@InvocationXII No. This is old and for the Original Galaxy Samsung Epic with the physical keyboard. They are not interchangeable. Google How to root (your phone) on (your baseband ie. EL30)
@Kennyglass123 I am in fact using the Galaxy S one. Not the Galaxy S 2 one. however I haven't had my phone that long and I realize that the firmware I'm using is considerably newer, so I just wasn't sure if this would work for me or not. ^.^

@TheEricwaters4 Rooting this way won't work if you are on Gingerbread. You need to go to the "How to root Samsung Epic on EI22 or EL30" videos and flash a newer ROM. This is very old.

Im looking into purchasing a use/refurbished epic 4g for learning everything on how to root, flash roms, etc. Is it necessary for the phone to be activated and/or have a working esn? Wouldnt wi-fi be sufficient enough for me to do what I am seeking?
@lpkepic No you can run roms if the phone isn't activated! The only thing you won't get is signal bars and 3G data! Wifi will work... you can get one with a bad esn and it'll be fine.
This is insane after I rooted and Syndicate flashed with the latest software it works but EVERY app is crashing insanely dude, I can;t even use the phone properly now..!

I DID NOT put the SyndicateFrozenROM in phone..(dumb me didnt follow your instructions explicitly!) Shortly after loading the one click root, I installed Titanium back up. Now when phone reboots, its stuck on Samsung screen. Am I doomed? I would have u call me but phone is paper weight. Can you email me and advise what steps to get phone working again? Thanks.

I've rooted using clockworkmod and am trying to run the SyndicateFrozen ROM. during the wipe data process, will I lose all of my data? or will it restore after the flash?
If I already have SyndicateFrozenRom 1.1.0, can I dump SyndicateFrozenRom 1.1.1 on my SD card and overwrite 1.1.0? Or do I need to do anything else? Like I said, it's already rooted, has ClockworkMod 3.0.0.6 and has SyndicateFrozenRom 1.1.0. Also, is there any higher versions of SFR? I saw a note saying something about 1.1.2 coming soon but that was in May. Thanks.
@sparkyva2 Go ahead and put 1.1.1 on your sd card, and flash it without wiping anything... should update. If you do run into problems, you will need to wipe data/cache/dalvik 3X each and flash 1.1.1. After you ahve that installed, let me know.
@qbking77 Well, I did it and everything seemed to be going smoothly. I am having a bit of problems with Gmail crashing making a forced closure, but I had that problem with 1.1.0. what can I do when my comp isnt showing ports in the device manager. though it is shown in my modem section in the device manager. cdma workshop says it connects but when I click on "read" it says "failed.. phone does not answer"
i just installed this on my EC05 modem, i have the right clockwork, i wiped data/cache.dalvik x3, installed the ROM and rebooted but now its stuck on the Samsung splash screen, its been like 3 minutes is it normal? i made a back up should i just take out the battery and install the back up? or wait it out like you said it takes awhile.....

i was extract to my c drive, and kept having problems, installed 32bit drivers for samsung ( solve 2/4 driver install) and then extracted to E drive ( and it worked lol )
spent 2 hrs looking this crap up and didnt notice anyone saying try different drive.
By the way - when I run wireless tether, the sprint hotspot tether seems to run as well - is this normal? can I remove sprint hotspot application? Or should I not worry about this?
@teddymontoya1 Do not worry about it. Sprint hotspot cannot be removed since it is built into the framework. Without it you wouldnt be able to wireless tether ;)

GREAT video and narrative, thanks for putting this together it saved me hours of work. I have a few questions: the reason I did the root was to enable free wirless tethering but both barnacle and android wireless tether and it doesnt connect with my laptop (Win7).

