I play the drums and i read music and i know whats what.

i have to go with portnoy, its just the technical side of his drumming, he keeps great pace and rhythm..

But technically, he is play a routine here, that if slowed down has a set pattern, its not just mashing away on some drums..

@tommasotemporin mangini may have better technique than portnoy BUT mangini's playing lacks the most important aspects of drumming in a band context: creativity and feeling. while portnoy alway incorporated fresh ideas into every dt song, mangini just sounds like a freakin drum computer; every hit sounds the same and his playing is robotic and cold. in fact his drumming is so bland and boring that while listening to the new album i kinda asked myself if those were drums or just backround noise.

i think you got it wrong mate, the guys at DT restricted MM quite a bit in terms of crearivity, i mean, petrucci programmed the drums and then gave the "song maps" to Mangini so he could add his nuances. so, mangini came up to jordan and john with what he wrote and then petrucci and jordan decided what mangini would play or not so... also, the drums sound kinda weak in the final mix

@1691jabp i know that JP wrote the drum parts on ADTOE but think about it; MM said that he put his own spin on the whole thing, so there has to be some of his input in there. yet most of the fills are very basic and pretty scarce (most of the time he just plays the groove straight without any fills anyway). and i don't think that JP and JR didn't want any creative ideas from MM, it was just the best he could come up with which imho isn't very impressive.
