To be honest...when I was child I never even thought about how Barbie looked. I just knew that she was a toy and that I wanted to play with her and dress her up. I doubt many children compare them to real people...
I dont know anyone who took Barbies seriously when I was a kid. I used to collect them myself when I was a kid, to play with them. I never wanted to be one. Their body proportions is gross though.

They then realize that in order to be liked by people and to look "beautiful" they think looking skinny and wearing tons of makeup to cover their faces and lose who they truly are. @SammieTheSinger Where does a person learn what "beautiful" is? From a barbie? Oh no, the "standard" is placed by peer pressure and society. An inanimate object does not set a bad example its the people that set a bad example. Its like pushing the blame on something else, people are using barbie as a scapegoat. And lets say a child is not jealous but instead they have an admiration for the way barbie looks, this can lead to a sick obsession to become like the admired object.

Media has a great way of affecting children and teenagers view on how they should look. I was one of the girls who tried to be 'perfect' i wanted to be 'beautiful' and that's the image i received from barbies. i wanted to be skinny and wear heels and makeup and have big blue eyes and gorgeous long tan legs. For a long time i thought i was ugly because i wasn't picture perfect. Just because u weren't affected by it doesn't mean others werent. I do agree however that the creators of barbie DIDNT intend for that message to be perceived.
for all of those who didnt read her description it was for a project and NOT meant to be taken seriously. For those of u who did need to realize something. EVERYONE is different and handle things differently.
i think this was very well put together! When i was in KINDERGARTEN my arch nemesis (well what else would you call a kid who made your life a living hell most of your life cause you didn't know her name the first time you met her) wore TONS of make up. It was like going to school with a very mean and bitchy barbie. It didn't win her friends, she had none. Just other girls who didn't want to be picked on. And now they all hate her. She didn't get anything from looking like that and never will.

i agree. alot of people see some imperfection in their bodies and this is normal in all people. i have that too, i hate my body size and my nose. but if people began to compare themselves with Barbie's physical features and they know that Barbie is a toy that will stay young forever and doesn't age, then this becomes a brain malfunction issue.

I am tall (1.76m), long and thin legs, big breast and very long and shine hair. I am black+japonese+french and I got eyes in oriental shape, but blue, and light brown skin. And I exist!!! First of all, girls (normally) stop playing with dolls before middle school, so there aren't any connections between Barbie and whatever pressure they may be feeling, as the two are rarely in contact. Secondly, my sister has an eating disorder and through that I have come to know quite a few people in her situation. Not a single one of them has ever wished to look like Barbie, it's mostly just someone they know personally who they feel is "better" than them or a girl in a magazine.

This is about society's take on what girls need to look like. I played with Rainbow Bright as a kid, now that's a toy/doll. Barbie was made by Mattel so girls would have something to fashion themselves after. Barbie=unrealistic body image. Idc, what anyone else says....my 6 year old has never and will never have a Barbie. She's too young to realize it's "just a doll".
@tesszpt actually if your daughter is that young she probably DOES realise that it's "just a doll". It would be worrying if your daughter had your same views about Barbie being an unrealistic model of women and a factor of society's perpetual idea that somewhere out there, someone looks better than they do. To a child, Barbie IS just a doll because they aren't as aware of their self-esteem as older girls. If she first sees a Barbie when she's 16 rather than 6, that's probably much more damaging.
@temikalols Unfortunately in this day in age, her being 6 doesn't matter. There are 8 year old anorexic/bulemic girls out there. Children her age are aware of their bodies just as much as a teenager. I choose to let my child be a child and learn self esteem from her mother, who is curvy and secure in her "image".

Why are you showing old barbies? The newer generation of Barbies aren't as skinny with a 1/2 inch waist. Either way, no girl literally wants to look like Barbie, maybe aside from the blonde hair and blue eyes. However, nowhere in my comment did I ever promote barbie dolls as a good or even a bad toy for a child. I am by no means gorgeous but I always understood that "barbies" were toys and I loved playing with them when I was a child. I was usually more jealous at a classmate who made so many friends easily. Although when they created the pregnant barbie I thought that was the most ridiculous thing ever lol

They then realize that in order to be liked by people and to look "beautiful" they think looking skinny and wearing tons of makeup to cover their faces and lose who they truly are. An inanimate object does not set a bad example its the people that set a bad example. Its like pushing the blame on something else, people are using barbie as a scapegoat. And lets say a child is not jealous but instead they have an admiration for the way barbie looks, this can lead to a sick obsession to become like the admired object.

I was one of the girls who tried to be 'perfect' i wanted to be 'beautiful' and that's the image i received from barbies. i wanted to be skinny and wear heels and makeup and have big blue eyes and gorgeous long tan legs. For a long time i thought i was ugly because i wasn't picture perfect. Just because u weren't affected by it doesn't mean others werent. I do agree however that the creators of barbie DIDNT intend for that message to be perceived.

i think this was very well put together! When i was in KINDERGARTEN my arch nemesis (well what else would you call a kid who made your life a living hell most of your life cause you didn't know her name the first time you met her) wore TONS of make up. It was like going to school with a very mean and bitchy barbie. It didn't win her friends, she had none. Just other girls who didn't want to be picked on. And now they all hate her. First of all, girls (normally) stop playing with dolls before middle school, so there aren't any connections between Barbie and whatever pressure they may be feeling, as the two are rarely in contact. Secondly, my sister has an eating disorder and through that I have come to know quite a few people in her situation. Not a single one of them has ever wished to look like Barbie, it's mostly just someone they know personally who they feel is "better" than them or a girl in a magazine.

This is about society's take on what girls need to look like. I played with Rainbow Bright as a kid, now that's a toy/doll. Barbie was made by Mattel so girls would have something to fashion themselves after. Barbie=unrealistic body image. Idc, what anyone else says....my 6 year old has never and will never have a Barbie. She's too young to realize it's "just a doll".

@tesszpt actually if your daughter is that young she probably DOES realise that it's "just a doll". It would be worrying if your daughter had your same views about Barbie being an unrealistic model of women and a factor of society's perpetual idea that somewhere out there, someone looks better than they do. To a child, Barbie IS just a doll because they aren't as aware of their self-esteem as older girls. If she first sees a Barbie when she's 16 rather than 6, that's probably much more damaging.

@temikalols Unfortunately in this day in age, her being 6 doesn't matter. There are 8 year old anorexic/bulemic girls out there. Children her age are aware of their bodies just as much as a teenager. I choose to let my child be a child and learn self esteem from her mother, who is curvy and secure in her "image".

Why are you showing old barbies? The newer generation of Barbies aren't as skinny with a 1/2 inch waist. Either way, no girl literally wants to look like Barbie, maybe aside from the blonde hair and blue eyes. I played this Barbies when I was younger and I'll admit that I used to want blonde hair and grey-blue eyes, but I got over it; celebrities have more of an influence than dolls imo.