@f0rkz1 You can get that from the market... What are you trying to use superuser for? Root explorer allows you to edit system filse such as the messaging app and phone app and things of that nature.
cont from post below: I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times, with fresh downloads many of those times. I have used a data cable from an HTC, BB, Palm Pre, and the stock cable. I have cleared data, and reset to factory, I am in usb debugging mode, I'm running stock EC05 currently, running a windows 7 64 bit toshiba laptop. I have restarted laptop and computer many times, pulled the battery on the phone. any suggestions?
I'm running into some issues here. I have downloaded and install the drivers that you have linked to. and the one click root you are using also. every time I click the run.bat and push any button to continue, I get a message that the phone is not connected. I have read through all these post and have seen at least one other with the same issue, and I have done extensive searching online, to include the xda developer forums. I have followed all the troubleshooting steps everyone has mentioned
Is there a better aka faster but still as stable as the stock kernel for SFR? if there is can you let me know and how you can install it on my epic, the current one is great but im just asking if there is any better out there.
@mfabro198919 For my phone... Syndicate 1.1.1. The thing is, all epics handle different roms differently so I would recommend trying different ones out and see which one you like the best.
@qbking77 when I locate the file (rom) on my SD card and click on it, it does not do anything. It does not allow me to hit YES or to do anything where the rom would download on the phone.
OK so I love using the syndicate frozon roms but for some reason after a week or so my phone just freezes and restarts all the time, it only happens with this rom, which happens to be my favorite, why is this happening, before flashing I always perform 3 wipes and 3 cache clearing and 3 davik cache clears, why does this happen
[second post] Hey I have skyfire internet installed on this ROM and everytime I enter my bookmarks it force closes. Never fails. I'm thinking of enabling journling but do not know if that will fix it. Any suggestions of what I should do to fix this? ty
Had the same problem. Checked the android event log and it was looking for "folder' field that was not present in the bookmarks table. To fix it download terminal emulator from the market place and type the following commands:
@qbking77 i guess the real question, sense ive already been using 1.1.0 and i converted my system to ext4, i then downloaded the new update and put it on my sd card, do i have to convert the new updated rom to ext4?

@qbking77 Alrighty...I flashed the 1.1.1 yesterday on top of 1.1.0. No problems, went just fine. Today my Epic just shuts itself off randomly, restarts, and now I have Android system, Swype, Messaging, and GAPPS force closes. CONSTANT FORCE CLOSES! Forgive me, but it's been a while since I found root and flashed a brand new ROM, but will I lose all of my phone's current data if I wipe data(restore factory)/wipe cache/wipe dalvik and reflash the rom? What's the best solution here?
@bcalvin87 You will have to wipe data/cache and dalvik 3X each and reflash 1.1.1. Then I would go to the 1.1.1 thread and click on the link to turn journaling on and flash that through clockwork.
When you say first boot up takes A WHILE, how long are you talking. my phone is still booting as we speak and its been about 10 minutes. The soft keys are lit but the screen is still black. It showed the samsung logo at startup as usual but now it is just blank.
Wish I had seen this video before hand. Didn't know about the CWM Ext4 change, and didn't have the rom on the flashdrive yet. Had to Odin to stock and start again. Super aggravating.
@qbking77 I got it all flashed and working. Then had to pop the battery and ran into the problem of not having journaling on, so was getting a ton of FCs. Had to reflash and then I reenabled journaling. I had to remove SetCPU because I kept having problems with the phone not waking up, even with making sure the minimum was always above 200MHz. Now the only problem I have is 3g keeps dropping out causing the "new PRL" noise. I flashed the EE03 modem, but it's still doing it. No idea why.
@qbking77 I haven't gone back to stock long enough to find out. Never had the problem before though. Going into phone info(*#4636*1111#) and making sure the preferred network was WCDMA helped for a little while.(It said UNKNOWN before). It happens most consistently when hooked to a wall charger, while playing plants vs zombies, and while I was walking yesterday listening to an Audible book.
qbking77, in your experience, is there much difference in the battery life between the standard and the fully loaded version of this ROM? I'm currently on the fully loaded version.
Also, does the standard version have the that drop down notification thing like the fully loaded does?
i wanted to asked you i follow all instructions from your video after i downloaded all the necessary files i disable my antivirus and when i unzip the file mine comes out at run.bat and when i double clicked on it it does not run my phone i have tried several websites and it always says that im missing the rageagainstthecage file. i see the file on the unzip folder but for some reason i cannot due it, any advice would be appreciated.
@AAB9562 You need to do something with your anti virus. Your anti virus deletes that file, so you need to make sure it's shut off or it will continue to be deleted.

