Our current state of ill preparedness and lack of prudence disturbs me. By the time we need the system, it will be too late to put it together. That's what the phalanx turrets do: spray a huge volume of bullets at an incoming target. Being computer controlled, they're very effective but they're a last resort, short-range defense in case the AEGIS missiles fail to destroy a missile, which probably won't happen unless all launchers run out of missiles.

If you are referring to a missile itself having a shotgun-type feature, the current proximity explosive is simpler and far more effective.

The 3M80 was not even around when AEGIS was designed, it initially aimed at rockets, which had the same speed, but the size of a Mig-21 fighter (3M45).

The later updates and the Rotating Airframe Missile are designed for countering the 3M80(E), but a today, the new Russian rockets have become faster and smaller again (3M54), so the next upgrade will be needed soon.
