  • The drumming on this by Mick. Just really important and good stuff.

  • I love the line "Everything in its place, authority must be maintained for then we know exactly where we are" and "If he dies we'll send a medal to his wife" This is WWI in a nutshell.

  • God Save The Kinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Every song on this album is perfect! Truly one of the greatest of all time. If you can't hear that, you don't deserve ears!

  • Heard this album only for the first time recently... I nearly fell off the tram seat in amazement at this stunning work. Discovering the Kinks, what a gift.

  • Did they really play this song in grown ups, ive seen it so many times, but then again i do fall asleep to it every time, ive seen it through only a few times, but im sure i'd have known if i heard it in the movie

  • am i gonna get booed if i dare say that "arthur" is way better than "abbey road" (both from '69) ???

  • @bluemeanie81 No. Arthur is definitely superior.

  • @bluemeanie81 Abby Road was a great album no doubt but in terms of influence the Beatles brought us pop and the Kinks punk. The Beatles defined their time, the Kinks were years ahead.

  • @bluemeanie81 No, you're going to get booed for trying to compare two awesome things and saying that one is better.

  • @bluemeanie81 you cant compare those they are totally different in to many ways to count.

  • @bluemeanie81. No I think you may be right, but they are very different albums. That said, Ray was better at social observation song writing than Lennon or Macca. The latter were probably better at escapist songs eg Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane. Then again, you can't really generalise, both bands took in many styles over many years. Both were brilliant and highly influential. Both were gods to me.

  • thumbs up if you heard this from grown ups xD

  • @femanodec Fuck off.

  • The middle 8 is killer; typical RDD genius.

  • To Jamaral81

    Perhaps his balls finally dropped!

  • billy mcfeely

  • yes sir NO sir fuck your blood for oil war sir!

  • yes sir yes sir+llike it......

  • I've noticed Rays Vocals are more baritone on the Arthur album only, why is that if any one knows

  • @jamaral81 Because he plays different characters so he uses different voices. His voice is higher on Shangri La and Some Mother's Son. When he is playing the narrator he uses his regular voice. When he is playing Arthur as in Victoria, Yes Sir No Sir and certain others his voice is deeper.

  • one of my (many!) fave K's songs...should be played outside all army recruitment centres at every opportunity..

  • Love from 1:46 onward. 'Give the scum a gun and make the bugger fight!'

  • the drumming is so tight and snappy ... AND then that change at 1;48 is spectacular !......'MAKE THE BUGGER FIGHT - send a medal to his wife !

  • So killer !!

  • This is the most ironical song of all I've known.

    and so lirycal,bautiful either.

  • Very, very, very, very, very, very, very UNDERRATED! At least we have love for it.

  • dave's guitar speaks to me......

  • do u like the kinks ??

    YESSS SiR

  • possibly the greatest album ever made

  • 'Three Bags Full Sir..'

  • Love this song, I heard this on Up The Academy, and I loved it!!! :D

  • This is where it's at right here.

  • Arthur is brilliant. Come to think of it, I never met an "Arthur" who was not brilliant.

Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empirem, now that's what I call a a rare gem of an album.

  • The Kinks, to those who know them, are geniuses.

  • awesome thanx for posting i always wondered what album this was from

  • I've always been infatuated with rock operas and this is definitely one of the best ever.

  • The zero people who disliked this must be idiots...wait...

  • @Dandyincursive Sorry to say but there's one dislike now..!!!!!

Thinking about Ray in December in London with the choir.. he should do a bit more off of Arthur in concert.

  • The bigwigs' laughing and drunken singalong at 2:50: priceless

  • Peace!

  • great album this, not one weak track on it!

  • @jonnybee64 Not as good as The Village Green Preservation Society or Face to Face

  • @kenfig wrong bitch

  • @psnapplebee Oooo yeah you're right ! ; now ram it down your Japseye Cocksucker

  • From a rabid Who freak: my favorite R&R album ever

  • When I hear this I wonder how madness is so contagious

  • I love Ray's different voices on this one, and his diction where he sings, "I think this life has affected my brain...." sounds more like F**d up my brain, LOL.

We should be singing this at all political rallies.

  • If it wasn't for the brave. There would be no freedom to mock.

  • @moonrooster77 If it wasn't for brave Germans and Japanese there wouldn't have been a second world war.

  • @moonrooster77 And if it weren't for the rigid authoritarianism of military life, there wouldn't be this song.

