I always found this episode surprisingly realistically sad. Gervais and Merchant are not only really funny men, but they also know when and how to truly find poignant pathos in life, and they do this just as expertly. Perhaps to be really funny, you need to know what's truly sad, as well.

You do know the british version is the original though right?? written by ricky gervais in 2001. The US Office started in 2005. It was made in to an american "not funny" version because you don't get our humour!

And i don't usually do this, but this difference in opinions is probably just because the versions are really well adapted. And that's as close to a compromise as you'll get from me.

It lacks the subtlety of the uk version, it hammers home the gags, the characters are cartoonish and the glances to the camera looked forced. all in all it is a much more low brow production by design so that it appeals to a mainstream american audience rather than a more sophisticated Uk and Irish audience. its worth mentioning that it is only the US that think they are better at everything. the rest of us don't share that opinion of you.

We've all known a Chris Finch at school or work.... utter cunt. I am not embarrassed to say that my eyes welled up when David told him to fuck off. Brent was a bit of a prat but he was never nasty or vindictive. Finch, however, is a bullying prick. Yes, I know it's only fictional but we can draw parallels with reality from this.

There's no need to get too deep about it. I was simply stating that chris finch treats David like crap and yet he still loves him. It's nothing to do with understanding the humour. I'm quite aware of how funny and humerouse it is otherwise i wouldn't watch it. Yes it's quite obviouse David isn't the full ticket and thats what makes the Office the best comedy ever . It also has a nice twist in the tail when Brent finally tells chris finch to Fuck off. Quality stuff.
