He should be wearing gloves and a weight-lifting belt. I'm surprised Mr. Mentzer didn't mention that. Nonetheless, he's a legendary trainer. I miss him.

@piousone If you train with proper form, there is no such thing as 'taking chances'. You can use a belt if you're doing your heaviest sets, but you shouldn't wear the belt at all times since you're preventing your lower back and abs (intrathoracic pressure) to function properly.
All you guys calling him weak are just showing you have no clue about bodybuilding. I'm not even going to explain it to you. You just have *no* clue and it's funny. :-)
If you watch the entire DVD, you'll see that Markus goes through a very grueling high intensity back workout before doing dead lifts. He's already exhausted before doing these sets.
lol why do people comment about the weight marcus lift. Remember 1 thing, this is HIGH INTENSITY WORKOUT, where doing an exercise with perfect forms till absolute failure. so what if you can lift very heavy weights but doing it in a shitty form? its how we work our muscle that counts
the only reason he deadlifted such a small weight for his size is deadlifting light weights in the beggining wears you down by alot, if he just stacked the 3 plates on without any of the easy shit he probably could have gotten atleast 15 reps
@zignationer you have no idea of what you are talking about. Markus was already exausted of the pullovers and lat pulldowns. bodybuilding is about working out a muscle group to its full capacity, not how much you can lift.
if this guy were to deadlift conventionally, he'd be putting up some serious weight, however he's trying to lift it with as much emphasis on the specific muscles as possible. makes it a lot harder.
You got to remember that size doesn't mean strength, strength comes from syncronisation of muscle fibres, if you work for strength your working to increase the amount of motor units/muscle fibres that are employed into lifting, thats why you lift heavy or fast, bodybuilders work to increase muscle therefore rep range will be along 8-10 reps powerlifters 1-3 he may be big but his muscles may not engage the same way as powerlifters do.
mike and ray were both ill by this stage in their lives. mike was recovering from a nervous breakdown and ray had a kidney disease. so their appearances had changed due to the stress/impact of their illness.
and the lifter is at the end of an extremely hard workout so most of us wouldn't even be standing after what he's been thru.
After watching this video and reading the comments, I noticed there was a lot of speculation about the amount of weight Markus was deadlifting. People seem to forget that Markus is a bodybuilder, not a powerlifter. To all the keyboard warriors out there who claim that they can deadlift more than this, that's fantastic, I'm sure Markus is very pleased for you. Just remember, you are the one watching a video of him, not the other way around. Haters gonna hate.
@adammichaelbreen It doesn't matter who is watching who. I'd say people are watching this video because of Mentzer more than because of Markus. You can replace Markus with any other good bodybuilder but you can't replace Mentzer because of his technique, which is the important part here. Anyway people are underestimating the fact that Markus is doing HIT here, not a regular routine. He emphasizes on the negative and that is why he doesn't have a lot of weight on.
What happened to poor Mike and ray Mentzer? They went from massive herculean figures to decrepit old men in less than ten years.. I know they both past away in 2001.. @ all haters.. they filmed this movie with ALL heavy exercises on one day. Im pretty sure none of you guys would be able to do 20 diff. Heavy Sets for the whole body on one day.
Also another point to bring up that maybe not many people are noticing is the fact that he's controlling the negative for a very decent amount of time for most all except of course the last rep in which he reached failure. So all you people saying he looks like he could deadlift more...I'm sure he could deadlift a lot more just not with in the controlled manner that he does here with 315.
Terrible. Why not show it from the side so the form is demonstrated? And while you are at it take off your shirt and pants so the form shows. And ditch the music..
OK, so ive been trying to do deadlifts for a while now but every single time i mess up my back hardcore and it screws my leg training over for at least a week. Nebody got some tips?
all these comments are ridiculous, saying he is weak and not strong etc etc...first of all it was his last exercise which makes a world of difference! I myself after a year and 8 months of training, after almost 10 years off, can work up to 315 for 3 sets of 6 after 2 warm up sets, but i always do deads first. If i made it the last exercise i know i would be hard pressed to get those same numbers, Oh did i mention im 180 lbs!! Another thing is his form was absolutely perfect!!
@stony911 This is true to an extent, but 315 is not heavy for a deadlift by any stretch of the imagination. Especially when you consider that he looks like he benches at least 300.
It would have been more understandable if his last set had been 405. A guy his size should be able to pull 500 of the floor at minimum. The cognitive dissonance here is like having a 4 cylinder Honda under the hood of a Peterbilt semi truck.
Go to failure, i love that shit. If you want to bitch around the gym and not break a sweat go to planet bitches where you can get free tootsie rolls and wait on free pizza nite.
Apparently there are thousands of you people all over the internets, that can come straight from the womb bending horseshoes. And yet, we never see a video or hear about you competing.
Look, the World record suited DL for a teen is 683 pounds. You really expect people to take your claims seriously?
