  • wow asif they survived through that! legends...

  • when Britain used to be great...brilliant humor

  • True heroes unbelievable how they can condition out fear with training I couldn't imagine I could ever do what they did and I consider myself pretty tough

  • He didn't mention the diversionary force made up of most Canadians who also participated in this raid as well. This force was a used to help trick the Germans into thinking it was an allied invasion. The St. Nazaire raid was a great raid but not the greatest.

  • @xajactor oops my bad. I mix it up with the raid of dieppe.

  • what's "Handihoo" mean?

  • @IcyScythe hande hoch is german for hands up

  • @IcyScythe Hands up

  • real men

  • Quite the other side of german personel in the WW2 8.24

  • Did they make a game out of this. "Medal of Honor european assault"?

  • 5 people who disliked this are German

  • @borofalcon101 Silly statement.

  • Every Nato country needs to teach about this Raid to show the imposible can be done.

  • why have 5 who dislike this have no respect

  • @blakeydrb 6 angry germans?

  • love this type of history

  • the man climbed seven flights of stairs, in the dark, not really knowing how to get out of the building whilst wounded in the leg, arm and hands with only 90 seconds before being blown to pieces.

if we didnt know that that had actually happened, no one would have believed it was possible. utterly amazing

  • 5000 Germans Vs 150 Brits half of who are injured? Sounds like fair sides to me.

  • 0:50 "Johnny Procter lying there with his leg blown off, cheering us on," really shows the ethos the commandos live by. complete and utter respect for all the brave men who took part in this raid! Also thanks for uploading this :)

  • I love watching these old guys talk about this stuff. It's just amazing.

  • Great video. Thanks for posting so us poor folks overseas can see.

  • "he was a brave man" what an understatment

  • "I remember Johnny Proctor lying there with his leg blown off........cheering us on!" Brave men.

  • 1:40 Epic English humour win moment extravaganza!

  • Very,very brave men indeed//

  • Very,very brave men indeed//

  • Hande hoch to you ;)

  • I love the understated way these guys talk

'Dont hang about here its undecidedly unhealthy'

More like you're probably gonna die in a minute!

  • at 8:08 to 8:37 - the germans let them off?

  • yup, because even though it was a was still honor and respect amongst some soldiers

  • @azrock1984

the germans respected their courage for attempting the raid. at that time they had no idea about the bomb, they just thought it was a do-or-die raid and they respected that.

  • @azrock1984 They did nothing of the sort. All those captured were sent to POW camps.

The British were fighting in uniform, thus protected from summary execution by the Geneva Convention. Whilst not particularly observant on the Eastern Front, the German Army did tend to follow the convention on the western front.

  • spoil his prospects (kick him in the nuts) ha ha ha!

  • lol made me laugh too

  • i know theres a lot of americans that go on about how america is a super power with huge armed forces. but you cant beat a plucky marine

  • @Blink182DudeRanch Damn Straight

    Again

  • Sorry mate, but they weren't Marines, they were Army Commandos. The RM Commando units weren't formed until 1943...

  • cheers, i always thought they were formed in 1941 for some reason. thanks for the heads up

  • Comment removed

  • The British are insane. Damn good soldiers though.

  • @Melanth89 Damn Straight

  • @Melanth89 The British arent "insane", thats just what some foreign people think, because they dont get the British sense of humour.

  • @relarerfhjk come on we are a little bit insane ...oo:)

  • Whenever I think that Im not proud to be british all I have to do is watch this video and I always prove myself wrong.

  • why ante you proud fool? we live in a free country! and one of the best in the world :D

  • i bought that book and left it somewhere 1st day i had it. fucking 16 quid hardback too

  • @ lolwut237 Not true, either get a copy of Sniper 1 from your library or buy it, read all about Y Coy PWRR in Iraq, they lived for days under constant attack with an incoming mortar every 11 mins, and in same battle J Beharry won his V C

  • i have got and read sniper one, amazing book. Anyone who likes that kinda thing should get it

  • @keirfree that is a awesome book, shame about motor magnetic

  • "It was like a damn good november the fifth!" what a legend. You don't find men of that calibre nowadays.

