Problem with this puzzle is it does not take into account varied depths since it is forced to work on a 2d scale. The real world 3d solution is how it is really done in real life A water main and gas main buried in the ground on opposing sides of the houses. thus the water and gas never cross on the level they are at. Then you got the Electrical lines above ground going to a trunk line parallel to the water line but about 15 to 20 feet above it. The puzzle can be solved 3d but not 2d.

that is of course cheating since it is suppose to be done only in 2d, and the original puzzle did not have the door or the window. (the solution was the claim of the gas line being buried so it could cut the corner of the first house to get to the middle Thus using a 3d argument for the 2d puzzle..)

Well the houses are made up of lines are they not? You just busted a pipe through some poor dudes basement to connect gas for his neighbor. If you want your solution legit draw it without a basement at the doorway and without a "closed" window. But if you did that then everyone would of solved it that way right? ;)