Also, I like how not one person did any research. His name is Markus Reinhardt which Mentzer mentions during the video. He focuses on HIT training and is a pro natural bodybuilder. Whether he's done roids in his past or not he is still massive for a pro at 21" arms in the off season. Yeah.... you all know nothing hahahahaha.
@Ikats "pro natural" ?? shows you know jack shit about bodybuilding, those of us that know the inside scoop on this industry know there is no such thing as natural. test, wintrol, igf, gh, insulin are the mainstays of "natural" training.
@Ikats "pro natural" ?? shows you know jack shit about bodybuilding, those of us that know the inside scoop on this industry know there is no such thing as natural. test, wintrol, igf, gh, insulin are the mainstays of "natural" training. mentzer knows the same, if not less info than todays average lifter.
Why is everyone on youtube so dumb? The guy said "I'm living off fish" so he's clearly contest dieting with very low carbs, it's the end of his workout, and he's doing one of the most taxing compound exercises. It's also like Retronicer said, HIT. His form is flawless and he is flexing his lower back and hamstrings as hard as he possibly can while lifting this weight. If any of you payed any attention and knew anything about bodybuilding you wouldn't be bashing him.
He sucks. I could demonstrate better form due to the fact that me, being only 13, can deadlift 616lbs RAW with no steriod-aid or any other drugs and using perfect form and stance whilst doing so!
I have titles for best technique in deads in school and fitness ones as well!
@ThePhillip I'm with you there. His H.I.T. training system was the best thing for me. i do it once ever 2-3 months for 2 weeks. A great shocker for muscles.
@marsh8417 juice should make him much much stronger than your average guy. you're right man this is fucking awful. i could do 120kg for 5 reps at 16 with no training and shitty form. this guy sucks.
@marsh8417 Well as they said in the beginning, he is tired. This was his last exercise. Besides, when building muscles it doesnt mather how much more weight you take then the other guy, do as heavy as you can with proper form.
@marsh8417 He's not training for strength. Mike was a premier bodybuilder in his day, and im pretty sure a bodybuilder would prefer to be big and weak then small and strong, you gotta admit hes pretty big for only deadlifting 140
@marsh8417 He's not training for strength. Mike was a premier bodybuilder in his day, and im pretty sure a bodybuilder would prefer to be big and weak then small and strong, you gotta admit hes pretty big for only deadlifting 140
@marsh8417 He's not training for strength. Mike was a premier bodybuilder in his day, and im pretty sure a bodybuilder would prefer to be big and weak then small and strong, you gotta admit hes pretty big for only deadlifting 140 and pushes himself pretty damn hard
@marsh8417 Mentzer advocated doing reps extremely strict: eliminating all momentum and slow. That increased the intensity of the lift. If that man went into the deadlift with the idea of simply lifting as much weight as possible he could fired off at least a hundred more pounds ~ at least - and probably much more in a few weeks simply yanking weights !! Personally, I use both techniques.
@PacificSurgeNJ Well said.! :) .it seems there are a lot of fools who are armchair warriors here. And know NOTHING about HIT training..To those guys: If you have the energy to deadlift heavy weight at the end of a HIT workout, you are NOT working out.
@MrCherryKirsche Yea! I recently started using the type of high intensity rep cadence that we see in these videos and the weight definitely goes down. I train every mon, wed, fri, and I can't emagine doing more.
@marsh8417 I agree he's alot weaker than you'd expect. I'm smaller than him but still stronger doing deads. But to call that fake muscle is bullshit. He's probably worked hard and achieved alot just by building the mass he has. If you're a bodybuilder, then growth is the most important factor. Not strength.
@Athnagzo everyone seems to think this with body building, but most if not all body builders don't reach their goals without touching on all 3 elements: muscle training (strength, power& endurance), cardiovascular, and flexibility.
It really bugs me when people think that body builders only do power/strength training. The guy in the video would NOT look like that unless he trained all 3 aspects. This is the basic of the basics for body builders.
@Athnagzo He's not weaker. He can probably dead more than you could. But this is HIT and it focuses on establishing a constant mind-muscle connection. Why do Yates and Mentzer perform only 8-10 working sets TOTAL for each body part, with 3-4 exercises? The next time you barbell curl: only curl say, 40 lbs. Instead, close your eyes, flex your forearms and biceps hard, and squeeze harder than you have ever squeezed before at the top while thinking of your biceps. This is HIT & this is intensity.
@MegaPositiveEnergy You really have no idea what you're talking about. If your logic was true, most powerlifters would be buff (when they're not). You can gain strength while building muscle, but you don't necessarily build muscle by gaining strength.
@Athnagzo hey buddy, i have spoken with markus on many occasions and trust me he could have lifted more than that, it was put on a little for the video....if he had lifted his maximum he may not have executed it with such good form and also you have to think about the exercises he had already done by that time, all done with very little rest in between....using perfect form always means lowering the weight slightly but that is the right way to do things for maximum results.
um, you guys who comment about how "weak" he is on only doing that many reps, are a bunch of idiots. this is the end of his back workout, so hes totally tired out with no energy. watch the previuos videos before this one and understand
@idiotnoobbum I agree with you big time. I'm strong as hell, use to own two US records, but even back then, if you came in at the end of my workout, you would laugh.

