I think this was the best form Silivas was ever in. She was so well-conditioned, legs always straight, jammed together, toes pointed and the height of her tumbling. Fantastic!
WOW!!!!!!! i am impressed!!!!!!! i dont know all the elements and their difficulty BUT it is impressive!!!!!! and in between all the "jumps and twists in the air" great "dancy" movements. LOVE IT:)
@Shakeshack78 The beginning is similar to Nastia's floor music from 2008. "Dark Eyes" if I'm not mistaken. The second part is from Gina Gogean circa 1994.
I completly agree with the comment about onodi never comparing to daniela silivas!! She, in my opinion is the best gymnast of all time!! She is incredable!! I havent seen any gymnasts, even now, that can hold a candle to her!! I will tell you this, the gymnast of todays time, are very weak compared to these girls. These girls would wipe the floor with nastia as well as shannon miller!! opinoins are like assholes, everybody has one unfortunatly!
This is just an opinion but she to me doesnt move like a Romanian there are times I see a lil russin influence especially in her landings when she arches her back
Proud to be roumanian :)) Absolutly Beautiful. de s-ar mai naste odata fetite asa talentate si motivate sa mai ridice gimnastica la ceea ce a fost odata.....
The best floor routine EVER! I could watch it again and again (and I do). Artistry, difficulty, grace...and she does it with such ease. Dani never ceases to amaze me.
This was a time when artistic gymnastics was still exactly that, artistic. It is still an amazing sport but the artistry has had to give way for difficulty sadly. I love gymnastics between 1985-1989, in my opinion it was the greatest years for AG... I can watch Daniela's FX over and over as well. She had it all!
Aah, gymnastics at its perfected form! It always impresses me. Can't say the same for today's crap that fucking FIG spewed out after they ruined the sport.
it never ceases to amaze me how the gymnastics from 20 + years ago is so much more compelling and artistic than anything we see today . Bravo Silivas!
Back when artistic gymnastics still had the artistry...sighs
I don't mean the men and women nowadays are no less artists but it is all about the difficulty and they have to throw in so much difficulties and all these different elements there is no room for dancing anymore, makes me a bit sad. But I love watching it still!!!
Well considering that a full twisting double back is still so complex today that it probably wouldn't matter so much since there weren't really any start values, but they relied on execution mostly and form, but this was a perfect routine in 1987. It would probably score a 15.000 at the most today. Back to back tumbling.
Also, Daniela tumbled INTO the fulltwisting double back; she does roundoff whip flick into full-in which is MUCH harder. This is astonishing and incredible and truly one of the best pieces of athleticism and artistry ever combined, the likes of which we will, sadly, never see again:(
This routine definitely deserved its ten. The music, her artistry and expression, the difficulty....plus I've seen her perform this same routine at the same championships and stick that last pass exactly. And remember, the judges threw tens around like crazy back then and the previous 2 Romanian girls were also given tens so they kind of HAD to give Daniela one too.
i mean nadias hardest skill on floor was a double back.. so you cannot even compare silivas and nadia on floor. daniela was just miles ahead, also in her dance (nadia was never a good dancer, just watch her worlds 1978 floor and you will see what i mean)
Daniela Silivas was the face of 80s gymnastics! She looked so cute in this competition, I really didn't like her hairstyle in Seoul! The Romanian team this year was just splendid. It would be interesting to see this team compete against the 1989 Soviet team (which I think is the best team in the history of gymnastics)!
This floor routine was by far the best at these WC, but it wasn't perfect. She had form breaks on her tumbling passes, especially the cowboyed legs on her tucked punch fronts coming out of the double twist.
No-the option was there but few judges deducted for form breaks especially on tough moves like Siliva's gorgeous back-to-back tumbling pass. Shush, and Omelianchik had form breaks as well-but yet they scored tens-well deserved imo for the day.
You sound like the person to ask, then. Who was the world-famous russian/soviet female gymnast who became something of a legend for a particular floor routine that scored perfect? I've been trying to find her after a passing mention in conversation, but there are a lot of perfect scorers.
Sorry if this is a double post-I don't see my comment-do you mean Oksana Omelianchik the 1985 World Champion on FX? Her "Birdie" FX with it's innovative back-to-back tumbling pass (she's really the one that started the craze) is breathtaking. She's the daughter of a former ballerine so her incredible style, artistry, line and form are no surprize. Check Oksana's routines out if you haven't already on YouTube-especially her '85 and '87 FX!
For the standards of the day-it was perferct. Bogi, Shushu, Lashenova, etc. they all cowboyed their doubles and had slight form breaks on other passes. Gymnasts weren't rewarded for perfect form on those elements-except maybe Nelli Kim in 1976. To me she had the most gorgeous double back I've ever seen at least in film footage-knees locked together, toes pointed and I am now OT...
I love this routine to bits; one of my favourites EVER. That Romanian team in 1987 were just dynamite. Whenever I see Nastia doing her floor routine now, I always think of Dani, because of the music:)
Nastia's routine also reminds me of Daniela, but I think Dana's routine is waaay better. Her excersice had artistry which, let's be honest, Nastia doesn't have AND tumbling.
I think officially at the time she was listed as 17 (and 18 at the following year's Olympics). In reality she was two years younger-just 15 here and 16 at the Seoul Games in 1988. She was just 13 at her first Worlds in 1985 when she won Silver with the team and a Gold on Balance Beam-with a perfect ten at that tender age.
Yes-but don't you mean 1985 Worlds? She had retired before 1995-and would have been 23 by then which was considered well past one's prime in those days-but not anymore thank goodness! :)
23 is not a good age for gymnastics??? have you seen Oksana Chusovitina's performances lately?? she's got the power to keep going and going like the energizer batteries bunny...LOL
lol...well she san acception...she only does gymnastics for her luekemia son which i think is great...but a nytime a gymnast is older then 17 a commentators gonna say crap like "and shes actually 18, a little old for gymnastics but ok"
That's great but she is an exception, not a rule. Of course it can be done but to do gymnastics at that age at her level is also a lot of luck in terms of genetics.
HEY...this music is the SAME as Nastia's current floor music, at the beginning anyway (listen at :25)...the actual orchestra playing it is just different! COOL!
WEll, I t was a Great performance, a lot of energy in her. But I love and prefer the Dobre`s elegance and smoothness... Both are great. among of the top ten of all time.
hmm silivas had Two full ins in her routine (dobre only had one) and silivas had two double twist punch fronts and dobre just one. so I say she had more difficulty than dobre. and that was just in 87, in every other year silivas had far more difficulty than dobre
As you stated that worlds, and olympics make an athlete silivas and omelianchick both performed in the worlds and olympics so according to you that would make them an athlete so they are famous. And if dawes tells someone who knows absolutely nothing about the sport of gymnastics that she is known for inventing a skill yes that would mislead someone into thinking that she is the originator.
but if you go to her website in her Q&A forum when asked if she invented any skills during her career as a gymnast she stated that she was the gymnast known for the back to back tumbling pass routine. Well now that i know she is not the originator but the duplicator i think she should have clarified that an her answer, because that would seem pretty shallow for a well known and respected gymnast like dominique to take all the credit for something she did not invent.
Well if Dawes said she was 'known' for it, rather than the originator then I suppose she was not being misleading. Omelianchik, and Silivas are among the first I can remember doing back to back tumbling passes. There may have been earlier gymnasts but perhaps due to not being famous (as a Worlds, or Olympics may make an athlete) they are not remembered as well.
Silivas has her strong points but there is no argument regarding Dobre's superiority in 1987. Dobre was a better gymnast than Silivas, she had absolutely no weak event (Silivas had VT). Her knee injury got the best of her.
i disagree. silivas was FAR superior to Dobre on floor and UB, and they were equal on beam. in fact I prefered silivas on beam too, Dobre had just too many flexibility moves
Yeah when she showed up to Seoul with the Afro Puffs and past her peak, she made the Soviets dreams come true. Too bad she didn't hang in there for 92 like Bogi did. This routine is absolutely exquisite!
I dont think she was past her peak at Seoul: she was the first woman to ever do a fullinfullout and had it named after her. She did it in floor Event Finals but stumbled slightly on a deep landing. Showcasing an element never done before is hardly being "past her peak" is it?And her beam routine got a "10" as well, and her compulsory floor!!
The second tumble turned me off... Omelianchik owns that pass and in my opinion was a way better floor worker.