@Kyle768k I had the same problem. Even went back to Sprint and got a new handset! What finally did it for me was changing the USB port that the cable was plugged into. When you hook the handset up to the computer, you MUST see a successful install of the device. Keep unplugging and changing USB ports. It took me about 10 tries before it worked.
This may sound weird, but is there any way to unblock ads with this rom? I play a game called Gun Bros and you can earn a special type of in-game currency pretty easily through the ads. Its not necessary for the game but the best equipment can only be bought with the special currency and the only way to earn it outside of the ads is to buy it with real money.

i had backed up apps on titanium back up from a stock rom eb13 an i just got this syndicate rom an when i reinstall the apps it freezes up the whole phone an it keep saying app forclose why
@nyclegend20 Titanium backup to backup the apps you need. That's what I use. I also make sure to flash the keyboard fix to fix any skipping keys with the physical keyboard. I made a video for that if you need it :)
@qbking77 when i hook it up to my computer it says device drivers installing, and the CDC Abstract Control Model(ACM) keeps showing installing driver for the last 10 minutes, nothing is happening it wont instlall, the Samsung drivers show as ready to use.
when i click run and i click any key it says "daemon not running, starting it now" and stays there for like 5 minutes nothing happens, what should I do?
Does this method also work for version 2.3.6? Or would I need to use the same method used for the Galaxy S II one?

@sethman88 That is because on stock, there is no 1X icon at all. This is a mod made by the ACS team so you know what kind of speeds you are getting.

By the way - when I run wireless tether, the sprint hotspot tether seems to run as well - is this normal? can I remove sprint hotspot application? Or should I not worry about this?

@teddymontoya1 Do not worry about it. Sprint hotspot cannot be removed since it is built into the framework. Without it you wouldnt be able to wireless tether ;)

Using Wireless Tether 2.0.7 I get "your phone is in an unknown state, is your device rooted?" - no option to select epic

You might want to re flash the rom..... Wipe everything 3X and flash the rom... use the wireless tether that comes with the rom.

GREAT video and narrative, thanks for putting this together it saved me hours of work. I have a few questions: the reason I did the root was to enable free wirless tethering but both barnacle and android wireless tether and it doesnt connect with my laptop (Win7).

I would also be happy setting up wire tether (that way i dont drain the battery).

@teddymontoya1 No problem! Glad you liked it. Thanks for the info. Try these directions:
Go into settings of the Wireless tether app before you start
Change the Device Type to Epic
Then, ensure that you are NOT on 4G
Start the tether
Once connected on 3G, you can turn on 4G, it will work now.
NEVER turn on 4G before you start the tether

And wired tether does not work at the moment. Just plug your phone into your pc to charge and run wireless tether.

@f0rkz1 You can get that from the market... What are you trying to use superuser for? Root explorer allows you to edit system filse such as the messaging app and phone app and things of that nature.

cont from post below: I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times, with fresh downloads many of those times. I have used a data cable from an HTC, BB, Palm Pre, and the stock cable. I have cleared data, and reset to factory, I am in usb debugging mode, I'm running stock EC05 currently, running a windows 7 64 bit toshiba laptop. I have restarted laptop and computer many times, pulled the battery on the phone. any suggestions?

I'm running into some issues here. I have downloaded and install the drivers that you have linked to. and the one click root you are using also. every time I click the run.bat and push any button to continue, I get a message that the phone is not connected. I have read through all these post and have seen at least one other with the same issue, and I have done extensive searching online, to include the xda developer forums. I have followed all the troubleshooting steps everyone has mentioned

Is there a better aka faster but still as stable as the stock kernel for SFR? if there is can you let me know and how you can install it on my epic, the current one is great but im just asking if there is any better out there.

@mfabro198919 For my phone... Syndicate 1.1.1. The thing is, all epics handle different roms differently so I would recommend trying different ones out and see which one you like the best.

After I locate the file on the SD card, it is not giving me the option to press YES as you did. What could i be doing wrong?