MJBNOW 1 year ago
Terrible. Why not show it from the side so the form is demonstrated? And while you are at it take off your shirt and pants so the form shows. And ditch the music..
KimmieAmshay 1 year ago
@marsh8417 He is a bodybuilder not a powerlifter you fucking idiot. The judges at Olympia don't ask how much you can deadlift.
adammichaelbreen 1 year ago
OK, so ive been trying to do deadlifts for a while now but every single time i mess up my back hardcore and it screws my leg training over for at least a week. Nebody got some tips?
cmiller8492 1 year ago
all these comments are ridiculous, saying he is weak and not strong etc etc...first of all it was his last exercise which makes a world of difference!

Who cares is hes strong or not. that's not his goal of his sport, what a bunch or retards you are
stony911 1 year ago 2
@stony911 This is true to an extent, but 315 is not heavy for a deadlift by any stretch of the imagination. Especially when you consider that he looks like he benches at least 300.
It would have been more understandable if his last set had been 405. A guy his size should be able to pull 500 of the floor at minimum. The cognitive dissonance here is like having a 4 cylinder Honda under the hood of a Peterbilt semi truck.

Not sure if troll.

Look, the World record suited DL for a teen is 683 pounds. You really expect people to take your claims seriously?
LexPhilogus 1 year ago
Also, I like how not one person did any research. His name is Markus Reinhardt which Mentzer mentions during the video. He focuses on HIT training and is a pro natural bodybuilder. Whether he's done roids in his past or not he is still massive for a pro at 21" arms in the off season. Yeah.... you all know nothing hahahahaha.

@Ikats "pro natural" ?? shows you know jack shit about bodybuilding, those of us that know the inside scoop on this industry know there is no such thing as natural. test, wintrol, igf, gh, insulin are the mainstays of "natural" training.

bodizone1 1 year ago
Why is everyone on youtube so dumb? The guy said "I'm living off fish" so he's clearly contest dieting with very low carbs, it's the end of his workout, and he's doing one of the most taxing compound exercises. It's also like Retronicer said, HIT. His form is flawless and he is flexing his lower back and hamstrings as hard as he possibly can while lifting this weight. If any of you payed any attention and knew anything about bodybuilding you wouldn't be bashing him.

