  • His name was Joseph, not John.

  • The music that's playing while we're looking over the card church. I've heard it from Platoon. What is it called?

  • @SamhainTheDark It's called Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. A beautiful piece of music.

  • @cuznvinnie818 Yes, it is. Thank you for telling me.

  • I'm curious to know how does he die having to sleep normally??

  • @Nutbuster360 Mr. Treves performed an autopsy. Apparently, his head weighed too much and his neck dislocated. That's why he had to sleep sitting up in previous scenes.

  • @SamhainTheDark ...ohhhh ok that would make sense. i also heard that because of his countless tumors, that caused his death when he slept normal?

  • Did anyone else notice Frederick Treves was in both sides of the Cast List?

One at 6:25 and the other at 6:43.

  • @Chu4eon The real Frederick Treves' grandnephew, also called Frederick, appeared as a carnival hand during an opening scene.

  • So so so appreciative that you posted these videos.

  • i'm just curious, knowing that by sleeping lying down would cause him to suffocate, did Merrick commit suicide?

  • @PrinceRavensword I read that he slept laying down because he wanted to be like other people. I guess they're telling us that because before he did it he looked at the picture of himself laying down and he wanted to be like the picture. .

  • An angel sent from heaven :)

  • With all the pain he went through it is good to know that he had love before he died and when he died it was quick. Man I cry every time I see the ending.

  • I must say, as a 22 year old man, i am in no way ashamed to say that i started crying when john looked at that picture on the wall. I knew what was coming, then when he started moving the pillows...Im actually writing this with tears in my eyes. Here is a man, with the worst deformity possibly ever, and he felt content in his life. God i wish i could have met him.

Rest in eternal bliss Joeseph/John Merrick, you were something special.

  • thanks so much 4 posting :)

  • this movie always makes me cry i wish i could of met john merick and took him for a drink down the pub :)

  • this is so touching when i first saw this movie i started to cry ..

  • The extraordinary acting, vague details only people with great eyes can catch, and this death.....Everything about this movie was perfect. I could not think of a sweeter end to any film such as this, and yet...In this era of time, the movies created now just cannot compare to anything a movie in this time. We. who have technology far greater than that time. It's just, wow. I congratulate my AP English Lit teacher for showing to the class this amazing movie. Even if he kept pausing the movie. Grr

  • Wow!! totally grabs ur heart. Mask was good, but this is in a class all it's own. Really makes me take a second thought about the crap i've complained about. Some one in his position can love and appreciate life even with all the pain he endured. It was painful to watch let alone live and yet he LIVED. Anyone who has ever felt inadequate for any reason needs to see this. They'll be changed forever.

  • it makes you thank you are not the ugliest rip john merrick.

  • The words at the end are from the Lord Alfred Tennyson poem, "Nothing Will Die." Tennyson lived at the time of the John Merrick. One more perfect touch for this perfect film from Director David Lynch and Producer Mel Brooks.

  • I loved it. And I'm so happy its on youtube so I've finally been able to see it! :)

  • samuel barber composed this piece..Adaigo i think its called.

  • THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!

I can honestly say that this film gets 10 out of 10. acting was great, cinematography, and make up, John Hurt is great. To Joseph Merrick your story has been told. now you are with your mother.

  • I AM NOT AN ANIMAL!.......cinema magic. love.

  • What a wonderful film

  • Take a good look around people. By human nature we all are drawn into the facination of something that is not of the norm. What you do with it judges you. The essance of a person is not dictated by their apperance but by the character of the individual. This is a classic pitorial of how people in general respond and act and it is disgusting. Next time have some compassion for a fellow human being.

  • "Nothing will die" because the life & memory of John Merrick will live in my heart forever. Rest In Peace John Merrick.

  • I cried. John was so sweet and kind :'(

  • great movie thanks for the upload

  • One of the most moving death scenes in cinema history to date. What makes this death so inspirational and emotional that stands out more than any other picture, is simply the fact that the John died peacefully, in his sleep, and without regret. the best way anyone can ever go through. There is no better feeling than what Merrick went through in his final moments. After all the complications in his life, in the end it all payed off...With acceptance and most importantly of all, with love.

  • its like the movie mask in a way -the rocky davis story.

  • @copnite12342 Yes, you are right. My good friend introduced this movie to me.

  • I can't imagine anyone on earth who could be more embraced with open arms by God than John Merrick. We can only hope that if there is such a thing as reincarnation that God bestows upon his soul in the next life all the things he so richly deserves.

