Solopsism is just a philosophical mind exercise. Its to make you think, not to be taken seriously, as that would cripple ones interaction with the real ( percieved) world.
Look at quantum mechanics and the measurement problem if you want know what the most experimentally accurate scientific theory says about whether or not objective reality exists...
..and equally senseless is the proposition that "something DOESN'T exist beyond my perception." Again, this presupposes an independent object to "exist" or "not exist". This is nonsense, but certainly not Solipsism.
Solipsism can be expressed much more clearly than this.
We can say, "Anything beyond my consciousness cannot be said to either exist or not exist. The assumption is irrelevant."
Why do you think an argument grounded in objectivism itself, is an argument against solipsism? The idea that these "people" are objectively existent to the subject's consciousness is to misunderstand what Solipsism actually IS. You're argument is meaningless because you've yet to actually reconcile the solipsist's language-game. There's no contradiction in saying you agree with someone else about solipsism. Only if you take solipsism Objectively!
Wow. I hope nobody takes this guy seriously. Would anyone like me to show why this entire argument against solipsism is itself a deeply misguided attemt of attacking solipsism. If you think this is a good argument against solipsism, i invite you to ask, "What epistemology is already resupposed in talking about solipsism?"
He wants to talk about solipsism in an objectivist's language game. This is mere confusion on his part..
What a shame that you think such things. I am a Solipsist, you can watch my video on it.
Do me a favor, when your consciousness is gone, come back to me and tell me what its like on the other side of being conscious. It might further my advances in Solipology.
If you're a real solopsist then we are under your control- as we are your creations, and as such any negative feelings you experience from the actions or opinions of anyone else can only be translated into solopsism as 'self harm'. Every argument with someone is really an argument with yourself.
Here's you telling yourself to Fuck Off, but in a polite way!
Using common sense how does one discount something that has been counted. The intellectual and knowledgable mind is the most enslaved. This is becos his knowledge comes from pre-written texts that are pre-programmed into the matrix. Everything is an idea, the machines pre-program our minds to figure shit out when in fact we desgined the shit in the first place.
I've suffered the same thing Ethan. Partially because of my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder lol. If you liked that answer, I'm fairly confident you'll like mine even better. PM me sometime if you're interested. I'm fairly certain I've found an answer. Anyway, hang in there man.
Sorry, but for all your analysis you have forgotten the Matrix in the movie is a computer generated world. It is created to give the impression of reality but in that world the spoon, like everything else is a sequence of computer code, nothing more. Therefore in the Matrix the spoon does not exist.
So true. Solopsism does not address or contribute to anything. It reminds me of the anthropic principle; it doesn't really help, it gets us no closer to deeper understanding of ourselves. So even if I am god in the solipsist sense; anything I do to gain a deeper understanding doesn't emanate from me but from my creation which then becomes objective. It's just, like the anthropic principle, stating the bloody obvious
I think you guys use words that you don't understand. God or Philosophy for example. I'm not saying that I do. I know I don't. And for this reason I belive we have to take an open minded aproach to everything. Be open minded. If you reject ideas that are different just becouse they're different, then who benefits? Just open mind for a different view, and nothing else matters. Meanwhile, read a lot of halexandria it will bombard you with different views.
God exists? Who knows? What is "God"? I must point out that the fact that you are discussing this right now constitutes a proof that you don't have a conscious mind becouse you wanted to, but becouse you have seen too much television (the majority of you) or have become smart reading philosophy stuff. So, it makes clear that God is whether a normal distribution over TV channels or a combinatorial algorithm bringing books to existence. Arrrg! C'mon, give God a chance to exist!
One of the most ironic things about solipsim is that the word itself does not appy to the speaker, but to another, i.e. sole=only ipso=himself. So the poor solipsist can only acknowledge solipsims in others, never himself. Perfect!!!
This video is not supposed to be a full refutation in itself - it merely points to the excerpt of David Deutsch's book which is a nice and (at least according to me) full refutation.

What does it even mean, or what possibly sense could it have to say that "Something exists even if i'm not conscious of it."?
How is it that one could possibly know this? Through your own consciousness? Another sense perception?
It's an irrelevant assumption to say something that you've never been conscious of exists independently of you're ability to consciously perceive it.

solipsism is a horrible state of mind.
reading up on it probably gave me the most lonley few months of my young life.
now im looking for proof of existence, the fact i found nothing credible is not nice...
but this looks promising:)
thanks!

Great reply. Well said and interesting. What is your background in philosophy?
nikitycent 3 years ago
Certain quantum physicists have said quantum physics now suggests that there is nothing "out there".
Maybe the solopsism collaspes on itself. Maybe it is supposed to do that.
