There are different types of them (healing, offensive, and manipulation) and the user wields them by channeling their emotions into energy; shaping their zaiphon into words that reflects their emotion (that's why there are different types of zaiphon). Anyways as you watch through the episodes it will make more sense. ;'-) Hope that helped!
