Amen, goinghomesomeday! And I agree with almost all of you. I hope I have the guts that Will Kane had if it every comes to that. JAG312 I admire you for putting up the good fight!
I've just watched the modern version of High Noon on TV for the first time - It was NOT a patch on the original. Why does Hollywood have this maniac urge to ""remake"" classic films!, all they do is to destroy the quality, acting etc. There IS only one High Noon (in my humble opinion) and that’s the original with Gary Cooper and Tex Ritter singing the ballad.
Hollywood & Co. Please spare us any further agony.
When I was in College and joined a Frat, one of the things the actives did was have a showing of High Noon. Then they asked all of the new guys what they would have done if they were in the town. The only answer was to get a gun and help the Coop. If you didn't get it right, they kicked you out. Who would trust a man lwho would cut and run on a brother,
I saw this movie as a small child, and it sort of stuck with me all through these years. This movie is my life. Well, cancer is my Frank Miller, and I am facing that deadly killer right now, and I am facing it as a brave man. So it will be either "Frank Miller" or me, and if "Miller" wins, at least I won't be lying in my grave as a coward.
What is the name of that weird instrument? I can only describe it as a "washing machine", but it works so beautifully in this great song! Excellent movie, BTW!
It may interest you to know that this month marks 50 years since Frank James Cooper (Gary Cooper to you) passed into eternity from the deadly killer known as cancer.
I saw this movie with my dad in the 1950's and admired Gary Cooper and all the World War II generation actors for the splendid role models and interest story lines that were portrayed. I have tried to live my life in accordance with the values they set forth even during the VietNam days, but I will never forget the saturday I sat down with my dad and watched this movie and learned that being a man you have to make choices and try and make the best choices you can. Love you Mom and Dad always.
Brilliant song. I like how that intstrument sounds like an erratic heartbeat in accompaniment with the singer's voice. Eerie and starkly beautiful at the same time.
This was not only a great movie, but a picture of disgraceful cowards. My favorite part was when Kane threw his badge down and left that spiritless town.
very noble, Cabellero 69! it is amazing how much courage the Will Kane character needed to summon up - and he did rise to the challenge! Once we are brave, it is easier to continue on that path...BTW, Cooper was suffering from a slight back injury, which added to the pathos of his characterization.
Tex Ritter' s voice was deep & perfect for this song. Although it was done by many, his version is by far the best.
I loved Tex Ritter in Deck of Cards, and many other songs. He had a deep gravelly voice, but could sing songs no other could. I liked his son, John Ritter in Three's company and a couple of his movies, but as a child Tex Ritter was a god.
The seminal Western Movie and the first time a singing score was added to a Movie... this movie sets the benchmark for every other Western to follow... only True Grit matched this film
@bjc19199 ......And to think that 25 years after Ritter pere's signature recording, Ritter fils made a significant impact and left a significant legacy, albeit far too soon.
the words really say a lot about what it means not just to be a man but to know and do the right thing. best part was at the end when he looked at the townsfolk and threw badge on the ground with that look of distain great movie
The singing is by Tex Ritter but the music is by Dmitri Tiomkin and is clearly much more harmonically rich than a typical country ballad of the time. Of of the best theme songs ever.
Will Kane in High Noon gave a fatherless young boy a model of what it means to be a man and not merely a male. Anything I have achieved as a man in the best sense of that term stems from Gary Coopers slendid portrayal of a person who knew what a man has to do and proceeded to do it. This year, I passed the movie and this message on to my twin sons. I owe the people who made this movie a debt I can only repay by remembering "I must be brave" regardless of the fate that awaits me.
cabellero, great post. I mentioned to someone just recently, growing up, boys were presented exposed to the world of men, it meant courage, intelligence and acting like a 'hero'! I also loved Paladin, of Have Gun Will Travel. Today, and it isn't the media's fault, it seems as the most unworthy people are now our role model. For adults, no problem, but children, begin to believe, that abnormal is "normal"! "Being brave" regardless of consequences,it sends chills down my back!
@Cabellero69 Honestly, I can relate to that sentiment, but on behalf of my brother instead of me. He was failing for a long time but he pulled himself up a while after watching that movie. I watched him fail and watched him pull himself out of the pit; and I at least can definitely attribute it to the portrayal of a real man that Kane represented.
@otrebor16 Thank you. This movie profoundly affected my life for the better. I hope it has the same affect on my sons and many others. Art is a powerful force for good and ill.
My boys seemed touched by the letter I wrote to accompany the DVD version of the movie. One of the great things about being a father is the chance to try an pass on something of enduring value.

It is a strange coincidence that a movie I watched and loved so long ago, became one of the most heartfelt gifts, I ever had the opportunity to share with my boys.
Thank you again for the kind and encouraging words.
@Cabellero69 I don't know if you're an American or not, nor does it matter, but I have to tell you how much I admire your outlook and values. In my hippie days, I used to snicker at such things, but the older I get and the more I see, the more I realize how much this country - and this world - needs to turn back and re-embrace the Will Kanes, who, I finally see were not rigid, goody-goody boy scouts, but all about decency and guts. And you've passed it on to your sons. It makes my day.
If not one of the best it certainly was the best. If you can find, "Ulzana's Raid", it is well worth the time spent watching it. Burt Lancaster portrays the World weary scout MacQuintosh who sets out to capture an Apache sub Chief Ulzana that has escaped form the Res. It doesn't conclude with a jackpot ending.
@BunchofMovieVideos If you mean Kane, it always seemed to me that he was a hero because he was afraid. He got beat up; he had doubts and he kept going. People he thought he could count on betrayed him and he kept going. Being a hero is not about having no fear, it is about going on in spite of fear.
Hi. It's so Hard. One minute I do, then I think of the Magnificent Seven, For A Few dollars more. We Americans use to make the most incredible Westerns. I can't really pick one. Glad you can not think of the "Man with no name" and just stick with Cooper, because Clint Eastwood was no slouch in his Westerns!
@clashwho It is more than a great movie, it is American Literature at its best. Greek drama in Stetsons. Shane is also epic in its theme and grandeur.

The slightly sore back Gary Cooper sustained helped give him that "pained" look, which allowed him to earn his 2nd well-deserved Oscar.

Indeed the movie version of the song is the better one!
And "High Noon" ist the Godfather of Western!
A genius small Budget B-Western turns into a succsesful Blockbuster.
With an "older "Gary Cooper who was not more on the Top ten actors at the time.
So it was also a late succsess for him!
For me this movie including all, what a good western movie makes!