  • "Formed themselfs into one big group and charged" The Germans must have been shitting themselfs, facing a group of men who were like mechines, nothing was going to stop them from following out their job.

Plus on a side note..160men killed, to me thats to much, i hope that today we never suffer that many in such a small space of time again, be it yank or brit.

  • Just to note this raid wasn't carried out by RM Commandos as noted in the description, the bulk of forces were from 2 Commando (Army Commandos) with demolition parties from several other Army Commando units.

  • Yup, good to see you know what your talking about :)

  • That guy who had to run out of the bunker while wounded was one tough son of a bitch.

  • hats off to you gents

  • It's so strange to hear such gentlemen speak of such atrocity. What an eloquent way to talk of war.

  • This is the best story of Commando i have ever seen... These guys are just AWESOME!!!!!!

  • Look at his eyes at 0:43 - imagine what he's seeing as he recounts the story...I'm glad I've never had to go to war.

  • Oy Idiots, stop arguing or I will disable comments!!! Enjoy the documentary please!

  • Amen!

At least acknowledge the monumental bravery of these old men who were once young.

  • @JohnSmithTheSecond Here here.

  • @JohnSmithTheSecond What was the date of this raid

  • @AribterRyan '42

  • god bless yr dad too ,mate

  • my dad was in No5 Commando hard core warriors bless them all. United We Conquer

  • Respect to your dad. mine was 45 RM Commando, 1944- (Day day) - 1948. Brave men.

    DP

  • Huge respect to both of your fathers .

  • What like walking 300 miles?

  • 6:10 lol! That has to be sods law in its purest form!

  • handy hoch to you... heheheh. Can anybody tell me if there is any documentary about the british or perhaps even dutch marines in the second world war?

  • Yeah it's the british, although men from the occupied countries did serve with the British special forces during the war.

  • "we went up to the deck of the ship where the 12 pounder had been hit and there were a lot of bodies lying about the place and a lot of blood all over the place and there was a whole in the deck and i remember johnny proctor lying there with his leg blown off cheering us on........" now that is what you call stiff upper lip to the extreme

  • like everything in war it is the people that fight, this was the greatest raid because of the courage of the men their integrity, will and spirit to complete their task outnumbered, wounded and near death...all people who served in war should be given respect for what they have done for our lives...

  • another armchair general..fuck off stupid twat

  • This mission was "so stupidly planned" that it led to the Tirpitz being stuck in a fjord in your country for the rest of the war- until the RAF dropped a "Grand Slam" bomb on it. I call that a success. Many commandos were killed-how many lives did they save ?

  • How many lives were saved? Well, in 1941, Tirpitz's sister ship, the Bismark, broke out into the Atlantic. It took at least 6 battleships, 2 aircraft carriers, and numerous other smaller vessels 3 days to hunt her down and sink her, and during that time she sank the hood, pride of the Royal Navy, with the loss of over 1400 men. Over 2000 young boys went down with the Bismark.

Had Tirpitz and Bismark lived up to their potential, we'd be ruled by Nazi's right now.

    Question answered?

  • I am sure that this shortened the war to some degree, but in the end Germany didnt really have a chance. Eventually Truman would have authorized dropping the Atom Bomb on Berlin and that would have been the end of that.

  • I think you're under the misapprehension that I think the raid was stupid. Check my phrase- "so stupidly planned" is in quotation marks, in response to some other message (now removed). Note I actually say "I call that a success." I am aware of the scale of lives saved by the raid-my question was aimed at a cowardly poster ,who has since deleted his remarks. No offence taken!

  • By the way,my father,my uncle,my great uncle were R.M Commandos. My Grandfather R.N (both World Wars). I am well aware of the importance, and heroism, associated with this action. I was brought up with tales of this and the Cockleshell Heroes!

