Things like fenders, hoods, tailgates and hatches should ALWAYS be painted in the position that they'll be installed in. He had your tailgate facing the sky and a few other parts in the wrong direction as well. It has to do with light reflection of said parts. Painting parts in a different manner than they'll be installed allows too much room for error. Hopefully you won't have too much lighter/darker but anyone who was having their car judged would never go for having it painted that way.

I don't care what the guys shop looks like, he's painting parts incorrectly and for that you stand the chance of getting second rate quality. If thas okay with you then fine. But I doubt it.