@marsh8417 Well as they said in the beginning, he is tired. This was his last exercise. Besides, when building muscles it doesnt mather how much more weight you take then the other guy, do as heavy as you can with proper form.

Personally, I use both techniques.
bcbobbie 1 year ago
@marsh8417 he did a full HIT workout of chest and back prior to this. watch the vids
PacificSurgeNJ 1 year ago
@PacificSurgeNJ Well said.! :) .it seems there are a lot of fools who are armchair warriors here. And know NOTHING about HIT training..To those guys: If you have the energy to deadlift heavy weight at the end of a HIT workout, you are NOT working out.

@MrCherryKirsche Yea! I recently started using the type of high intensity rep cadence that we see in these videos and the weight definitely goes down. I train every mon, wed, fri, and I can't emagine doing more.
CadeMcArtor10 5 months ago
@marsh8417 I agree he's alot weaker than you'd expect. I'm smaller than him but still stronger doing deads. But to call that fake muscle is bullshit. He's probably worked hard and achieved alot just by building the mass he has. If you're a bodybuilder, then growth is the most important factor. Not strength.
Athnagzo 10 months ago 17
@Athnagzo everyone seems to think this with body building, but most if not all body builders don't reach their goals without touching on all 3 elements: muscle training (strength, power& endurance), cardiovascular, and flexibility.
It really bugs me when people think that body builders only do power/strength training. The guy in the video would NOT look like that unless he trained all 3 aspects. This is the basic of the basics for body builders.
And trust me they are very very strong.

jrehman 10 months ago
@Athnagzo He's not weaker. He can probably dead more than you could. But this is HIT and it focuses on establishing a constant mind-muscle connection. Why do Yates and Mentzer perform only 8-10 working sets TOTAL for each body part, with 3-4 exercises? The next time you barbell curl: only curl say, 40 lbs. Instead, close your eyes, flex your forearms and biceps hard, and squeeze harder than you have ever squeezed before at the top while thinking of your biceps. This is HIT & this is intensity.
jrehman 10 months ago
@jrehman Then go put on a g-string and flex in the mirror like a faggot. lol strength for the win!
mojomatt176 9 months ago
@mojomatt176
i know quite a few faggots - i ain't seen one flexing with a g-string in a mirror.
HyperboreanRex 9 months ago
@Athnagzo
I strongly disagree that the growth is the most important factor.Without strenght your biceps will not elevate
even a piece of paper.
To grow bigger strenght needed, otherwise muscle cells stop to react to the same weight.
Adaptation - basic princip

MegaPositiveEnergy 9 months ago
@MegaPositiveEnergy You really have no idea what you're talking about. If your logic was true, most powerlifters would be buff (when they're not). You can gain strength while building muscle, but you don't necessarily build muscle by gaining strength.
blackfoxmp5 5 months ago
@Athnagzo
you arent stronger stupid fuckface!
he does this weight because he wants to teach how to perform a deadlift with perfect form!
i saw him deadlifting 200 kg for some weeks lifting for reps....
xeli1994x 7 months ago
@Athnagzo hey buddy, i have spoken with markus on many occasions and trust me he could have lifted more than that, it was put on a little for the video....if he had lifted his maximum he may not have executed it with such good form and also you have to think about the exercises he had already done by that time, all done with very little rest in between....using perfect form always means lowering the weight slightly but that is the right way to do things for maximum results.
npdoughty88 7 months ago
@Athnagzo
For goodness sakes, the lifter is giving a demonstration. He didn't get as much mass as he has by lifting light weights.
Danger555 6 months ago

um, you guys who comment about how "weak" he is on only doing that many reps, are a bunch of idiots. this is the end of his back workout, so hes totally tired out with no energy. watch the previuos videos before this one and understand
