  • i thought films were silent in 1933?

  • Great cartoon with and interesting plot.

  • Cute little cartooon!

  • music pliss?

  • the cats look like Felix!

  • @specialforces69 Well... It depends on how the word is used. The thing is that the word "anime" is often used to refer to cartoons from Japan. Even today, the word is very common.

  • My Grandma was Born that year

  • CLASSIC!!!

  • Wow. So this is one of the earliest Japanese anime cartoons in existence? Looks a lot like an old-school Disney cartoon. Still though, this is interesting. Even for a cartoon that came out in 1933.

  • @MDthornton83

the earliest anime in existence is Namakura Gatana (1917).

  • i love the opening soundtrack to this cartoon.

  • yokoso1014 has is right. This movie was made by Toho. Sorry, I had mistake. Still though, this is very inretesting movie.

  • Interesting! Some characters are a copy of Disney animation; a father and boy are Mickey Mouse without ears. However, samurai remind me of Kabuki actors: the way he speaks and his motions. Music is a traditional Japanese one, so it is natural that it sounds like noise to foreign people.

  • The first anime porn?

  • Every country (including America) should be like Japan.

  • My granpa was 7 yaers old in 1933. Amazing!

  • As Classic as classical animation gets.. cool soundtrack, cool animation(even for todays lazy, computer reliant animators),,, too bad it takes so long to download and stream

  • I never know such as old Japanese animation. This animation impressed by Disney animation. However, This Animation still live Japanese old child story. So, I am very impressed by this animation. By the way, this animation was made by Toei, witch is "ONE PIECE" or "Dragon ball" maker. historically, this animation is very important, I think.

  • The music is dope! The cartoon is great, too! Japs are cool!

  • This cartoon actually has better animation than astro boy even though astro boy was made in the 60's and this one in the 30's.Astro boy had some pretty crappy animation.

  • A Japanese Felix the cat huh? This is very entertaining under the influence of THC

  • To all of you people fighting about how Japan or America's style is better....fuck off please. No one wants to see such a discussion here. Either you say something nice or bad about the VIDEO or you leave. Or whatever, i'm not a cop.

  • oh wow, a japanese cartoon that was ACTUALLY ANIMATED.

not choppy or cheap at all.

oh wait, I am mistaken. this is most definitely NOT anime

  • @cumulo25

    Anime = Japanese animation.

This can be classified as anime, despite the style.

  • @sega31098 anime is a style. It originated in japan, but this does not look or move like anime, it's much to smooth and was probably made at a higher production value than a typical anime cartoon.

  • @cumulo25

    what do u mean??

  • @JPVeigaaaa Anime sucks, anime is cheaply done, this cartoon probably took months to make

  • @cumulo25

In a way, it's just still pictures with lots of noise in the background! I see what you mean by NO ANIMATION.

But it seems a recent phenomena, I remember Anime from the early 90's where the characters had real human expressions and there was in fact MOTION in them. Manga stuff, mainly. Maybe it's two different things? I don't know...

Naruto, for instance, not a fan myself. But I understand why someone would like it. It's fun and crazy. Just not my cup of tea.

  • @JPVeigaaaa the 90s was an animation renaissance, which tried to bring back the styles of the 30s 40s and early 50s before animation took a dive.

I'm a Looney Tunes and Ub Iwerks fan myself

  • @cumulo25

My thing is more South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, etc... but mainly those three. I love the witty comedy on those shows, although the lack of animation is really annoying at times. Sometimes the only movement characters have is their eyes blinking.

I loves Looney Toons when I was younger. The sheer craziness of it all. Daffy Duck was my fav.

One question: did Ub Iwerks invent Mickey Mouse and sold it to W. Disney or was it an equal creation by both? I never understood that...

  • @JPVeigaaaa I was my question would be: who REALLY invented mickey mouse?

  • @JPVeigaaaa Ub Iwerks is considered the co-creator of mickey mouse, after around 1929 Iwerks split from disney to work on his own cartoons.

