  • The Beatles are for indie music nerds.

  • @sdbxnbbl91 the beatles are for people who know what music is

  • @beatlefan247 Whatever

  • @sdbxnbbl91 ;D truth hurts

  • I like Ian Hislop, but I very very strongly disagree with him. The Beatles are brilliant.

  • ex aston villa and england centre forward? does hislop hate football or something?

  • I'd love to see the out-takes from this episode. The thought of Ian and Paul chatting for half an hour makes you think - can we have this every week? ;o)

  • oh no, someone disagrees with my worldview. DEATH TO THE NON BELIEVER!

  • ha ha how can anyone not like The Beatles?!! it's like saying " I don't like breathing "!!!

  • @joannalexus1 This view contributes to Hislop's thoughts on The Beatles.

  • @ShanksDChopper lol are you that guy in the black and white clip eating the pie.....???!!!!! when something is the great it just is..... great.......

  • @joannalexus1 Nah, I personally like The Beatles. But Beatles and breathing are quite different things. =P It's just the same as me saying to someone "How can you not like comic books and call yourself a human?" It's a statement of my obsession but the two things really can't be linked like that. Says more about the person saying it than it does the person it's being said to.

  • I don't like The Beatles. Glad I'm not the only one.

  • That wig really suits Paul. I seem to remember he had hair like it once upon a time...

  • He really hates Jeffrey Archer, doesn't he? It's great!

  • ex Aston Villa and England forward??????

  • prick

  • I love Paul's reaction to Ian's wig XD

  • I never got the obsession with The Beatles, either. They may have been the early pioneers in the field of meaningless pop, but meaningless pop is what they produced. Sorry Beatles fans! :(

  • @catconstantine Listen to Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt Pepper then try and talk about 'meaningless pop'

  • I don't like the beatles, sorry guys

  • what do you prefer - x-factor, stock aitken and waterman?

    that would explain alot

  • @samsunghy You have no soul thats why

  • There's a striking likeness between Ian hislop with hair and the older Paul Mcartney, frightfull.

  • @remembertoflosj Totally!!

  • does anyone know the beatles song that was played when the pathe newsreel footage came up in this? :P

  • It's 'I Saw Her Standing There' - it's on the Please Please Me album I think! :)

  • Ian Hislop, if you lot are too stupid to realise, he is putting in all the things that Merton likes...judging by the unnecessary length of the comments on this page, you do not get it....it requires no analysis...it is a comedy show.

  • @ThreeWordsFirstWord OMG! I guess I missed all the hints, which were very subtle and not at all explicit!

  • @autofreak7 :o)))

  • @ThreeWordsFirstWord well paul doesn't like piers morgan, but i get what u mean

  • @ThreeWordsFirstWord is merton really that fond of piers morgan?

  • @EdJ343 Nah, but it's pretty funny to see Hislop make fun of him. Everything is totally picked for maximum comic effect.

  • @ThreeWordsFirstWord so paul merton likes piers morgan?

  • One criticism about the Beatles which I think holds up is that they were never original. They always adopted trends, rather than start new ones.

However, what guarantees their place in music history is that they PERFECTED these trends, and all in less than a decade at that.

  • nah they created a new genre of music post revolver

  • Ian in that wig.

    xD

    Brilliance.

  • These two are a great couple.

  • Ladies and gentlemen, or at least, those not in on the joke:

Ian chose his items simply because they are items Paul adores. The Beatles; Charlie Chaplin; and even Paul himself. He chose them because it was a funny and brilliant way to end an era, not to dismiss the greatness of The Beatles and what the meant to music.

For heaven's sake, this is a comedy show; let's not take things so seriously!

  • You're right, though I feel that Ian's dislike of these items is genuine all the same - and I'm pretty sure that Paul is not a fan of Piers 'Morgan' Moron.

He does admit his selection of the Beatles is really down to being too young to have experienced the 60s properly. (Plus he spent most of his early days outside of Britain.)

  • People take these things too seriously. This is a comedy show. There is no REAL room 101, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I think Hislop is funny!

  • *sighs* Why do cunts like you bother?

  • haha burn on you, jeffery archer

  • Hislop can't help his background. I'll probably remember him until the day my memory disappears. For me, one of the best political commentators of the last decade or so. Also, he obviously likes the essential part of the Beatles, which is why this is funny. And he obviously dislikes the crappy side of the Beatles (the hype). I think you missed a lot of what this show was about

  • if you dont like the beatles then you either havent bothered to give them a good listen out of shere stubbornness. or you have no soul.

  • they are massively over rated. simple as that

  • they influenced more musicians than any other that has gone before, since or ever will. they are so huge they are beyond anyone saying they are over rated. so it doesn't realy matter. the only other musicians comparable are what robert johnson did for the blues, and what led zeppelin did for rock.

