I love the cheesey echo effect on the narrative. Many thanks to WJW TV 8 in Cleveland, Ohio and Ernie Anderson (aka Ghoulardi) for showing this cinematic gem back in 1961. The concept behind this movie was great.
A fondly-remembered sc-fi picture from a misspent childhood that featured a technical nemesis, rather than just another run-of-the-mill "monster" (even if much of it was animation). The quasi-scientific banter was especially fun to a child who later went into the sciences.
Along a similar line is the 1953 film "The Magnetic Monster," a rather good picture, even closer to scientific fact. Don't overlook "The Thing (from Another World)" (1951) or "Robin Crusoe on Mars (1964), both true classics.
I watched this repeatedly on TV in the '60s and even as a kid I thought it was incredibly cheap, unconvincing, and unscary.
Some of the mass-panic scenes (which supposedly are taking place in Mexico and Southern California) are actually outtakes from "The Revolt of Mamie Stover" (1956), filmed in Honolulu.
I saw this on TV on New Year's Eve '62/'63. One of the rare occassions I got to stay up late. I was 8 about to turn 9. The local station played this and a Three Stooges movie back-to-back (interesting combination, eh). Do you know if the movie is available anywhere?
This is one of the best movies ever made. I saw this when I was kid, on "The Big Show" out of Toledo, Ohio, and it terrified me. I now have the DVD of it, and every year, in January, I watch it. They couldn't have picked a better actor, John Emery, to play the role of Dr. Elliot. Anyone recognize the voice of "Arnie" who operates the computer? That's the guy who did the original voice of George Jetson!

Clearly the best early sci-fi with regard to everything being art deco, including the mechanical monster.