  • Ko means fox(whitie) and RI means Asian racoon-dog(Blackie) and both of them were so believed that they could easily hallicinate people(or oppornents) unreal with a sort of natural magical power(not so too malicious) in Japan ancient. Ugoki-E means animation and Tate-Hiki means mutually be witched.

  • Thanks for posting this very nice early animation from Japan. I liked the music and was amazed by several of the camera shots, especially the birds-eye-view during the fight scene.

It his really interesting to see these very old roots of modern anime from an era when the animation industry was only a small cottage industry in Japan.

  • animation called "anime" only was created after of the second world war, on 60 years

  • The oldest is this of 1917.

    Japanese Old Animation (1917)

  • The oldest is this of 1917.

    Japanese Old Animation (1917)

  • The animation here looks about the same as American animation from that era. I wonder when Japan began developing the current anime technique they have now...the 40's? 50's?

  • @kc86er It really started with Osamu Tezuka, and even then it was due in part to limited TV budgets in the 1960's that necessitated the way animation in Japan would be handled on TV and movies from then on.

  • the japanese even borrowed disney from this era.

  • even back THEN they drew themselves with large eyes!

  • @kimmokimmu yo asscrack must be dirty cuz you shootin a whole bunch of shit right now muff.not all new cartoons are bad fool. and mickey and bugs' films in the past were okay back then so deal with it they were still great. greatness comes in all shapes sizes and colors fool. and snow white is just bull shit you like i bet. and anime is unoriginal nigga you probably seen 15 and i assume more and yet you still haven't grasped it's the same shit. well shit likes shit i guess

  • @pauletteking I agree that american cartoons are good, but they are mostly all old cartoons like looney tunes, disney cartoons, and all the other 30's,40's,50's,60's,80's,and 90's cartoons(I skipped the 70's because those was the worst times for cartoons.).American cartoons today suck, but you at least gotta give credit to anime,it started a revolution and has many memorable characters like in warner bros and disney. The only thing that sucks though is that anime is to perverted sometimes.

  • @kimmokimmu anime is so unoriginal it there's a book about it. if you see 1 anime you seen 99.9 percent of the rest. oh wait i mean 100 percent. and disney and warner brothers make the best things in the world do you see anime more in the world than mickey mouse or bugs bunny no you don't anime dick rider. cuz um they've been around way longer than most shitty anime and hm they're still going. and anime i doubt it'll last longer than 10-20 maybe 30 yrs. yawn i'm right you're wrong cartoons win

  • @kimmokimmu most disney and warner brothers stuff meaning 90 percent is better than any fag ass anime could ever be. and that fag justin beiber is gay and whack muff. and story line isn't what makes a show good char. depth man go swimming if you want depth nigga. and horrible taste is a retarded retard who dick rides anime to the point he or she or it acts like they know everything about japan. you got like a million anime dvds i bet my bottom dollar. and dude it's clear as tape you do

  • @kimmokimmu no it doesn't and van gough can go to hell for all i care i don't even know the muff. and story doesn't make a show great just look at warner brothers asshole. and anime is whack and for as anime fans call it "emoes" talkin bout death and sex and domination 24/7. man i bet you go to those convetion things to don't. american cartoons are amazing and cartoons aren't entirely made for kids anyway the censors ride your case if you go over the top. look at past and present ones you'll see

  • @kimmokimmu american stuff is better no matter what. anime uses the excuse of battle or "better" (in anime geek language) animation or drawing style to suck you in when anime has the same fucking faces and same voices. only a retard like you wouldn't notice this shit on the first shot

  • God, I Love Japan!

  • damn wanna play rough!!??

  • Hmm... A contest of magical skill between a tricky Tanuki and and a magic fox who materializes guns out of thin air? Someone wanna tell me WHY this isn't a series yet?!

The only way I can think of to make that more awesome is to have them team up to fight the Yakuza... in a film noir style... also the Yakuza is being run by demons.

