This is undoubtably a test for the car's traction control system which is the only way you can drive/win in F1 today. The old days of hanging the back end out in the corners, or spinning tires while accelerating are gone with the perfection of computer controlled chassis/drive systems. The goal of this design/thought is to NEVER spin the tires.
you dont really watch the formula one do you? remember that traction control was banned last year. The traction control would stop the car completely on ice so he can do donuts because he has no traction control. Traction control stops engine power by cutting the spark to one or more pistons so on ice it would have to stop all pistons but one causing the car to stall.

wot a waste of time, f1 cars need heat in the tyres, so who's idiot waste of time was this, utter crap, utter waste of wotever was trying to be done! F1 on on snow??? Fuck off! Am a huge F1 fan & this was totall bollox!!
dudde calm down! Im a extreme f1 fan too, i am actually racing cars. like they are trying to see how it is on snow and make something interesting, it is not a waste of the car, maybe of the fuel.
you need fraction between the tires and the asphalt to keep them warm, and you need to drive fast to get enough friction. So no, the tires wouldn't melt the ice. The reason there's no traction is because it's ice, even with special tires it's hard to get any grip.
yea, but they don't grip the best here, they have way to much power to drive on snow. An old 90hp Audi Quattro would probably have much better grip because of the 4WD. A F1 car only grips if you drive fast enough to keep the tires warm and create enough downforce. Have you seen how they spin if the driver turns the TC off? Even in fourth gear they spin because of the power.
Look what I spotted - with the Referral Code JUSTMORE you´ll get a 100% match up to 600 Dollars at Fulltiltpoker com! Couldn´t let that go und already found new friends there. It´s just great to play with free money! Americans welcome!!
I actually know a lot about motorsports :) More than you. And the infield in silverstone circuit was tiny and ofcourse someone with no racing experience isn't brave enough to drive the car fast enough to even warm the tires. But like i said already two times, for example Valentino Rossi drove very good times in a F1 when he tried it for the first time. Im not meaning that it's a car that anyone can drive in your hometown, but it is by far the most advanced and best handling racing car ever.
You idiot. You think the americans dont do well at F1 cause it is harder for them to drive F1 cars than it is for the european drivers? Car handling and speed is two totally different things. Valentino Rossi who had never sat in a f1 car took a lesson from the engineer and drove very fast times with it from the start. F1 is easy if you have any racing background. And anyways the Top Gear video doesnt make any sense, ofcourse it is hard to drive F1 in a damn parking lot xD
He drives family cars mostly. And you got me wrong, ofcourse F1 is not easy for a normal guy but for an open wheeler racer it's the ultimate and best handling machine they could hope for.
It's not as easy as it looks. F1 cars are tightly tuned machines designed to perform under a very tight set of perimeters.
1) The tires have absolutely no grip, especially when they're in the snow.
2) Much of the cars grip is generated by downforce that comes with speed.
3) Many catches within the car itself means that the driver has to know the car well to avoid stalling it, especially under such low speed conditions.
I'm sorry but you have totally wrong idea of Formula 1. Formula 1 is not like most of people think, it's not so that the cars are difficult to drive. They are the easiest cars to drive on the planet, it is just the huge amount of talent and guts that makes them get paid so much. It is easy to drive a formula 1 car just like in a game, but it's not easy to be fast against the best drivers in the world.
You must, as you know that they are the easiest cars on the planet to drive... All that downforce surely makes up for the 800+hp, motors revving at a million rpms, and lack of any driver aids (2008 on...)
Easiest cars to drive.
I have a feeling we've driven about the same amount of F1 cars in our life times...
No, but i have talked with people who have really driven F1 cars and are making driving simulators. and it's not only the downforce that creates grip, the F1 cars also generate HUGE amounts of mechanical grip, so you cant compare them with normal cars. And even if the cars have 800 hp the engines are still made driveable.
When you say that the motors are still made drivable, it is true. But its also relative. The motor turns 19000rpms, and has a certain rev range where it makes all its power. There is a certain rev range where the driver is going to know that he's about to get kicked in the back, but thats the same with any racing vehicle. Its a fundamental part of creating as much power as you can.
Most grip comes from aero, the mechanical grip is roughly the same that can be made with a lot of openwheelers
The mechanical grip is obviously dependant on tire compounds, tire size, and the suspensions ability to basically shove the tires into the ground without binding the vehicle up. Unlike aero grip, where you can constantly bend the flow of the air, mechanical grip has its limits.
Yep, but you maybe got me wrong. I propably put it wrong when i said the easiest cars in the world, what i meant was the easiest and the best racing cars to drive.
If you see comments from people that have tested the F1 for the first time, they say something like ''it was from a video game, you could do anything and brake as late as you wanted''
Clearly what you people don't realise is that it is purely for publicity. It wasn't done to say an F1 car is the quickest on snow because anyone with any knowledge could tell you it wont be. Hmm let me think, tones of HP, rear wheel drive, mm of the ground yeh exactly what you want for an ice going car. STOP COMPLAINING.
Actually, Formula 1 cars don't have a set HP since, all the teams are so secretive about it... But the supposed rating is around 800HP. Now just think. If only Formula 1 Cars had 4WD... Hmm... That'd be sweet.