  • Joseph Merrick often thought about how much better it might be to be "normal" well first........ normal is a demeaning condecending understatment. to me normal means nothing, joseph needn't not change and second........... for those of us whom are "normal" we are kind of (well i cant say what i need because im christian and this site bans unladilike language.) but summed up were kind of butt heads, in a matter of speaking. THERE IS NOOOOOOOO REASON TO CHANGE IT IS NEVER FOR THE "BETTER" so there

  • Can't help but shed a tear.

  • Wow, the pacing, the use of B&W, the excellent performances-- this film is just an absolute work of art.

  • john merrick was always happy every moment of his life and even through the bad years he found a way to get out those years

    Rest in Peace

btw i love the ending because it was sad and he wanted to normal and died slowly

  • Adagio for Strings was a great choice but the stars at the end looked strangely like my old Windows screensaver...

  • is that really how he died?

  • I still sobb everytime I see this movie ... so sad and touching.. Rest in our heavenly fathers arms John

  • Comment removed

  • @High5Brah Yes it is, as well as some of his belongings, like his cloak and mask, among other things.

  • He kills himself in the end?! Lame. Thanks for uploading these.

  • @dshrode16 it wasn't intentional he was just trying to sleep normally

  • this is the most sad and the most amazing movie i have ever seen.

thankyou so much for posting this. it was spectacular <3

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :'(

  • amazing movie. thanks for posting

  • I've never wept so much. I never knew a man like this existed. such a great and beautiful man. thank you so much for uploading it.

  • Thank you swistalb for uploading this. This has touched my heart. John is so inspiring. Only if i could have known him. :) Thanks!

  • adagio for strings touches the innermost chambers of the heart

  • This is truely an amazing film, wow, gosh, im just touched,

does anyone know the song and composer that is playing during thise scene??

  • Thank you for uploading this movie. It's such a great one, one I can watch over and over and never get tired of. Wish more people in the world were like the elephant man...maybe that's why his life had to be cut short, too perfect for this world...a world that could never understand him. Thanks again!!!!!

  • It's such a heart breaking sad film, but at the same time it's so beautiful! You can really tell that David Lynch poured his whole heart and soul into this film, they way it's so carefully directed and portrayed. I love the music, this last scene here with Adagio for the Strings is almost too hard to watch, I couldn't help but burst into tears. I love the Elephant Man! One of the best films ever made!

  • #2 I used to think humanity was hopeless, but thinking about it, could this really ever happen today? I suppose it could, but it would be far less likely. And the Dark Ages were even worse than this. I guess society really is improving. I've also never felt more grateful for my life. I feel arrogant for having ever thought once in my life that I've hit rock bottom when there are people in my life that care.

Anyways, sorry for the long post. And thank you for uploading!

  • @firedragonsage88 I know how you feel, really. Too bad more people didn't love and appreciate him more when he was around. Why does it always have to take something like this to happen to get people to realize just how precious life is and we should be so grateful that we have what we do?

  • #1 Normally I'm not an emotional person, but this movie really touched me. I cried several times watching this, that's never happened before. I even had to break out some tissues.

This story really portrayed a spectrum of humans. Some can be cruel and act horribly to another. And others can show great compassion. It's also nice to know light won over dark.

  • I have never ever ever cried this hard over a movie

  • Y_Y ' ' ' '

  • everytime i watch this movie i end up breaking down and crying through the whole movie. there are alot of evil people out in this world, im just glad at the end he met some of the good ones. soooo sad..

  • So sad, I cried at the end when i was 11 than after that i watched baby of mine from dumbo than after that i learned animal abuse in circuses! so "Sniff" Thank you Joseph, Rest in Peace!

  • I don't get why he died. Did he just want to sleep normally and he had the intention of dying or did he want to kill himself?

  • @Homestarrunner1210 he died of asphyxia, he is not suppose to sleep like he did at the end, he always slept upright.

  • Comment removed

  • @coolstir10 I know how he died. But he knew that if he were to sleep like that he would die, why did he do it anyway is what I don't understand.

  • @Homestarrunner1210 I read this. Merrick died on 11 April 1890, aged 27. The official cause of death was asphyxia, although Treves, who dissected the body, said that Merrick had died of a dislocated neck. He believed that Merrick—who had to sleep sitting up because of the weight of his head—had been attempting to sleep lying down, to "be like other people". The exact cause of Merrick's deformities is unclear.

