I think this movie is Edward Norton's Taxi Driver (1976). With his character's many delusions, and schizoid episodes, he comes off as a borderline psychopath, much like Travis Bickle, who is a full blown psychopath. Norton's character, like Bickle, has a lot of trouble fitting into society. They can't relate to anyone or anything. Both Norton's character and Bickle write letters to their parents lying about the fact that they have met the women of their dreams.
