Germany problem was they had no strategic 4 engine long range bombers That was one of the nazis big mistakes, not developing a long range bomber among other things.
If the Nazis set internal regime failures in Romania and Bulgaria they would have the grain and oil needed for extended war. They could have set the system to fail as was done in Austria. Developement of the Atomic bomb and missle program could have been done. They were so close to total takeover. The Barbarrosa campaign ended with a two front war and certain defeat.

Stalin executed the majority of his trained front-line officers and terrorized the rest. He was also willfully blind to Hitler's buildup on his frontier and all intelligence warning of a coming German invasion.

Britain and France declared war for Poland, yet neither one came to the help of Poland or even tried. So they declared war and did nothing until so whats the point? The Germans just wanted Russia, Hitler even offered Britain peace just to stay out of the war and they could keep their Kingdom. Churchill refused and decided on a global conflict he could of saved a lot of lives.

@August1082011 You are incorrect. To begin with, the Americans arrived in the war very late, at which point the British had already destroyed Hitler's chance of dominating the air and sea. However, had the British not being in the war, nor the American's or the Canadians or any of the allied forces, the Russians would have faced Hitler alone and would have certainly lost. By 1942, the German's almost took Stalingrad, had Germany concentrated all its forces there, they would have won.

If you look at the ratio of casualties to troop advantage, you will find that the German's lost far fewer men than the Russians. At Kursk, the Russians outnumbered the Germans more than 2 to 1, and yet after the battle, neither side had gained any ground. People underestimate the strength of the Germans because they were split up on multiple fronts.

Total WWII death tally, all sides, approximately 52 million - Soviet dead estimated to be 20-25 million (including civilians). Germany lost about 8-9 million dead in total by war's end. There's been nothing like it since and for that we are truly grateful.

Artillery batteries firing millions of tons of shells, planes dropping millions of tons of bombs, 1000s of tanks rolling through the plains, millions of infantry involved in crack street fights. Interesting that Croatian troops are mentioned at 7:30. I knew Germans had a few Hungarians and Rumanians fighting in southern Russia, but I had never heard of any Croatians in Russia. I knew that Croatians were German allies against Tito's partisans in Yugoslavia and were called Chetniks. I just never knew they fought in Russia.

Of the 3 daily meals, only one was considered as approaching sufficient and even this consisted of only half of the required amount to sustain even rear echelon troops.

On the 17th of December, 1942, the Volga River froze sufficiently to allow the Soviets to open another front from that side of the city as well,

This was one of the most brutal battles of WW 2. Stalin sent in NKVD reinforcements to hold the city, but the Waffen SS still took the city after weeks of brutal fighting. Prisoners were killed outright by both sides. It was a merciless battle,that opened the gate to the Caucus mountain oil reserves.

If the Nazis set internal regime failures in Romania and Bulgaria they would have the grain and oil needed for extended war. They could have set the system to fail as was done in Austria. Developement of the Atomic bomb and missle program could have been done. They were so close to total takeover. The Barbarrosa campaign ended with a two front war and certain defeat.

Stalin executed the majority of his trained front-line officers and terrorized the rest. He was also willfully blind to Hitler's buildup on his frontier and all intelligence warning of a coming German invasion.
All things considered, the Reds used retreat, distance, time and weather to draw Hitler deeper into a German graveyard of his own making.

Britain and France declared war for Poland, yet neither one came to the help of Poland or even tried. So they declared war and did nothing until so whats the point? The Germans just wanted Russia, Hitler even offered Britain peace just to stay out of the war and they could keep their Kingdom. Churchill refused and decided on a global conflict he could of saved a lot of lives.

@August1082011 You are incorrect. To begin with, the Americans arrived in the war very late, at which point the British had already destroyed Hitler's chance of dominating the air and sea. However, had the British not being in the war, nor the American's or the Canadians or any of the allied forces, the Russians would have faced Hitler alone and would have certainly lost. By 1942, the German's almost took Stalingrad, had Germany concentrated all its forces there, they would have won.

If you look at the ratio of casualties to troop advantage, you will find that the German's lost far fewer men than the Russians. At Kursk, the Russians outnumbered the Germans more than 2 to 1, and yet after the battle, neither side had gained any ground. People underestimate the strength of the Germans because they were split up on multiple fronts.

In summary, the war on the Eastern front was very close to being won by Germany in 1942 at the Battle of Stalingrad. You talk as if Russia won by a long shot, when in reality they were one step from being ruined. The Russians beat the Japanese easily because by then the Amercian's had already defeated them, that's not hard to see. You need to do some reading.