  • @Homestarrunner1210 he wanted to be normal..in one part of the movie he said..i wish i could sleep like everyone else....

  • @Homestarrunner1210 I think this question is debatable...i wouldn't consider it suicide. He wanted to sleep like other people...I don't think he "wanted" to die.

  • Beautiful film..Something everyone ought to see because it really opens the eyes! Also in a world of so many unhappy people due to appearances it makes you realize how perfect you are

  • Comment removed

  • did he die in the end??

  • The tune is "asiago for strings "also used the movie Platoon.

  • I had forgotten that Barber's string music was used in this film. David Lynch is amazing.

  • how can i thank you enough for sharing this film!!!! i wish they showed this to kids in school these days - it would put a human face to anti-bullying campaigns. God bless J.Merrick.

  • tears just flood your eyes to see this movie

  • Thank you so much for adding this. I love old movies, and this may be my favorite.

  • I still think it's tragic, the only recognition or care he receives is out of pity. His mere presence is a burden to everyone around him. Never being able to love anyone, being alone in that sense for the rest of your life. The shame in having to hide your face - I think I'd rather kill myself, whatever good is provided can't equate to the torment. The only way I'd be able to cope with such a fate is if I was forever blind to all the wonderful things I was missing.

  • Its amazing. It goes to show that human beings can be kind and accepting. They just need to be given the opportunity to learn without being blinded by ignorance and fear. I don't know how accurate it was, but if those people in the hospital and in the theater and even the queen herself could be enlightened to accept Merrick as a human being, teaching love and tolerance might not be a lost cause.

  • This movie is devastatingly beautiful!

    thanz for posting this!

  • FINALLY a video with 0 dislikes! I can see why this movie was so highly regarded because even today 30 or so years after this film debuted people see the beautiful and inspiring tale and think it was worth their time. LOVED IT!

  • I loved this movie as a child and as an adult it has the same affect on me I would love to own this movie...thanks for posting it

  • I'm a grown man who's seen and lived through some heavy shit giving me some pretty tough skin and this movie just reduced me to tears and snotbubbles. I'm an atheist, but this ending and the ending of "Somewhere In Time" with Christopher "Superman" Reeves standing in Heaven just breaks me down so much. Although this ending is the more touching of the two.

  • @chaospoet I loved this comment :)

  • Oh, wow... Thank you so VERY much for downloading this movie. I don't think I thank you enough, actually. I found this so very heartbreaking., but very lovely. I agree with most people commenting on this that everyone needs to watch this movie at least once, because it has the power to change people just as it has made me think about life. I would have very much liked to have met Mr. Merrick, actually... I think this world would be better off if there was another man like him to learn from...

  • Lots of Christian imagery in this film... perhaps this was Lynch's way of portraying Merrick as a kind of Christ-like figure, strange and scorned. When he decided to finally "give in" by sleeping on his back, perhaps it was an act of "martyrdom" by dying for the perceived sin of being different in a singular, unified world of "normal" people.

Thanks so much for uploading... haven't seen this one in quite a bit!

  • Thank you for posting this. Truly a remarkable movie. As someone else posted earlier, more people should see this. Open their mind to be more kind to one another.

  • "The Elephant Man" is one of my all time favourite movies - I so appreciate the post!

  • that last scene....heartbreaking.....

  • I hope you guys know his mom was as bad as his dad.

  • This is such a beautiful piece of music. Your heart truly goes out for Mr. Merrick.

  • Thank you for posting this movie, I'd never seen it before and I'm very moved right now.

  • it's a sad but beautiful scene. How did this musical score get used for Platoon also?

  • I've never seen such a beautiful man with such a beautiful soul and so open a heart.I've noticed for some reason it's the outcasts who are the kindest people. because they've been shunned they accept everyone. so next time you go to school/work, and you see someone sitting in the corner who looks mean/sad/weird in some way sit with him/her. you'll find a person who's very bright and kind. he sits alone because he doesn't meet the social norms but he'll be the most loyal friend you'll ever have

  • @samyemma78 I loved this comment. You're so, so right. <3

  • thanks for sharing this, swiftalb.

  • John was a beuatiful man (pardon my spelling) when he went to the other side, i believe, that god gave him a face as beutaiful as his soul

  • masterful work of genius. I don't think there ever would be words to describe this movie, only memories and feelings that remain in the heart, and inspire.