  • @GrandChiefSmackaho Or better yet, have the Yakuza be depicted by demons, since the Fox and Tanuki are both of the spiritual/demonic world.

  • Two things:

    1. What is the title of this cartoon in English?

    2. I'm thinking this is based on some Japanese folklore or legend, but I don't recognize it.

  • Did some research last night, and it's based on the folk tale of The Fox and the Tanuki. The Tanuki is sort of a raccoon-dog creature native to Japan.

  • this proves to those anime fans that say anime is not a cartoon that it is in fact a cartoon. anime means cartoon in japanese language. and don't say "i mean the modern anime not this old stuff" bull shit you know anime is just cartoons. and stop saying anime is better than american cartoons cuz not all american toons are bad. watch warner brothers, disney, van buren, fleischer, sorry if i'm forgetting any

  • @pauletteking i've never heard anyone say anime is not a cartoon. It should be pretty obvious that anime is short for animation, which is what all of these shows are.

  • @pauletteking i've never heard anyone say anime is not a cartoon. It should be pretty obvious that anime is short for animation, which is what all of these shows are. Whats wrong with liking anime more? I definitely think that japanese anime is better than american cartoon. Anime has a wider audience, and appeals in ways that american cartoons can't. Of course there are still great american cartoons still being made (The Boondocks! and who doesn't love Family Guy?) but there's more anime.

  • @treez878 dude a hate adult cartoons cuz they suck. family guy is so over rated and played out it needs to die. the boondocks is cool though. it can live as long as it wants. and anime is not so memorable that you can remember it five years late without seeing during such. anime is shit that you have to buy the merchandise for in order to remember. and anime is like a goth kids paridise. and i've heard people say anime is not a cartoon. just look on youtube. american stuff is better than anime

  • @pauletteking What you wrote is one of the stupidest thing I've ever read on Youtube. Why the hell are you generalizing and insulting an entire nation's worth of animation? Because that's all anime is, Japanese animation. Are you seriously insulting Miyazaki's work, Tezuka's work, shows like Planetes, Denno Coil, Noein, Baccano, and Lain just because the only anime you saw was Naruto. Also, the people who say anime is not cartoon are moron, this is youtube after all, that should be obvious.

  • @janesaysso naruto is awesome and dbz yugioh and beyblade. but anime sucks in general. cuz it talks about death and you know it. it talks about death at every turn or whatever. and i bet you have a hell hole of dvd boc sets don't you? and those studios yu named i have no idea what you talkin about cuz i ain't a anime fucker like you. and i know that if people who say anime isn't a cartoon are dumb and i'm glad you're not a fan that says otherwise.

  • Why do these VERY old animes not even look like they were drawn in the anime style? They look more like American cartoons. What gives?

  • @BankaiIchigo12345 "Anime style" hadn't been invented yet. In 1933, Japanese people were watching American cartoons like Mickey Mouse, Silly Symphonies, Felix the Cat and Betty Boop, and their animation style reflects that. In fact, "anime style" is, in many ways, an imitation of it. The big eyes in anime come from American cartoon characters.

  • @CoryTheRaven

However anime/manga style has a unique and unmistakable appearance that is different from western styles.

  • @BankaiIchigo12345 It does. Modern anime developed in the 1960's thanks to Osamu Tezuka, creator of Astro Boy. The "big eye" look is actually something that he adopted from the cartoons I mentioned before.

  • gaijins comments are so scary

  • @sijotakane

lol says the person writing in English

  • 父狸の変身は鍵の穴や精子や吃驚箱だった。

    子狸の変身は鍵や侍の影だった。

  • I surely would not show this to a child unless I was planning to stay up with him/her all night because this thing scared the hell out of him/her. I would not watch this at night by myself. Man, this is creepy.

  • am i on drugs? what was i watching?

  • I don't like anime, but this one is very good!

