The whole strike was ridiculous. It was about TA's wanting more power and higher wages. They already got free tuition, free res,, free parking, free food and on top of that 30$/hour wages. They had to halt the progress of tens of thousands of student because they're too greedy. They shouldn't be allowed to strike!
I am usually all for less government involvement, but when it comes to Universities the government needs to be more involved. The government funds the majority of the University, student tuition is small in comparison. The government should not just hand over money. Universities mismanage money and then set their own terms. If the university is funded largely by taxpayer money, how is it that its "private property"? The idea that a university in Ontario is private property is a joke.
Dear whoever said you can't touch him. You are wrong. The entire York University is a private property and as far as that goes, they have the right to do anything to you. If you enter the campus without permission, like if you don't study here or if you don't work here, they have to right to do with you as they wish. If we were in the United States, they could pull out a gun and shoot you, but thanks god we are not. But they can touch you, arrest you, and the list goes on.
I hate York Security. I soo hate York Security. They break the codes of conduct for security guards all the time, and put their dirty hands on people. Their all over campus too, just like the goose poop..... Just like the goose poop.
The charter rights chiefly appply to interactions with the government. York is partially subsidized by the governement but it is largely financed by student tuition fees. The charter only applies to law dealing with variours forms of government. Kicking out the reporters was morally wrong, but it's not constitutional.
just PO'ed b/c they can't find a job with their shitty poli-sci degree... so anti-establishment, but the only job most of these bums will ever get is with the gov't they claim to despise...pathetic
So god damn true my biggest regret in life so far was starting university in polisci. Jobless bastards plus the most vocal people for the union are ta's in the social sciences because they know they don't deserve to earn shit and anywhere else in the world they wouldn't be working!
The York Campus isn't like a normal meeting place. One can go there at any time of the night or day attend lectures to courses in which one is not enrolled and all sorts of other things. I don't know what the rules are but I know how the campus normally operates. Why would they kick out those media people but allow all that other stuff?
Yes there is the question of what's legal but there's also the question of what the ethical thing to do would be.
Labour laws in ontario, picketers cant trespass on private property, obstruct entry or intimidate. Shouldn't the security guard have the right to kick them out?
Too bad they didn't escort those incredibly misguided undergrads and union lackeys off campus as well.
Seriously, why start this week of action bullshit now? The labour dispute has been going on for 2 months. Why wait until the day the fall term was officially cancelled? What were you doing? Biding your time?
And face it, the university may put its own spin on information, but CUPE is just as guilty. It's been dressing up half truths and propaganda and parading them around as fact too!
All it really takes is a more covert attempt at filming inside, try hidden cameras or microphones. You cannot operate under the rules that support the censoring of public information and expect to get results. A more vigilant approach is necessary.
Yeah sure, then air it on the news, and have York frisk every attendee the next time (and probably get complaints from union members wanting to start shit). Assuming they don't sue the reporters for committing illegal acts.
Tell me that it's okay if someone sneaks hidden microphones and cameras into your house while you discuss private matters then spill it to the whole world...then I'll agree with you that reporters should sneak in cameras and mics to sit-ins.
I doubt that analogy is very sound in this situation. Cupe 3903 and York Board is blaming each other on who's fault it is that this strike has taken place, the students in the middle are caught. Now with our school year in jeopardy, I think we should know what's going on in this negotiations and make up our minds about the "bad guy" on our own, even if it means videoing it. Videoing it legally ofcourse.
The reason there was no comment on this in the news is because there's no story here at all. He left the media designated area and was in the offices so they asked him to leave. You cannot be a representative of the media filming on campus without permission. Just that simple.
Stuff like this happens all the time to reporters. Its not mentioned because its not part of the story. If he was attacked by security, that would be different. They asked him to leave, as escorted him out. That's it.
They are TV news. If they can't secure video footage of an event they are reporting, then it's not compelling tv news and their producers are less likely to run the story.
You can be sure York communications rep understood that even if you don't. Ever watched the news lately? Ever notice how they like to _film_ what they're reporting on?
clearly it was, if every time they try to interview members of the union they are told they have to leave. how can you cover an event adequately if you can't ask any questions?
The media is free to interview the union. Just not on private property. The union itself makes it difficult for the media to cover its cause by holding membership meetings that are closed to the public.
The media was not there to interview the Union. If they had come to York to interview the Union they would have come during the day and gone straight to the picket lines, or rather to the CUPE HQ at a pre-determined time.
The media was there to interview the participants of the sit-in, the purpose of whichs to bring all parties forth to a public forum in the interest of restarting talks and so that there can be accountability on part of both the union and administration. Bargain not holiday!
York thinks it can control what information can come out of this strike by restricting freedom of the press and forcibly evicting camera crews...this is ridiculous! I hope this video helps people realize that York is relying on coercion and misinformation to hold its side in the strike.
Asking someone to leave private property is in no way synonymous with restricting the freedom of the press. CityTv is free to report on the strike, but they're not free to film anywhere they'd like. Give your head a shake.
Yes, the privatization and corporatization of universities is a major issue. However it is distinct and separate from this one. Regardless of whether York had any moral justification in removing reporters from campus, it is clear that the charge that they were restricting the freedom of the press is unfounded. All this becomes clear if you take the time to distinguish between preventing an individual to witness an event and actually censoring an event's report to the public.

@kamranf Wrong. York University is a PUBLIC university. Not a private institution like Harvard.

@funnykidrian Ummm, lets read that again. "York University is a private property." Can you differentiate property and university?
kamranf 8 months ago
@funnykidrian Look up "Temporary Use of University Space" on York University's Secretariat website. And make sure to read numbers 2 and 3

I'm seeing young people eager to find their way in life. I'm seeing young reporters trying to find news, which is important.
Not in this video, but I'm seeing old people standing in the way of young people trying to make a life. Who's working for who here?

I feel incredibly sorry for all the students being held hostage by CUPE's malevolent tactics.

No, it's private property. York University is a non-profit organization; it gets funding from the government, but is not the government. Dipshit.

I will agree with the union about this, as soon as the union will allow the media (and the public) into General Members' Meetings.
Oh, you won't? Oh, certain spaces are private?
Gee whiz. Now I'm all conflicted and stuff.