  • That movie really made laugh, they don't make 'em like that anymore. I found it ironic that the only things no one will ever see, his cock and balls, are perfectly fine. If god does exist, this proves he is a prick

  • I've had a perfectly wonderful day in my garden and when I stopped I thought of the 'Elephant Man story'. I thought that I would like to end my day with this movie of a gentle man's journey through life. He lived with integrity and grace ...a superb example of living with dignity and simple elegance.

thank you ever so much for sharing ..and your sharing has inspired so many really ♥lovely♥ thoughtful comments ...merci! ...danke!

  • Beautiful movie, I'm nearly crying. Merrick needed a hug.

  • swiftalb,

thank you so much for posting this. i remember my parents watching this when i was younger but i never did. i sometimes have the stupid mindset to generalize old movies to be not worth watching...but this movie is fantastic, inspiring, and just lovely. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to post this.

  • @kuntryfriedchicken I am glad you like it. It is most definitely a humanizing movie. So little of thel media ever shows how touching, poignant, and understanding a person can be. I am always uplifted by reading the comments here. Thanks again.

  • @kuntryfriedchicken I am JUST like that. I usually dont watch black and white movies assuming its "boring". man i was wrong!!

  • @kuntryfriedchicken Did Enjoy the Movie Even, Though it was Sad Sometimes, A True Story of the Human Spirit! RIP John Merrick , You Will Always Be Remembered & Never Forgotten & You Inspire Others W/ Disabilities!

  • This movie will make you a better person. Thank you for posting!

  • This movie will make you a better person. Thanks for posting!

  • such an amazing film.

  • It is such a shame that he suffered for many years but it gives me a sense of comfort knowing that the doctor took him under his wing.

    Rest In Peace JOESPH Merrick.

Thats the only mistake they made.

  • this made me cry..

  • Best movie ever! Thanks for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish i could meet hem!

  • now this is a movie. not like the stupid vampire werewolf thats getting on my nerves now

  • R.I.P. John Merrick you are in heaven with your mother and God ♥

  • Love this movie, always have! I'm glad the last little bit of his life was wonderful. :)

  • If no one loves Mr. Merrick , God does.

  • @veeseee128 if god loves him why did he do that to him in the first place putting tumors all over him

the god theory is psychopathic and sociopathic if you ask me.

nothing created our universe it has always been here.

  • Why is everything God's fault!! Some things just happen and we don't know why they happen, they just do. And by the way, God is REAL. One day, you'll truly find out for yourself.

  • @dotmacis

Yes, God is real. People can have really healthy bodies but deformed souls and the opposite is also true as we see in this film.

And God know best why this happens.

  • @MightyTrust Amen to that, my friend!!!!! :o)

  • Prove god is real then. Do it.

  • @TormentedStatue im just sayin love the movie ^^

  • werd.

  • Yes... Truly is a Beautiful movie..

    it's like damn .... it's all

    just sad.

  • Yes he did die like that just from trying to be normal because so many asswholes made fun of him and his circus master beat him from being drunk, i think people out there should be nice in the world and not judge people

  • @aeropostale1017

This is an excellent movie, but quite a bit of it is ficticious, including the things you mentioned here. His life story is very interesting, check it out and you'll see much of what is shown in the movie is not true. I of course have no doubt he was made fun of all the time and was probably very depressed because of it.

  • did he really die like that? =[

  • It was a wonderful movie....Very moving I cried alot.. Thank you for uploading it for everyone to see.

  • It's just.......Wonderful.....I can't say anything.

  • I must buy a DVD of this movie. Its moving and powerful. Im glad John Merrick was shown love by even a few people with hearts of gold and love. Joseph Merrick youre an inspiration to many. RIP Merrick youre with God now :).

  • I do belive that this movie, the more people who see it the better the world will be.

  • This will always be a classic. They will never make another movie like it. They have long forgotten how to nor have the desire. My 1st time seeing it since 1980's.

  • Gracias para la peilicula mi amigo

  • the song in the background was made into a techno song. its sweet

  • i've seen it today for the 1st time and i think it s one of the most beautiful and moving movie i've ever seen

  • He should win a noble prize for the most kind, gentle and loving human in the world. I have never seen a man so kind in my life. God bless his soul. R.I.P. Joseph Merrick

  • Love it! Thanks for the movie.