  • The Kinks is the best!

  • war plus im one 1970 on the way living is grand life so easy taken burden core more

  • This song is orgasmic.

  • seems like there were 2 or 3 different -but related - songs in every song on this album. the man was just exploding with ideas and mostly all were brilliant.

  • this was a concept album that was originally written to be a soundtrack for a play, but then the play was cancelled. But the Kinks went ahead with the album anyways.

  • Greatness.

  • Ray Davies U are amazing ...light years ahead of anyone....Ray b proud of ur welsh blood...luv ya

  • Incredible album, there just weren't many other bands with such socially conscience lyrics out there at the time, The Kinks are amazing.

  • Great Song about the hell of war and the great and brave British heroes who perservered through it, defeated an evil tyrant and preserved the Village Green for our generaton to enjoy. Viva Raymond Douglas Davies, and Dave ROCKS!.

  • I love this song. One of the best off Arthur.

  • very powerful anti-war song, anti-military....can't decide whether it's more potent than "Some Mother's Son" or not, but both are just outstanding.

This album is just criminally underrated.

  • Yes. These words are surely on a par with those created by WW1 poets like Wilfred Owen. Albeit not by a man who had been there, but who had a great imagination. Accompanied by a great 60's soundtrack, this is just great. 'Some Mothers son' is very poignant. Woudl love to have known what Harry Patch thought of these songs, or at least the lyrics.

  • @notaphaser

I totally agree. I discovered this album in the early 80's. Loved it from day one. This song is tremendous. Beyond its meaning listen to Dave's great lead running in the background the whole song. It counters Ray's great vocal. Its a great late sixties rock song in addition to its great meaning as a centerpiece of this great work of art.

  • I heard this song for the first time in an 80's movie i saw when i was a kid called "up the Academy".

  • great album. top 100 song of all time

  • Pure artistry

  • my favorite album.

  • I love The Kinks!

  • They are removing Baetles music from Youtube. I really the Kinks songs will be here to stay

  • this is the song that made me not want to join the military...

  • @VansFaith you're totally sorry-ful

  • @nyc63jc

  • vansfaith , erm .... a little piece of advice , if you are going to debate in the english language , could you go to the effort of trying to string a sentance together which makes some sense please ? No offence intended , peace out !

  • i don't understand your random jumble of words ?

  • panglish....

  • your just being a bellend now . Bye bye you childish scrote .

  • What ? I don't understand English , because i'm from England , QUIM WEDGE ! NO , i don't understand your pigeon attempt at the language , it's far better than my Chinese , but i do not try to slag the Chinese in there own language . What you are talking is closer to panglish than English , this is not an insult , it's an observation . Panglish is a high bred language , a little like patoir ...

  • " CAUSE " means a " motive or action " ....... you are making less and less sense ?

  • Yes ignorant and foolish , of course , silly me . And there i was, having a conversation with someone that made perfect sense ...... WTF "kiddumfoolish ignorant enough " ?????? ....... If you insist in trying to insult me in my mother tongue , at least have the common dignity to MAKE F@!KING SENSE!

  • even better " kiddumfoolish suck " ? YOUR BEING A BELLEND ! WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM ?

  • chinevil.

  • chinevil at the top of the execution charts once again , WELL DONE YOU ......

  • chinevil dictatorshipped massacre ? who's foolish now?

  • It was actually a statement based upon chinas execution death toll mr panglish , numbers estimated at 10,000 per year , you should be so proud of your country's disregard of basic human rights , and mass miscarraiges of justice ! 1nce again WELL DONE YOU !

  • Wtf? Are you mental ? Once again a mass jumble of words courtesy of the backwards child , yet another rant with no coherent content or valid argument ! But i must thank you for our conversation , speaking to a fungus mould spore like your twatish self has made me feel great about one's integrity and intelligence .

  • Mental bellend .

  • HA!

  • Yes it's great the mighty pollutant ,the pusher man of morbidly obese cuisine,an attitude of anti decorum and a real problem with personal volume levels (sound, not just sheer volume and mass (that's another story) ,bellowing in conversation is pointlessly excessive, and just plain rude ) .Yes sure-eeeeee it is the god damn best, and god bless all that sail up her crevice, and make sure you keep your head tightly up that crevice so that you can't hear what the rest of the world really thinks of you.

  • This is always my favourite song

It's the exactly reality of the world。