OK so I love using the syndicate frozon roms but for some reason after a week or so my phone just freezes and restarts all the time, it only happens with this rom, which happens to be my favorite, why is this happening, before flashing I always perform 3 wipes and 3 cache clearing and 3 davik cache clears, why does this happen

[second post] Hey I have skyfire internet installed on this ROM and everytime I enter my bookmarks it force closes. Never fails. I'm thinking of enabling journling but do not know if that will fix it. Any suggestions of what I should do to fix this? ty

Had the same problem. Checked the android event log and it was looking for "folder' field that was not present in the bookmarks table. To fix it download terminal emulator from the market place and type the following commands:
su
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.browser/databases/browser.db
ALTER TABLE bookmarks ADD COLUMN folder text;
.quit
*Don't forget to end the alter table query statement with a semi column ";".
Exit terminal emulator and try to add a bookmark to skyfire.

@qbking77 Alrighty...I flashed the 1.1.1 yesterday on top of 1.1.0. No problems, went just fine. Today my Epic just shuts itself off randomly, restarts, and now I have Android system, Swype, Messaging, and GAPPS force closes. CONSTANT FORCE CLOSES! Forgive me, but it's been a while since I found root and flashed a brand new ROM, but will I lose all of my phone's current data if I wipe data(restore factory)/wipe cache/wipe dalvik and reflash the rom? What's the best solution here?

@bcalvin87 You will have to wipe data/cache and dalvik 3X each and reflash 1.1.1. Then I would go to the 1.1.1 thread and click on the link to turn journaling on and flash that through clockwork.

When you say first boot up takes A WHILE, how long are you talking. my phone is still booting as we speak and its been about 10 minutes. The soft keys are lit but the screen is still black. It showed the samsung logo at startup as usual but now it is just blank.

@Travenport No no not that long. If you're having trouble after rooting with 3.0.0.6, flash 1.1.0 THEN flash 1.1.1.

@qbking77 I got it all flashed and working. Then had to pop the battery and ran into the problem of not having journaling on, so was getting a ton of FCs. Had to reflash and then I reenabled journaling. I had to remove SetCPU because I kept having problems with the phone not waking up, even with making sure the minimum was always above 200MHz. Now the only problem I have is 3g keeps dropping out causing the "new PRL" noise. I flashed the EE03 modem, but it's still doing it. No idea why.

@qbking77 I haven't gone back to stock long enough to find out. Never had the problem before though. Going into phone info(*#4636*1111#) and making sure the preferred network was WCDMA helped for a little while.(It said UNKNOWN before). It happens most consistently when hooked to a wall charger, while playing plants vs zombies, and while I was walking yesterday listening to an Audible book.

@thedarkharlequin I would say try and go back to stock and see if the same issue occurs. Maybe a cell tower is faulty by your house.

qbking77, in your experience, is there much difference in the battery life between the standard and the fully loaded version of this ROM? I'm currently on the fully loaded version.
Also, does the standard version have the that drop down notification thing like the fully loaded does?

i wanted to asked you i follow all instructions from your video after i downloaded all the necessary files i disable my antivirus and when i unzip the file mine comes out at run.bat and when i double clicked on it it does not run my phone i have tried several websites and it always says that im missing the rageagainstthecage file. i see the file on the unzip folder but for some reason i cannot due it, any advice would be appreciated.

@AAB9562 You need to do something with your anti virus. Your anti virus deletes that file, so you need to make sure it's shut off or it will continue to be deleted.

@Kyle768k I had the same problem. Even went back to Sprint and got a new handset! What finally did it for me was changing the USB port that the cable was plugged into. When you hook the handset up to the computer, you MUST see a successful install of the device. Keep unplugging and changing USB ports. It took me about 10 tries before it worked.

This may sound weird, but is there any way to unblock ads with this rom? I play a game called Gun Bros and you can earn a special type of in-game currency pretty easily through the ads. Its not necessary for the game but the best equipment can only be bought with the special currency and the only way to earn it outside of the ads is to buy it with real money.

@nyclegend20 Titanium backup to backup the apps you need. That's what I use. I also make sure to flash the keyboard fix to fix any skipping keys with the physical keyboard. I made a video for that if you need it :)

@qbking77 when i hook it up to my computer it says device drivers installing, and the CDC Abstract Control Model(ACM) keeps showing installing driver for the last 10 minutes, nothing is happening it wont instlall, the Samsung drivers show as ready to use.
