What I don't understand is how there can be a standalone magnetic monopole, wouldn't the magnetic field have to come from somewhere and go somewhere?

I guess I could imagine if there were a pair of particles where one was a monopole north and the other was a monopole south, and they were somehow linked like some kind of quantum entanglement.

And another thing they don't explain how that film knows the difference between a monopole and a dipole.

@TheQedqubit you are missing the "magnetic" in "magnetic monopole".  Protons and electrons are "electric" monopoles sure, they have an electric charge that is the same on both ends. But they spin. And the spin of a charge creates a magnetic field, and that magnetic field flows in one end of the particle and out the other. The place where the magnetic field flows out, is the North pole, the place where it flows in is the South pole, thus it has two magnetic poles.

if magnetism is created by the rate of change in an electron, then trying to find a monopole is the same as creating a wave tank which only produces a positive wave front (the negative giving rise to back emf), i think this is just wishful thinking, in so much as magnetism being some sort of particle that could be harvested for use.

Haven't you heard of redundancy? The Bible is crammed full of it. Being fruitful and multiplying are the same thing, said two different ways. That's a classic Hebrew writing convention. Have you read the Old Testament ever?

Colloquially, we may mean being fruitful to simply imply working hard and having success, but in the Old Testament it clearly meant to fuck. That's a main theme throughout the book, by the way.