@Leshij123 I agree that trogrld went overboard there but let`s be realistic, the axis forces had pushed almost into Moscow, and even then the axis didnt have the element of surprise (As they went Stalingrad before Moscow as you know) Russia, Germany and Finland all took turns kicking ass.
Remember the Finnish were pretty pissed off because of the Winter of `39 same as the Russians were about `41! In the end it all worked out and Finland/Russia had a few drinks together :)

Total WWII death tally, all sides, approximately 52 million - Soviet dead estimated to be 20-25 million (including civilians). Germany lost about 8-9 million dead in total by war's end. There's been nothing like it since and for that we are truly grateful.

Artillery batteries firing millions of tons of shells, planes dropping millions of tons of bombs, 1000s of tanks rolling through the plains, millions of infantry involved in crack street fights. Iraq and Afghanistan are 1/billionth of what was happening in a single district in Europe during WW2. Not even Vietnam comes close ! Not every country can do that.

The germans were as pompus and full of themselves as much as the Americans were before going to Iraq...fighthing very inferior, disorgaznized armies already weakened by Staline's purges, shoothing women and children...the one that survived (mostly civilians) were then shot on the spot by special units of the ss...later in the war they faced better organization and they folded like butter, retreating y the thoudsand...hope the world will not forget the atrocities commited...

Interesting that Croatian troops are mentioned at 7:30. I knew Germans had a few Hungarians and Rumanians fighting in southern Russia, but I had never heard of any Croatians in Russia. I knew that Croatians were German allies against Tito's partisans in Yugoslavia and were called Chetniks. I just never knew they fought in Russia.

By the 13th of October 1942, the 369th Regiment was down to one weak battalion and 2 frail independent companies. Food was carefully rationed and comprised only 120 grams of horse meat per meal, along with whatever bread was available. Of the 3 daily meals, only one was considered as approaching sufficient and even this consisted of only half of the required amount to sustain even rear echelon troops.

Marko Mesić, surrendered to the Soviets on February 2, 1943 at the building of the Soviet Airforce Academy in what was left of the city of Stalingrad. @teller121 The 4. Fighter Wing served as a part of III/JG52. It was reorganised Jan 1942, due to the shortage of fighter planes, as the Reinforced 10. Fighter Squadron (Ojacano 10. Lovacko Jato), and again in Apr 1945, this time as Dzal's Fighter Wing (Lovacka Skupina Dzal) while the Germans called it 15/JG52. The Fighter Wing scored a total of 263 kills. The 5.Bomber Wing arrived at the Eastern Front Oct 1941 It returned to Croatia after having flown a total of 1.332 combat missions.

@teller121 Croatian Naval Legion fought together with Kriegsmarine on Black sea and Croatian troops fought on Krimea peninsula and in Sevastopol. Chetniks were Serbian sloughters and rebels against Independent State of Croatia.

@darkwonder80 That changes. In the gulags, they were about 9'000'000, but parts of them just dying by hunger and cold; well, the Finnish army and so on is not part of that. And then, there's still a number that nobody knows who were killed as prisoners out of camps - Katyn seems to make just a part of it.

another point in "history) was that many jews in 1918-1919 revolted and many germans (i am a native) could get the view of "hey are comrades stabbed us in the back" and militarily germany was turning the tide or even winning on half the fronts of ww1, so its really a chain reaction and history is often redone by the suppossed "winner" (another lie). yeah can make quite a few people angry. and plus stalin was way worse.

This was one of the most brutal battles of WW 2. Stalin sent in NKVD reinforcements to hold the city, but the Waffen SS still took the city after weeks of brutal fighting. Prisoners were killed outright by both sides. It was a merciless battle,that opened the gate to the Caucus mountain oil reserves.

More specifically, I quite recall the episode of Hitler accusing Jews of supporting allies occupy Koblenz and turning against Fierkorps who were fighting the occupation. Fierkorps went on to become the SA, the mother to the SS.

@Attila709 Not absolutely. Rostov opened to Hitler gate to Caucasus, to oil and Turkey. After Rostov Stalingrad, behind it - only steppe, behind steppe - Siberia was last big city. Hitler was mistaken, having attacked after Rostov simultaneously caucasus and on Stalingrad

@Attila709 Now has understood your question and I can tell that you are right. Almost simultaneously with Rostov Sevastopol has been completely grasped. Rostov is interesting still to that is the first big city which managed to be released completely (in December 1941). In July 1942 Germans have grasped it already in the second time
