You know, for a learned gentleman of the 18th century whom I'd expect to be fairly sophisticated... he sure sucked at gun safety! Just as a note, in modern day guns, some primers are defective and have a delayed reaction. I can mention one case in RL in which a crook tried to murder his victim this way, but ended up killing himself through stupidity... in EXACTLY the same way this gentleman got it.