hmm silivas had Two full ins in her routine (dobre only had one) and silivas had two double twist punch fronts and dobre just one. so I say she had more difficulty than dobre. and that was just in 87, in every other year silivas had far more difficulty than dobre

thats false kristie phillips was the first american athlete to perform that back to back tumbling pass in 1988
largec 4 years ago
i think your right, she did that in the 88 olymic trials

Dominique Dawes was the 1st AMERICAN to perform the back to back pass.

As you stated that worlds, and olympics make an athlete silivas and omelianchick both performed in the worlds and olympics so according to you that would make them an athlete so they are famous. And if dawes tells someone who knows absolutely nothing about the sport of gymnastics that she is known for inventing a skill yes that would mislead someone into thinking that she is the originator.
largec 4 years ago
but if you go to her website in her Q&A forum when asked if she invented any skills during her career as a gymnast she stated that she was the gymnast known for the back to back tumbling pass routine.

There may have been earlier gymnasts but perhaps due to not being famous (as a Worlds, or Olympics may make an athlete) they are not remembered as well.

wait a minute she performed the back to back tumbling pass but i thought dominique dawes was the first gymnast to do it.
largec 4 years ago
No, Dawes was the LAST to do it, unfortunately.

Silivas has her strong points but there is no argument regarding Dobre's superiority in 1987. Dobre was a better gymnast than Silivas, she had absolutely no weak event (Silivas had VT). Her knee injury got the best of her.
GoSveta 4 years ago
i disagree. silivas was FAR superior to Dobre on floor and UB, and they were equal on beam. in fact I prefered silivas on beam too, Dobre had just too many flexibility moves
littlebreeze122 4 years ago
I don't think there was much in it between Dobre and Silivas on floor but Silivas definitely had more presence.

Yeah when she showed up to Seoul with the Afro Puffs and past her peak, she made the Soviets dreams come true. Too bad she didn't hang in there for 92 like Bogi did. This routine is absolutely exquisite!
braveheartlioncarebe 4 years ago
I dont think she was past her peak at Seoul: she was the first woman to ever do a fullinfullout and had it named after her. She did it in floor Event Finals but stumbled slightly on a deep landing. Showcasing an element never done before is hardly being "past her peak" is it?And her beam routine got a "10" as well, and her compulsory floor!!

The full-in full-out was done by Aleftina Priakhina in 1986 and so did Xvetlana Boginskaya but I don't remember when.