  • oh, sorry.

I don't think this raid was too stupidly planned however.

  • Neither do I. Unfortunately ,some idiot commented that it was(hence my quotation marks)

  • 7:30 Commandos always have right of way

  • Thinking about it I reckon a mandatory military service for a couple of years would sort out the youth of today.

  • They tried that on tv... got a load of young men & put them through 50's style national service... seemed like it worked

  • The problem with our country at the moment is that the men growing up today have never been tested. They simply don't know what it is to fight for something, so they become bored and behave like animals.

  • i dont know how much good it would do the country, the armed forces effects people negativly aswell, but we certainly could do with something to make people see what we have

  • @BlueBlizz

it is in a video game...Medal of Honour: European Assault

  • LIVERPOOL SCOTTISH have an illustrious history, a detachment fought in the Boer War. In WW1, LS were the second TA battalion deployed to Belgium in 1914, just behind LONDON SCOTTISH. Noel Chavasse VC & Bar, MC was a Capt in LS in WW1. Actor Basil Rathbone, MC was a Capt in LS in WW1. Leigh Mallory of RAF fame was a Pte in LS in WW1. In WW2, most LS trained soldiers went into the Commandos, Para's, SAS & SBS. The cream always rises to the top....

  • Further comment re McCormack, the Germans, when they discovered he wore nothing under his kilt, delighted in taking lewd photographs of him as he sat with terrible facial injuries. One photo appeared in 'Signal' magazine with the derisory title on a whole page, 'Picture Of A British Commando.' Depravity & inhumanity in the name of propaganda. Mc, you'll never be forgotten by Liverpool Jocks!

  • The man at 8:59 is Pte Tom McCormack from Allerton, Liverpool. He was a member of LIVERPOOL SCOTTISH, hence the kilt-Forbes tartan. No 5 Troop 2 Commando consisted of LIVERPOOL SCOTTISH soldiers-all fought in kilts at St Naz. It was the last time British soldiers fought in the kilt, a little known fact. McC died as a result of head/facial wounds caused by a grenade.

  • Agreed! Those ol' boys were & are HARDCORE. They are so incredibly modest and masters of understatement. Quality blokes- 'IN EVENT OF WAR, BREAK GLASS AND LET EM LOOSE!' :)Fritz could NEVER have beaten that generation.

  • The music with violins makes me want to cry!

  • does anybody know what the song is that plays at 00:28 - 00:42

  • SA "Ruse":

Music @ 8:39 is from Batman Begins. James Newton Howard & Hans Zimmer. Track 2 - Eptesicus.

  • Correct GWills - I think RMC's came "on stream" in about 1943 (certainly since my dad was one in 44!) and then at some stage commando training was vested solely in the marines, on Mountbatten's recomendation, principally (I think) because of skills on boat handling and hence sea raiding. Anyway, brave men all.

    DP

  • it should be noted that these men were not in fact royal marines but army commandos

in WWII the commando infantry belonged in the army's order of battle

the responsibility was transferred to the royal marinse after the restructuring in 1945 after VE day

  • imagine having 5 north korean soldiers approach you and say pwut youw hands wups engwish pig

and a modern royal marine saying fuck you you put your hands up, what a reply, it will knock their fucking socks off, i would be impressed

  • "Dont stay here lad, it's decidely unhealthy"... talk about British understatement!

  • Suprahampton: It's a shame Clarkson has continued the tradition of modesty and understatement!

  • Correction: "has" should read "hasn't" obviously.

  • I guess British Irony has passed by aswell.

  • You're kidding right? Its still live and well by my account.

  • @Suprahampton

    You mean british humour.

  • @ApexAurajin LOL That too

  • Hande hoch to you... now that's a reply

  • I think it would be a great idea to make this into a Video Game

  • 3:17 scary

  • "for you Tommy, zee vaw is over"

  • 2:30, that is some insane shite...
