As disliked as they are for their flaws as instruments, mellophoniums have a place in my heart simply because of Kenton's work with them. As I mellophone player, I hope to one day get the opportunity to try out one of these horns- my understanding is that they're quite rare now.
The large horn in the picture are called Mellophoniums. my jazz band at my community is gonna play this song next quarter. i get the lead trumpet part!
awesome! I'm playing this song in my high school band at the moment,
its probably one if not the most challenging piece we've played in the entire time ive been at high school and im a senior now so its pretty awesome to be playing a song like this
We played this in my highschool jazz band. That was back in the early 70's. Loved it, as I did most of Kenton's stuff. I've got this laying around on cd somewhere in the house. Artistry In Rythym, I believe.
stupid people are so lucky...

It's interesting (in a good way) to find a piece where trumpets don't have the melody for the entire song! They barely even have it here!

My wife also played this in school and she never heard the original arrangement until I played this for her - Stan Kenton was the greatest!

I'm so glad this is up here! This piece is generally too advanced for high schools and those recordings are all I can ever find...
