People, please, stop and think for just a second. This is very clearly a sound byte. The comments I've read here truly dishearten me. Greedy teachers? He is explaining WHY the NEA is an effective advocate for the nation's educators and schools. He is explaining that the NEA is effective BECAUSE it has power, not that its objective is to obtain power at the expense of students. You are allowing your biases to cloud your judgment, simply because you have heard a union leader use the word "power".
@agoral7040 He said that improving the schools and lowering the drop out rate was important but could not come at the expense of employee rights and collective bargaining. the NEA is what so many unions have turned in to: PARASITIC SCUM
USA kids were #5 on the world's top education list when the Dept of Ed was created, for the purpose of making our kids #1 again. Now they're #23 on the world list. The Dept of Ed and the NEA's track record speaks for itself. One definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over, even when you know it doesn't work.

Get it yet? Power Corrupts. Apparently so much power in fact, it matter not what you little piss-ant taxpayers think, the NEA is going to rub your nose in it like a bad puppy.
Unions are running this country into the ground for their own power profit and satiation. And they don't give a flying shit what you think of it, because they have the power and you don't.
And why are we allowing this to go on at our expense?
This country had a great educatinal system before Carter established the Department of Education. Since then, the more money spent on educating our children, the worse their education has become. Now we have a generation of zombies.
@bbridals Hear! Hear! The solution is to END THE MONOPOLY. Monopolies are never in the interest of the consumer, or of freedom. Put the choice into the hands of the customers – the parents – & see how fast the schools (public & private) improve, & the salaries/benefits fall into line with those of the taxpayers. The free market levels the playing field & provides the best opportunity for improvement & fairness.
This guy and the greedy teachers should be appalled! This is shameful! To think these dorks actually publicly make statements like this. So self-serving. Listen to the teachers applause! A standing ovation? Show this on every nightly newscast. No wonder the states are broke. You think these losers give a damn?!
Government / union monopoly at work right here. You gotta pay for their inferior product, even if you choose to homeschool, or private school your kids. Because anything that interferes with their interests is "too high a price to pay". This is probably the most honest thing I've ever heard a lawyer, let alone a union boss, say.
Excuse the typo of "indoctrinators". Either way, the Hell with the greedy teachers and their unions. I would trust a pimp over a liberal teacher. With a pimp, what you see is what you get. With a teacher, they are wolves in sheep's clothing and are Hell-bent and determined to indoctrinate your kids with Marxist/ Progressive ideology. Their goal is to make your kids hate their country, their parents (if White), their faith, and the President as long as it's not Obama. Up yours teachers.
This should make everyone hate public school indcotrinators...I'm sorry, I meant teachers. Unions and liberals are destroying America, and they must be stopped in the voting booths.Teachers DON'T CARE about your kids! They only care about tenure, pensions, the NEA or AFT unions, and only having to work 180 days when most of us work 240-280. If you love your kids, take them out of public school and homescool them -- or sacrifice luxury for private school.
Basically... Your institutions are the moral equivalent of a child who is whining in a corner and continually bashing his head against the wall. Eventually you might tire out and stop... or you might give yourself a concussion... in any case a mature parent figure needs to step in and help you out before you get hurt any further or do any damage to our walls or your own skull and brain.
Advancing rights and educating people means upholding the law and ethical standards- not moralizing a bible.

Education needs to go back to local control.
