I see no reason not to keep the Bible or the Koran close to one's heart.
The problem is when another man forces his religious views on you, or tells you that your views are unacceptable.
By disestablishing Islam and discouraging headscarves, Ataturk did more for Islam than anyone since Mohammed. He gave his people the chance to rediscover Islam on their own accord.
BTW, until Ataturk came along, most Turks were illiterate and couldn't read the Koran anyway.

@MondoBeno Yep, you hit the nail on the head with that one. Ataturk certainly was a genious. Plus, after watching all this documentery about him, he makes other great leaders look average. This is probably why alot of the world hates Turkey, especially the Greeks. Its all bcoz they are a moderate islamic nation, plus they are a take no-nonsense (take no shit) kind of race, which is fair enough. If you see some of the hate comments about turks in the Greece vs turkey vids, it is just unbelievable

@MondoBeno Hello. Atatürk was not known as an authority in Islam. To claim that he knew better than all the knowledgable men before him who really studied their religion is actually a real insult to those people, to say the least.

I believe for us turks nationalism and religion should go hand in hand without interfering with each other so that we as a nation could progress throughout the generations to come with our history, morals ,religous values and cultural values past on. We must keep our unique identity as a sign of respect for our ancestors (i.e ataturk). Its like a gun and bullet, you cant pick one over the other, you need both BAYRAK INMEZ VE EZAN DINMEZ

Sana Ataturk'un kisisel notlarini okumani tavsiye ederim. Kendi el yazisiyla yazilmistir. Acikca dedigi sudur "Bazen butun dinlerin denizin dibini boylamasini istiyorum!" Ataturk hic bir zaman kisisel goruslerinde ve yasaminda dogmaya gecit vermemistir. Ayrica Ataturk ateist olsaydi bile bu onun onemini zerre kadar degistirmezdi! Hatta gercegi gormus biri olarak aydinligi bir kez daha kanitlanirdi.

He was truly a great man. If not for Ataturk, then Turkey would have been like its Arab neighbors who have dictators, frequent wars, Islamic laws etc. Thanks to Ataturk, he changed the face of turkey. There are people in Turkey now challenging the constitution itself. Like lifting the headscarf ban. Now these Islamists want an official holiday on Friday. These Islamists mistreat Ataturk's name. They are the enemies of secular Turkey. They must be kicked to Iran or Saudi Arabia.