  • oh hell i admit they wrote some shite. but when you are that prolific it is bound to happen. but john, paul, and george wrote some of the most perfect songs ever created. some people listen to songs like blackbird and take it as child-like song writing about a bird. when it is actually a brilliant metaphor for the terrible racism in the 60's. i find it hard to imagine (another genius song from john) that some one could listen to the whole repertoire and not fall in love with atleast 40 odd songs

  • what about the sons ringo star wrote

  • surely the first ever musician was the most influencial..? =P

  • haha yeah that remindes me of a family guy sketch. some cave men are sat around a fire grunting randomly, then all of a sudden they break out in to a song and sing in perfect harmony like a barbershop quartet. haha it is hilarious.

  • @KonVay1 Not necessarily. The second musician could have never heard the first musician before and may have been better.

  • Absolute bollocks, I love all of the artists you mention but seriously, what are you saying? More musicians than ANY that have gone before? THOUSANDS of years of tradition, eclipsed by pop songs? Get a grip, don't get carried away like music journalists do

  • If you can't deal with the idea that someone might have a different opinion to you, do you have a soul?

  • with the wig on ian looks like susan boyle

  • sad ppl on here...ragingrapist what a twat

  • you have no idea how important the beatles are to music.

  • hahahahaha!

  • They are several acts like this though. I they tragically died, you can't not like them. I got ridiculed for saying exactly the same thing about Jeff Buckley. Similarly, the first college rehearsal I had, we were assigned Smells Like Teen Spirit. Nirvana are great icons that everyone loves right? No one knew the words apart from 'Hello'. No one has ever had the nerve to turn around and say otherwise.

  • They're by no means bad, but he is right, you do hear far too much about them. I said at college as a music student that I didn't like them, meaning I'm not a fan and don't listen to them, and one of the lecturers turned around and had a good go at me! Another already! It bugs me that you're not allowed to dislike or bad mouth them. I passed that by someone and they said they were the musical equivalent of Hitler. If you want to put it that way...

  • i like the beatles although i never play them, but i detest paul macartney. the guy is a sanctimonious ego tripping pleb who hasn't written a decent song since the beatles.

  • Bob Dylan was amazing, allthough people covered his songs beter than him.

I like Ian Hislop, but the Beatles are a grea band, and undisputedly the most influential band ever.

  • you speak alot more sense than some people commenting on here

  • Ian Hislop and Paul Merton ... what a great team.

  • I'm SO glad the Beatles didn't get put in Room 101. How could you not like them? They are one of the best bands ever!

  • Sure it was. Then you realize what it is which constitutes a good song and it turns out you're opinion (important to remember that word, 'opinion') is wrong.

  • Everyone thinks that the Beatles are overrated. EVERYONE. That clapped out old point of view is just as played out as the old men and losers at Rolling Stone still trying to make out that they're still in any way relevant. They were good but they've probably had their time by now, just calm down!

  • See this is what I dislike I know the beatles did a lot for music but it annoys me when people just say they love something and say its great when they only liked some songs.

  • Sure a lot of their stuff was throwaway pop, but most of the greatest songs ever were really simplistic. Dylan and them completely changed music; just listen to any song from the 50s, they all sound similar, and are nothing special lyrically, but they're still great songs

  • Tbh I never liked Dylan, hes popular songs were shit in my opion. But to each hes own I hate everything popular really.

  • why do you hate everything popular? u shouldn't give a shit if other people like it or not, make your own mind up

  • I dont, but it seems everything I dislike is somehow good and amazing. I dont hate it cuz its popular i just hate them.

  • I love Paul's utter disbelief at Ian's knowledge of contemporary music

  • Jeffery Archer is a WANKER!

  • can i join ur club?!

  • I love The Beatles, but I get what he means about being told how great they are for your entire life

  • same!!

  • i love how mutch you get praise for saying you understand somthing lol

  • @lookatthemshine123

yeah, but they are great. no one better.

  • Shit, Ian Hislop is a ringer for Eddie Large in that wig.

  • I love the Beatles, but I really don't give a shit that people don't like them.

  • i love the beatles i listen to their songs all the time i hate it when everyone keeps on saying "When is there going to be another beatles" there is never going to be another just like Elvis.

  • the beatles great great great great great great great great oh guess what great

  • I also disagree on the beatles issue but if you watch the other parts Ian makes it clear that he only made these choices as they are some of Pauls Favourite things such as the beatles, Charlie Chaplin and even Paul himself. Lol

  • I also disagree on the beatles issue but if you watch the other parts Ian makes it clear that he only made these choices as they are some of Pauls Favourite things such as the beatles, Charlie Chaplin and even Paul himself. Lol

  • i never compared sum 41 to the beatles in terms fo greatness. i used them as a reference to another band who never matured. I would rather listen to sum 41 than the beatles though. (an dim not that big a fan of punk.) I take back the arrogance statement since you have clarified that, i apologise for that. I do however believe that the beatles never really did get more mature. By the way, Deep purple PAWNS the beatles with a gulf class the size of the pliocean era.