  • @RTZ38 anime is just a fancy way to say cartoon. japanese cartoons usually have more quality than american, and most of the best american that have received awards like the batman series of the 90s were animated in asia. there are also serious and sureal animations with a extremely high quaity yu would expect, at least if you have in mind the cliche of anime in mind. watch this: watch?v=5lqX00TVKj0 take your time to seek quality anime, if you like animations, and youll be pleased

  • These caused WWII

  • what is the music of the 5:22??

    please tell me..

    thanks ;)

  • 5:27 it looks like rap moves you think NAH maybe rap was more influenced then you think then again its a cartoon

  • japan supplying the world with weird shit since 1933

  • @roboY2K5123

    >durr i dont know anything about japanese folklores

yeah we know the have fucked up shit but this is from their folklores and stuff...every country has them...

  • scary......really scary (o_O)

  • Wow for a 1933 film the animation seems to be more fluid compared to the Animes being made today.

  • 1:00 wtf?

  • most people don't know how difficult it is to make an animation, and this was made in 1933, imagine how hard it was back then!!

  • BIZARRE

  • I waited, but Felix the Cat never showed up.

  • 1933? This must be very rare. The reason why I say that is because I heard a rumor that most of the films made before 1945 in Japan were supposedly destroyed due to the atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima. Of course I could be wrong. Feel free to correct me.

  • @YungReg88 The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the firebombing of Tokyo, didn't help much. Neither did the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. Between those two events, Japan has lost most of its early film history.

  • This is so cute! lol

    especially at the end

  • the monsters are so creepy!!!

  • somebody should fan sub it.

  • I love old cartoons from Tex Avery and Late Night Black & White. Ah, so good.

  • 昭和8年か、音声が入ってるということは、これより古い映像がまだあるはず。当時は弁士の時代から音声が入るようになり、最初に音声が入ったのはこの数年前のはず。

  • Cool, this is like the first anime!

  • @BandakaKush first anime is "Pauvre Pierrot" (1892)

  • Vewy goooooooo...

  • legal. :)

  • that was trippy!

  • I love this. Subarashii!

  • That is f$%king amazing!

  • i couldn't get a word. subtitles by any chance?

  • This made no sense at all

  • @93LilJoker I think you'd have to understand Japanese culture to understand.

  • @mdalsted Clearly

  • is this the first ever Anime?

  • @nobodysperfect06 No, there are other animes more old than this one, including animes from the 1920s.

  • This Definitely bears a striking resemblance to the Bimbo cartoons done by the Fleischers. It's definitely likely that they were influenced by the Fleischers. They were pioneers in the field after all. Even Walt Disney was influenced by them.

  • 8:54 This part makes me almost scream out loud and jump back from the screen while watching it by myself at night.

  • @centrosphere xD lol

  • @centrosphere LMAO!!!

  • the fuck was that?

  • Great, thanks, now I'm not getting any sleep at all tonight....

  • its anime, when it was actually good o_O

  • Are you saying anime isn't good now?

  • its to bad this doesnt have subtitles cause i really want to know what they are saying

  • This interesting cartoon seems more like a Japanese Fleischer TALKARTOON of 1930-1931.

  • cute~

  • If anyone can translate this, I could post a subtitled version!

  • This is one of my favorites!

  • I think this is one of the most creative things I've ever watched. Thanks a lot for uploading it.

  • boy is this trippy

  • Somebody, please, pass the acid.

  • crap... pointless

  • @lorileeslove

this isn't crap you dumb bitch, this is a classic japanese cartoon!

  • howd it go from this to anime?

  • Ima just go out and say something were all thinking...

What the FUCK is goin on?!

  • Very Disney-styled, especially from the reactions the character portrays

  • @665885

    .

Much more influenced by the Fleischer Brothers than by Disney.

  • @marknyc9

In my opinion, I say it draws inspiration from the early Merrie melodies cartoons.

  • the first anime XD

  • Love it! You don't have to know a word of the language to follow and be highly entertained by this.

