  • weight is a good thing when it comes to dollies.

  • @eternalpictures True, but for most amateur filmmakers, you need something small and lightweight. The more professional you get, the heavier all your equipment gets.

  • @esotericsean the reason things look amateur is because its small and lightweight. More weight = a smoother shot.

  • this is awsome how much is it?

  • Check their website at paintedsheepdolly

  • Nice review....the only thing missing was some tight shots of the wheels on the track to show the 360 degree feature of the wheel assembly.

    Details, details, details.

Still, I'd prolly buy this dolly based on your review.

  • Definitely recommend it! We still use ours all the time :)

  • good job guys.

  • hey, where can i buy this?

  • Painted Sheep Dolly (dot) (com)

  • Thanks again for this amazing review guys, I ended up buying one and I love it! I have one question though: what did you guys use as a track connector? Mine runs smoothly on the regular track but I can't get the connector perfect, which creates some bumps between pieces. I would love to know what you guys use. Thanks!

  • great video guys question what was the effect called when u tested out the dolly at 3:01 when u switched locations but made it looked combined how do u do that and what is the effect called?

  • I totally forgot what it was called (it does have a name, though).

It's done by layering the two moving dolly shots on top of each other and then masking out the top layer. I shot the first one with a tree in it and the second with a pillar so they would both have vertical lines that would appear to line up with each other.

  • I looked through one of my books on filmmaking and found that it's called a "Fill, Reveal Frame".

  • Ah-hah, thanks!

  • The painted sheep dolly is pretty awesome, but I built mine myself and it folds up smaller. It does just as good a job, I was pretty amazed how it turned out. Check out my channel for some test footage. Of course, if you don't have the time to make one, this is your No.1 option!

  • I have a question. I have known about this dolly for awhile i was just worried it wouldn't work well enough. But now that i see that you guys like it i am planning on getting it. I would love to make my shots as smooth as possible, would adding weight on the dolly make it smoother ( making the shaking less apparent?). I am just wondering if that would work or not. Because in photography that whats it like if the camera is heavier, do the same rules apply with this? Thanks!

  • Actually yes, adding weight can help a LOT to make it smoother. Though, it also takes skill to use a dolly. The more you practice, the better you'll get :)

You can definitely get very smooth results with this dolly even without added weight.

  • Guys... what ever happened to weekly shows?.. ok, that was a little demanding but seriously, u guys bring joy to the world of filming... ok.. thats it for now.. big fan - teja.

  • Great video! I've been looking for an affordable dolly, I might just have to purchase one! Thanks sooo much for this video.

  • i know that the scarlet costs $3000 when it comes out but that's only the camera itself. i think that you still have to buy the monitor and all of the other components to it for example the monitor, matte box, handles, etc. how much do you think a complete scarlet with all the components would cost?

  • Well, unlike the Red One, the Scarlet has a built in lens and flip-out lcd screen, so that's already almost everything you need. I'm not sure if it comes with a battery, though and you'd still need to buy CF cards - so if you include those, I'd say you could get a fully working camera for under $5000. Let's hope I'm right :)

  • What type of cameras do you guys use for your youtube videos? settings etc...

  • We use a Sony PMW-EX1 - shooting in true 1920x1080 progressive 24 fps mode :)

  • And that quality would be great to see in HD at vimeo com. ^^ Seriously you should make a channel there.

  • Starting with version two, we will be on Vimeo (it's our little secret, hehe) :)

  • (awesome!)

  • dude, i want this! but $260 isnt in my budget...

  • Nice look like a nice dolly but im going to make the indy mogul one but if that doesn't go to well i'll get this.

  • really cool. even though the word 'professional' is tossed around a lot, I'm sure that if you have this thing, you're bound to feel like a professional at work :)

  • another educative video

  • what program did u guys use to do that transition at 3.02? it looks really cool!

  • Sony Vegas Pro 8.0

Just a little layering and masking :)

  • what do u recommend... Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 ? Final Cut Express? Final Cut Pro? which one do you guys use the most and which one gets you the most bang for buck? P.S. Which one has Image Stabilization (like D-shaker like features)? Thanks...

    Teja.

  • Send me an email: esotericsean(at)takezer0(dot)(com)

I have more to say than can fit in a little YouTube comment box :)

  • woah this is really weird.

i was just going to make a dolly next weekend.

im going to make mine from indymoguls tutorial on there tracked dolly.

i wouldnt want to buy something for 250 dollars.

what piping did you use again and how much?

  • Fantastic :) as always

  • looks awesome. It will be on my ever expanding list of toys.

  • sounds like a decent investment. i should check it out. did they give it for you for free to review or did you buy it?

  • how do you go about transporting the rods? i never could figure out that part. they wont fit in a car and it is too impractical to carry.

  • They came in 20' sections, so we cut them in half. 10' sections fit in my tiny Scion xA pretty well.

  • yeah but did that decrease the smoothness? i would imagine so. but never had a dolly before

  • Actually, it doesn't effect it at all because at no single moment are all the wheels going over a bump (they're offset so there's always something to dampen it out).

  • I downloaded Virtualdub a while ago and it was confusing as hell. Maybe I'm gonna give it another try though. By the way the transition at 3:02 was pretty badass! How'd you do it?

  • Hehe, we just cut out the right side of the video in the first shot and placed it on top of the other shot.

And yeah, Virtualdub does have a bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to it it's fairly simple and worth it.

  • Jorge Garcia made a cameo at 4:14!

great video guys, cant wait to see more

  • another ownage vid gret work =]

  • lol, thanks :)

  • hey guys , how is your pmwex1 working for you ?. there is a bunch of new cameras coming out now , and what do you think about the new red scarlet coming out in 09 . maybe i should wait for it before i decide to get the pmwex1 ?

  • Oh, we love the EX1, but I think when the Scarlet comes out, we're going to sell it and get TWO Scarlets :)

  • was it nice and quiet? i remember using one of the crappy ones from school back in high school and it was rediculously loud and annoying lol

  • It was actually near silent! Definitely not loud and annoying, hehe

  • Hey, nice to hear from ya, man. We're going to try and aim for doing real episodes again - hopefully one per week :)

And to answer your question, the dolly is made of wood and the pipe we used is made of ABS plastic (similar to PVC, but not as flexible).

  • wow, just what i was looking for! I wanted a slider though, but this will do :D

  • It's totally worth it, you won't regret it :)

    What's a slider, if I may ask?

  • AWESOME SEAN, YOU GUYS ''ROCK' '/@!

  • Thanks Adonis! :)