  • whilst the points you make are valid i will say one thing. Not all bands mature. A lot do but not everyone. The beatles changed their style yes but im not sure if they ever matured, just got even more bizarre. Another band who im not sure if they ever really matured as a band are sum 41.The presumption of me being arrogant if i were in john lennon's shoes however i do take personally. I have learnt never to be arrogant thanks to mistakes i made in my youth, so you can't get me on that one.

  • well the fact is the beatles did mature so lets stick to the premise. they were the one of the first british bands to start writing their own songs rather than having producers do it for them. so from the early 1906's when they wrote "love me do" to writing lets say, "come together", their music became a lot more sophisticated. i would hardly say sum 41 were ever a great band let alone compare them to the beatles...

  • ... i wasn't suggesting you yourself would be arrogant, that was a general claim that most people would be if they had achieved as much and were as revered as lennon. but thats my fault i should have been more clear on that point.

  • (first comment) *1960's not 1906!

  • This is on bbc 2 right now!!

  • hahaha! ian in that wig! priceless.

  • i really agree with ian when it comes to the beatles. i didn't get it when i first heard them (26 yrs ago)

  • I love the Beatles :) they're amazing n i say well done for how succsefull they are :)

  • thats just my argument on the beatles themselves musically. i also hate them personality wise. John lennon was a total cunt. He wrote imagine no posessions, yet you can bet he had a fucking good stereo to listen to it on. He also claimed he was more popular than jesus. A spainard in the works has NEVER outsold the bible. staying in bed for 3 days is called being lazy (or a student), not helping world peace. He had the pick of women both looks and personality, he chose yoko ono. NUFF SAID

  • personally speaking however i don't think the bigger than jesus quote should be taken so seriously. although im not gonna blow the horn for john lennon he was an arrogant guy although i guess you would be if you were in his shoes. with respect to ono she was he loved and you can't tell someone who they should and shouldn't love.

  • he never said he was bigger than jesus he said the beatles were bigger than jesus and by that he meant that the beatles were more popular than christianity at the time jesus man

  • I have to say i would offer MUCH more of a better argument than ian would. they were the first band to use an 8 track recording desk. (2x 4 tracks sync'd with bicycle chain). and they come up with love, love me do.

They are so over-rated compared to other bands of the time such as cream, the who and deep purple to name but 3 (deep purple started in 68 but are more associated with 70's admittedly.) cream started in 66 and ended in 68 but the beatles were commercial and insipid in my view.

  • ver true.

  • although you acknowledge love me do as a poor song fair enough if you don't like but the problem in your argument is you ignore everything subsequent to that, i.e. rubber soul, revolver and sgt peppers. great bands mature they don't start off immediately brilliant. thats musically speaking anyhow.

  • They feel the same way about you.

  • All music is subjective and whether somebody happens to like The Beatles is irrelevent really. The fact is that they are rightly so reveared because they completely revolutionised popular music and the entire music industry, as well as being a major part of entire cultural and social revolution which went way beyond mere pop music.

It's also fair to say that every single band and pop act which has come along after them owes them a huge and immeasurable debt.

  • since i was way too young to ever to have listened to the beatles, and heard countless things saying that the beatles were the best band ever. So i went to listen to them, and i couldnt have been more dissapointed. It was ok, but just not mind blowing. I guess I was a victim to hype, and that truely sucks XD

  • You're not a victim of hype, it is impossible to understand the Beatles' greatness unless you lived in the 60s. They broke new ground in music and played a large part in transforming the way people viewed the world.

Without listening them in the context of the music of that time the experience would indeed be quite different.

There's a lot of amazing music made by The Beatles, but especially now it might not be many people's cup of tea, that's what happens after so many years.

  • And you try to whine about Lennon on the Internet. How productive.

  • I'm 15, and some of The Beatles stuff is alright in my opinion..But I just love living in Liverpool like they did xD.

  • bastard the beatles are one of the best bands ever how could anyone hate the beatles ?

  • consider me to be the minority who has heard the beatles and cannot tolerate them.

  • good work hislop... the beatles are so dull

  • I love how his whole argument just collapsed

  • Screw you! It's not like I was even making that much of an argument. It was more of a throwaway comment. So neerr.

  • Lawlzerz

  • No I wasn't talking about you I was talking about Ian Hislop

  • Oh sorry. People been talkin' so much trash about me I got kinda paranoid there

  • the vast majority who hate the Beatles haven't actually heard much, and are just saying it to provoke a reaction/be a bit different. Of course people exist who genuinely don't like the Beatles, but not many.

