BF Goodrich All-Terrain for road and occasional off road use, excellent on mud, grass, snow and tarmac, if you want to do more off road rough stuff then BFG Mud Terrains...and the BFG's do last 30-40,000 should easily be achieved. I have even fitted BFg All-Terrains to the rear of my Ford Transit jumbo van lol, the best tyre in the world!!
Your vehicle came with LT235/70x15" if I remember, usually 1 or 2 sizes up is no problem, but do know bigger tires put more load on the drive train ESP.
Clutch, motor mounts, driveshaft center support & U-joints,
Some 88-91's had 31" tires but those had a rear axle ratio change from 4.55:1 to 4.77:1 plus the whole drive line is larger
THE LUGNUTS! if they're overtightened they crimp at the ends, Put a tap (12 x 1.5mm) in a vise and run the lugnuts over it,
if not they'll take out your wheel studs!
85-87' 2.3L(4ZD1) keep "free play" in the clutch pedal, adjust cable, clutch plate can push the crankshaft forword wearing out the end play shims (if the shims drop out) it can cause irrepairable engine damage. GOOD LUCK!
I had an 86 and an 88 trooper, both were great at trail riding in the nastiest mud Tennessee has. Next trooper i get, im going to replace the 2.3 or 2.6 gas engine with a diesel, i dont feel like spending 300 for another head.
Do you have gas engine trooper? some picture or vid of the engine? I would love to watch that, here the Trooper was ensambled by ColMotores in Colombia and ended production in 1996 (We owe one, is shorter, 2 side doors). All are gasoline carbureted 2.6 Liter engines.
I've got a 87 trooper with superswampers and superwinch lockers and it's pretty bad ass. I never get stuck. I don't care if it's a 2.3liter engine it's got the damn gear to turn the wheels. The 87 troopers come stock with 4:55 diferential which I think is perfect.
dude idk how ur trooper did that, i got an 88 2.3 liter with a factory 3 inch lift and goodyear wrangler tires and rebuilt the motor about 2k miles ago and it gets stuck in almost any damn thing and doesnt do anything but make me get mad, i been mudding/offraoding in it and got stuck all 3 times..lol,also i got a transmission leak after i just bought a new seal for it.... does anyone know how much it will cost to ge that fixed?
yeah found out 4x4 cv axles where wore out and i bought new ones and put them in and its still messed up, and idk i think the whole axle is shot i have tons of videos i want to put on utube of it but my camera puts in a different format and i don't have a converter
Thats one tough truck, i have had 3 old troopers, and now have a 02 Rodeo LS, the rodeo is nice, but the troopers are much better in the off road department...check out the last one i did, bought it for $200, great truck!!!look for (rebuilt Trooper before and after)
Why would you call this Trooper a p.o.s.? They know when you call them that you know... it's gonna remember at the worst possible time and leave you stranded somewhere BAAAD.
Well, my old trooper really isn't a p.o.s., but until recently the motor was lol. I paid $800 for it, and it had 300k miles on it. Currently doing a complete rebuild on the motor and adding a few much needed extras, new clutch, lockers, better carb, bigger cam, ect. But it really lives up to its name. It truly is a "Trooper". When put to the test it'll out perform other suv's, jeeps, ect. in its class.
I don't see the need to diss old iron, some might take note that these old troopers, the old monteros, and old land cruisers are the last of a breed. Today's "SUV" vehicles are comfort cruisers with very little of the Utility that caused their class moniker, left. Show me a 2007 vehicle with the no-nonsense work ethic of an 80's SUV.
I think I can only name The Land rover Defender, maybe the Mersedes G and of cours Russian UAZ(because the producton line wasn`t moderised seriously after 80s),that is all,but i agree with you about the suv.

Some Trooper TIPS
88-91' 2.6L(4ZE1) Adj. valves often
(they tighten & burn)+ Never overheat it!
GOOD LUCK!

Dude, your so-called P.O.S. Trooper took you up a hill in sloppy mud with street tires. Not what I would call a P.O.S.
