is it just me or has this sport really became just a jumping sport? you will never see spiral and spins like sasha does. her spins and spirals have so many varieties it looks amazing.
Despite this being a better performance technical-wise, I much prefer her Olympic performance of Romeo and Juliet. The artistry was more spectacular, despite the falls.
Comparing with Romeo and Juliet that Sasha performed in '07 Worlds, she performed this one so much better. Though she made me cry in both of them. Very artistic, very talented. I love to watch her.
I really think out of all of the skaters I've ever watched she has the best artistry, and that's including over Michelle Kwan. She's breathtaking and her biggest strength is definitely her spiral sequence and spins. However, she is not the greatest jumper. Out of all of the videos I've watched of her, I don't think I've ever seen her not fall. And if she doesn't fall you can tell she's struggling to keep the landing. She's really good but if she conquered those jumps she could be the best! :)
Uhhh...you obviously misread my comment. Let me reword this...I have seen her fall in every performance I've seen of her! She's great except for falling on all of her jumps!
but the frustrating thing is that she really IS a GREAT jumper....just inconsistant on landings :( but her back position when she does land is always perfect and her legs in the turn are always so tight and clean and her toes so perfectly pointed. just when she lands its sometimes a disaster :( but its always a beautiful disaster, cuz when shes in the air part of her jump its magnificent
Only one skater who can shine from what artistry she has here, and with Sasha... her facial expression is just not her signature projectile, it comes straight from the heart. The way she shows or even feels it is genuine and sometimes it pours right at you.
I LOVE Michelle Kwan - but I truly feel that Sasha Cohen can beat anyone when she's on her game. I believe next year it's Cohen vs. Ya-Nu Kim. Go USA!
Sasha got a bad rap for so long when she was competing, and it really was a shame. She is THE most beautiful skater I've ever seen, and certainly one of the most talented; because of that people put so much pressure on her. You didn't hear commentators talking so negatively about any other skater more so than Sasha. I really think she could have pulled it together eventually if people would have given her more room to grow.
You don't need talent to be flexible. You just need to stretch. Aside from her AWESOME extension and flexibility, there wasn't much that was outstanding about her skating.
Shallow edges, flutz, flip jump with 1000 edge changes (it maybe a flip, it may be a lip). Speed wasn't that great (not in the long, in her short she could pile it on, though).
What was amazing were the positions she hit in her spins (and the speed), her unbeatable spirals (albeit with shallow edges), and her looks...
I always thought they gushed about Sasha a lot. They really wanted Sasha to be the next big thing. Dick and Peggy could not shut up about how great Sasha was in 2000 - 2004. After 2004 they began giving up I'm afriad.
I thing she paid way too much attention to all her kudos. I question her work ethic. Her mistakes on the jumps always look like the result of not wanting to practice enough to get some consistency.
Well I agree with you. I have heard that Tatiana Tarasova and Robin Wagner both complained that she did not commit herself enough. I think she definatly needed to train harder, her mistakes were silly, it is as if she wanted to win without having to do all the hard work needed. Great spirals and extentions can only get you so far.
stunning. she really becomes the character. This music touches the heart and she skates so perfectly to it. Somehow, I felt that she skated with more passion and brilliance in Torino, despite the two falls.
Her facial expressions, I think, are the most captivating of any female skater I've ever seen. I LOVE watching her the most from this particular time in the sport, I don't care what anyone says about Kwan or Slutskaya or any of those.
I think it is a beautiful program. Saying that the torino program was better is absolute crap. Her extensions are incredible, and her grace across the ice is exquisite. In torino, she looked less graceful and it didn't flow as well as in this one.
I think what people are really loving about the Torino performance, and even her Coach said it there "you sure did'nt start it, but you sure finished it". That kick out at the end of her tripple sal was so impressive and so powerful. You could tell she meant business in Torino! Although I'd love to see her reach the level she wants to be at often, I feel happy to've watched her keep going the way that she does. This program Nationally and Internationally was the most special that year.
Are you kidding me? Mao beat her at the '05 Grand Prix of Paris, and Yu-Na holds the highest ever numbers for short program and long program. Considering Sasha tends to choke at almost every major opportunity, whereas Mao and Yu-na step up their games, I hardly see how she's "out of their league".
even with the "choking" she artistic skills, passion and experience is just way too much for Yu-na and no. i'm not kidding you. pfft.
please, if you have eyes and know skating, performance and art, then you will definately know. i'm not denying that she "choke"s i'm just stating my opinion. thus there is no need to get defensive and excited
Im sorry but her Torino program even with the falls deserved Gold to me. Her heart was in every second of that performance and it still to this day was the performance of her career to me even WITH the falls. I will never forget it
K - *falling* never deserves Gold at the Olympics. Sorry. Have some respect for the sport - its not all about how well she "acts" and raises her leg up.
Shows how much you know. Yamaguci fell in the LP in 92 and she won gold. Honestly its my personal opinion. So i dont really care what you think. Her spiral was better than Arakawas, her musicality was better, her form was better. To me Sashas rotuine even with falls was one of the most artistic, beautiful, graceful and wonderfully choreographed routines Ive ever seen. To me hers was number 1. And even though YOU dont think so, doesnt matter. In my heart Sasha was "THE" skater of that Olympics!

Well thats fine and you can think what you want of course, but your example isn't relevant to the situation. You can't say that someone who fell should get first place over someone who didn't fall even if the artistry is *slightly* better (and thats an arguable point) because GOING SPLAT ruins whatever artistry and flow was there in the first place.
You bring up Yamaguci, but Yamaguci didn't fall in the LP, she put her hand down - whereas her competitors all did way worse in the LP. Kerrigan popped two jumps and put her hand down on another, Ito went splat on her first triple axel attempt. So lets compare apples to apples here. Yamaguci deserved first because she was the LEAST flawed technically - Sasha Cohen certainly was not.
she is an amazing skater, with great quality elements, however she did not deserve gold nor at the olympics nor worlds... and about yamaguchi, she did do mistakes, however the others did too, and hers was the cleanest program, that's why she won, sasha may have the most gorgeous elements, however wasnt the cleanest at the olympics, and forgive me, but at the worlds her LP was a disaster...
yeah kristi fell in '92 but so did all the other skaters too lol krisit's just was the best program w/everone falling. if midori didn't fall on her axel she would have won gold cause she did her 2nd axel and her techinical points skyrocketed! arakawa has beautiful lines and her ina bauer is one of the best i've seen. sasha fell twice on her ass getting silver was a gift. even sasha admitted it. there is no way anyone should win gold w/2 falls while someone w/no falls places silver.

The performance in Torino was better. She skated with more intensity there and the program built to a stronger ending because she got the mistakes out of the way early and then also did that wonderful Triple Sal with the high leg kick . This program as a whole at Nationals is perhaps a little stronger because she did the 3Lutz/2Toe/2Loop and didn't fall.
wow...looks like she's flying on the ice...amazing

I totally agree. I think she has good height on her jumps and nice air positions. When she lands it, her positions are really pretty too!

however the definition of great jumper includes consistency of landings... anyone can gets up in the air and falls flat...

I honestly like the torino Romeo & Juliet better. Let me explain
1. The mistakes happen and end fast
2. Her amazing comeback to win the silver medal
3. Her extensions( with the injury)
