The truth is, he was no kind of pilot. He was like a mouse riding inside a cannon ball. They just shot him up & he jumped out & parachuted to safety before his ball fell back to Earth & burned up. The truth is this was an immoral scientific experiment w/ a human test subject. No doubt he show tramendous guts to get into the thing. The gov't that chose to put him in such a position should be condemned as wreckless. It is really just dumb luck he didn't die. Probably many did die but covered up.
