so much in so few words. Amazing. I love Bob Dylan, but it takes Dylan 3 times more words to convey as compared to Buddy.