  • Trippin'. Really, really trippin'.

  • 1933??? howzit they usin the multiplane camra then??

  • Love the old japanese music it sounds so cool[= its come a long way now a days when you watch japanese cartoons (anime) all you here is j-rock and j-pop.

  • qué joya!

  • @Basinber joya?' pff xfabor es + bIeN Un pedazo de carbon

  • this was originally chinese

  • @ArchetypeXE

Where did you read or view? Can you read Chinese character? I had been studying Chinese literature since high school student age in original Chinese character. But I've never read such stories.

Transformation into human of fox and raccoon dog is Japanese folklore, (though I know a Chinese story of white snake which transformed itself into woman).

  • you liar.

    there is samurai.

you are like korean, always saying "ths is originaly us!'

  • 4:10 - Oh look, its a singing black condom.

  • cool

  • So, this what Osamu Tezuka watched as a kid.(lol)

It's a cute little bit of oddness. Lots of fun. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  • Thank god Walt Disney inspired animators all over the world.

  • @HyperSonicXtreme I would say this resembles a Fleischer cartoon much more than it resembles anything Disney did

  • beautiful animation..... love it!

  • This is WAAAAAAAAAYY better than Dragonball and Pokemon, and all that other BS that';s being put out now! That was 1 of the most Surreal cartoons I've ever seen.

  • It's hard to imagine that as this was happening, 10 years later, the peak of WWII would begin for japan...

  • Why was animé smoother back then?

  • 奇妙な変身や魔法の発想がすばらしい。電話先にテレポーテーションするなんてシュールすぎますねw。カメラワークも非常に独特で面白いです。日本人から見てもfelixの影響が見てとれますね。

  • this reminds me of 'felix the cat'

  • Thank you for uploading this! :)

  • Wow I personally felt this was cool, unique, and a bit creepy

    I loved it!

  • @gatheringleaves only a bit? ; p

  • Haha, I love ancient cartoons... they're so creatively trippy. ^_^

This is the first Japanese one I've seen.

  • BTW,before one year the appearance of this work, in 1932, the first pornography animation "Suzumi Fune" was produced. This porn anime was banned at once and the producer Hakusan Kimura was arrested by police. I am looking for it....

  • Now I know why Japanese allied with Hitler.

    This is disturbing as fuck.

But music was good though (way better than music of Western cartoon of the same period).

  • Our overseas neighbors have come a long way in the field of animation.

  • @NinjaGhostScorpion

    Right?

    XD

  • What the hell.

  • this is a pretty intresting cartoon .

  • бешельдэ

  • Aw, this was awesome! I wish I knew what they were saying...

  • @pooryorik3

Let me sum it up for you:

A kitsune disguises itself as a samurai and spends the night at a temple where two tanuki live. The little tanuki discovers the kitsune in samurai form, and tells his father (or grandfather) about it. And since tanuki and kitsune are natural enemies in Japanese folklore, a fight ensues. I don't really understand all that they're saying either, but I got all I needed to know from watching this film a bunch o' times, and reading my Anime Encyclopedia.

  • Do they have a collection of all these old Japanese animes on a single DVD? I would pay a full weeks salary just to get my hands on that! anyone can help me out?

  • @animationeer

Thanks to war and natural disasters, so few of these early treasures survive. But you can own eight of them on "The Roots of Japanese Anime Until The End of WWII" by ZakkaFilms. I got this DVD for my birthday last year, and I highly recommend it. You may also view the trailer here on YouTube.

  • An interesting cartoon. It's good quality, the only thing I dislike about it is how characters and objects just appear and disappear.

  • Are you kidding me that's what makes it so appealing in the first place!

  • wow, this is quite good, its like the steamboat willie of anime.

  • What a classic style UB Iwrerks cartoon?.

  • Even today the animation is stunning. The entertaining plot and use of classic Japanese folklore contributes to the appeal as well, even if I don't know what they're saying!
