Quite frankly, the music was much better than the film himself. Even Benny wasn't that happy about it (he wanted to appear as himself in a brief "coda" to the film, but the studio refused). If you love fictional Hollywood "schmaltz" about a great jazz legend, by all means, enjoy it.
I have vague memories of seeing this on television and not being terribly impressed. Time has not changed this opinion.
