Maybe the most pleasant bass tone i've heard from a guitar. It sounds a bit like an acoustic double bass. I think it's because the string and finger noises were recorded with the computer mic. I can imagine that if you added a tiny bit of piezo pickup (to get those high frequency noises) to your warm Precision pickup sound, you could emulate a contrabass. Relatively of course.
Hey there! I'm thinking about defretting my P-Bass (with a rosewood neck) in the next month or so. Thanks for uploading this, it's probably about how I'll sound afterward. Is there any kind of epoxy coating on your fretboard, or is it just the bare wood?
@BeedOfBass Thanks! I have checked out Warmoth and from what I understand they've got about the best quality and they're expensive enough, but they might be the best shot.
great sounding bass my friend, nice groove too!!! i used to play a '77 fender precision fretted bass and it was magical and the best sounding instrument i've played... groove on!
very nice groove and use of ghost notes, awesome tone. Yes, there's plenty of good basses out there, but P-Basses just have that thang that other basses don't have ;o)
Sounds great! Do you recall how you had the EQ set?

Classic fretless! Older than a lot of players who watch this. I like the tone! Cool.

I've played a '77 (i believe?) fretless p-bass at GC once and it sounded way better than that lol.

To be honest, I didn't like the riff you play on your fretless demonstrations. And then it got stuck in my head all day for some reason. all day.
I think I might buy a fretless one day.

@yourself2036 Unless you know how to fill in the lines left by the frets id suggest buying a pre done fretless neck.

precision fretless, lol isn't that an oxy-moron?

I can hear the rounding off of the high end on rosewood vs. ebony. The difference is clear, this helps so much.

I wonder why Fender doesn't produce a fretless 'blank plank' anymore? they're all lined.
Nice bass and tone!
51362879 1 year ago
@51362879 Go to warmoth.com if you want a fretless blank fender spec neck.

I think I prefer it with the rosewood board. It's only a slight difference, but it's sure there. Nice tone and bass.

Sounds like a big bassy whale, beautiful.
How much did the fretless set you back if you don't mind me asking?

Beautiful bass!

your tone has great attack, are you using any compression ?
200909will 1 year ago
@200909will - thanks for that! Nope.. no compression on this clip..

ok makes sense. funny how a tone preference solo'd can be so different from that in a group! take care
subschool5 1 year ago
i listened to this and then the ebony.. i prefer the warm and less articulate rosewood. what did you decide?
subschool5 1 year ago
@subschool5 i just noticed you used la bellas vs thomastik as well.. that's a world of difference too! entirely different gauges!
subschool5 1 year ago
@subschool5 - Solo'd, I prefer the rosewood but the ebony really helps it shine in the mix. In the end, I went for an ebony replacement neck.

how is the tension on the la bellas?

The tension is great on the La Bellas... not low like TIs, but not hard work either. Just,... 'right'. :-)

There's a very nice character about its honky sound, I really enjoy it. Just out of curiosity, what are your EQ settings for that bass?
Igastopheles 2 years ago
Hello! Thanks for that. The EQ is pretty much flat.. just a nudge of bass to fill it out at such a low volume.

love it

Great bass, lovely tone.

I prefer nylon tapewounds when going for an upright tone as they are warmer sounding.
greyhall1 2 years ago
You get an upright bass type of tone out of your bass with the flatwounds. Very good.
I have Thomastiks on my 1987 Fender Japan P Bass Special. I put flats on in inspiration of James Jameson.

Hey dude, this is cool, but you really should be slapping in the bridge...

I can only slap when I'm wearing white socks, flecked trousers and slip-on shoes.