  • i've nothing against the beatles (mainly cuz ringo did thomas the tank^^) but i agree with ian - i feel resistant to liking things a high population like

  • Everyone loves The Beatles. Did you hear the audience go "nnooo!" when he put the beatles picture on the desk? Biggest and best band ever. You just can't argue with that. No one will ever replicate the impact they had on music.

  • The Beatles are the Beatles, you don't have to like their music to understand how important they were to music in general, not just music even.

  • I was brought up on the beatles - parents being big fans and I've liked them since I was about 8 maybe. I don't always think that someone shouldn't like something just cus they are popular or overrated or anything. I made up my own mind and like their music.

  • Yea. I don't mind some of Paul McCartney's stuff, like Live and Let Die (better than the Guns N' Roses version, coming from a Guns N' Roses fan) but the Beatles annoy me. Partly because I don't like there style but also because they are over-rated in my opinion.

  • But you like guns 'n' roses. Enough said.

  • The Beatles were a revolutionary band, but they're the sort of band where lots like them and lots hate them. Personally I don't like them, but it's easy to see why people would do.

  • I'm 15 =P

  • SORRY! I meant OVER 21. Everyone under 21 hates the Beatles. Then they go to university.

  • 17 and love the beatles:P

  • im at university and i still dont like them. im also aware there are many bands alive now with more talent and charisma

  • I'm 16 and the Beatles are one of my favourite bands.

  • congratulations

  • That's right Mooseboy. Have I touched a nerve? heh heh.

  • Beatles over-rated? Oh dear. More idiots commenting, it seems.

  • Yes, all those people who have opinions are idiots, and all those ignorant wankers who believe their opinion is the only correct one aren't...

  • best band ever.

  • icuhhjc

  • if you take away all the money, all the chart success, and all the millions upon millions of vomit-inducing fans, what you are left with as the Beatles is a drug-induced mess of a scouse working man's pub band.

i'd feel like a failure if people like you agreed with me, so please give me a "thumbs down" for this comment.

  • For every good song they wrote, there are two shitty ones. 'Penny Lane' alone is worth 10 shit songs.

  • The Beatles were not terrible, just overrated. Most modern mUsic now is Terrible and Overated. I mean the sissor siters are just utter crap. think I embody Ian's spirit, which I suposse is sad as I am 19.

  • "He wrote a poem once that said 'Sadness isn't sadness. It's happiness in a black jacket.' And it isn't. It's sadness."

    Good ol' realistic Ian!

  • wow i totally agree with Ian saying how pissed he gets at people saying, 'ah the

60's was so good you missed it' blah blah blah. I can't stand it when people do that! grrr

  • my 101's are

    robbie williams

    awards

    itv

    tesco

    heat magazine

    oasis

  • say that again in human language??

  • lick what?

  • i so agree

  • tesco and oasis rule!!

  • i am with ian hislop on the beatles but for different reasons. the technology they had at the time was put to poor use buy them and better use by bands deemed inferior due to less publicity.

  • Merton's right - you can't just dislike something because everyone else likes it!

People love the Beatles for a reason, but if he doesn't - fair play to him I suppose.

  • I think what Ian really dislikes are people who praise stuff just because everyone else does.

  • Like Paul Merton said, it was insane to even suggest putting the Beatles in Room 101. It seems unfair that they only had celebrities on the show- they should have done a series for ordinary people as well. Can people tell me what THEY would put in Room 101? I would put in Room 101;

    1) Reality T.V. shows

    2) Coleslaw

    3) Orlando Bloom

    4) Lordi, who won the Eurovision in 2006

    5) Marija Serafovic, who won the Eurovision this year

  • I wouldn't say that it was insane to put the Beatles in. I reckon it's justified. For example, I could easily put someone like Lewis Hamilton in Room 101, because you can't escape him!

  • Lordi were great! At least they weren't spouting some annoyingly serious ballad calling for peace and harmony, like some Eurovision contestants do.

100% agree with you about coleslaw though.

  • Quite funny how every time an argument is put up, Ian can't do anything but agree.

It's the worst thing: disliking a band without really knowing why.

And then prefering the Kaiser Chiefs to the Beatles.. My god.

  • Oh phew, he didn't put them in. That's alright then.

  • I know this has had a lot of negative clicks, but it made me laugh out loud.

  • Ian hates all the things I like apart from Morgan of course.

  • it goes beatles-strawberries-chaplin-morgan-merton

  • Could you pretty please put the order in the titles?

  • i wish i lived in the 60s...

  • same here, the music was the best. Then the 70's were pretty good too.

  • yeah racism was awesome