  • one of the most beautiful and powerful film i have ever seen. thank you so much for the upload.

  • As you can see I am a respectful admirer of Mr Merrick. I agree with one and all that this is a beautiful film, despite being wildly inaccurate at times. It was also a courageous descision to bring this story to a wide audience. With all that happened to him, Joseph was a wonderful , gentle man, who only wanted to be like everyone else, and to find a woman who would love him. I cry everytime Merrick\Hurt removes those pillows...I hadn't seen this film for years. Thanks for posting and well done!

  • I cannot thank you enough for uploading this. It's been so long since I've seen such a beautiful a thing, as this movie. What a life, and what incomprehensible pain he must have felt. And yet how much we take for granted. A masterpiece. Again, thank you for this.

  • I am very grateful for yours and everyone else's comments. I thank you from the depths of my heart. I can't imagine how much crueler I would be had I not seen this movie and read all these wonderful comments.

  • @swiftalb Thank you so, so much for uploading this movie. I know I saw it before, but it's one of those movies I can never get tired of seeing. It's sobering, scary, delightful and heartwarming.

  • thanks so much for uploading this

the book was amazing & this movie was too!

  • this film, is so pure and honest, it is one of the best movies i have ever seen.

  • John Hurt is absolutly brilliant in this role. - - - - - - - -

    Rest in peace Joseph Merrick.

  • R.I.P

    and thx you =')

  • This is in My Opinion The best British film that has Ever been made, and I doubt it will never be matched by eny other film, it shows one Mans struggle against what we take for granted, "A normal Life".

Let his soul rest in eternal peace

  • @markcumbriauk well said this movie is a great picece of art it will never fade :)

  • @markcumbriauk Best English film ever made... by an American director....

  • people can learn so much from this film

  • hey swiftalb thank you SO much for posting this, its just heartbreakingly beautiful

thanks for taking the time to do it

its a movie that most people NEED to see

    thanks again.

  • You are beyond welcome. Forgive me if I did not thank every individual person who watched and commented. Anyways, I should be thanking all of you for the opportunity to upload this great movie and have all you wonderful people moved by it.

  • hey whats the soundtrack? is it gorecki?

Ive heard that piece in SO many films

  • Comment removed

  • the theme for john merrick's last sleep is also the main theme from the movie platoon.

  • Couldn't but notice how the sculpture he made reflected his life. First non existant, then starting to look good. When it was destroyed he was kidnapped and finally he finished it when his life was at its best.

    The whole script was brilliant.

  • Yea and the real deal sculpture is really good, it makes u think about how he was so good at art

  • yeah. I saw a video about the real john merrick. It was incredible he could do it with one hand.

  • This is my favorite film from my favorite director!!Lynch can show us the real heaven and hell in his movies!!

  • oh my God..the most touching movie ever..I salute John Merrick for being so strong..may he rest in peace..

..and fuck those shitheads who messed with him!

  • I fucking balled like a little girl when he died R.I.P.

  • spectacular movie.

    amazing performaces by all.

grand job with production, cast and crew. well done!

  • Amazing movie. Loved every bit of it, it left me devastated in tears at the last bit. What a poor flesh-shell made for such a grand gentleman.

  • one of the most touching movies I´ve ever seen -

thank you so much for posting - everyone deserves respect -

that´s a simple message, but it always has to be said again,

    nowadays as in the past

  • This is a great movie, even if some facts are twisted, like how the movie has him being abused and unhappy at the freakshow when there is no evidence he was abused and he left the freakshow because they became outlawed.Still an amazing film.

  • Amazing movie. Thank you very very much for sharing it with us.

  • This movie was incredible. Thank you SO much for posting this. Gawd, I'm crying! I'm so inspired right now.

OH, MY FAVORITE PART WAS WHEN MISS KENDELL CALLED HIM ROMEO...

  • @Suzaku812 I totally agree with you about the Miss Kendall/Romeo scene. To me, this scene is the very definition of what it is is like for one to be Loving or God-like. For Miss Kendall does not at all see "The Elephant Man".... she peers strait thru the flesh and sees only Mr. Merrick, the Loving soul. Anne Bancroft's performance in conveying this sentiment is ASTOUNDING.... her eyes and expressions say so much more than any dialog could ever say. This scene sets the standard for Love.

  • the greatest and most beautiful movie i've ever seen.i'm crying right now.Rest in Heaven John Marrick.
