This is a great list but I noticed there was nothing from the first three doctors. No arguments from me here, but I'm curious what are your favorite episodes from the first ten or so seasons?
I agree with you on Caves of Androzani, and I did personally love Peter Davison. I would've put The Five Doctors in there, first off. If we were watching Matt Smith, then Peter, Chris, Tom and Jon popped out of nowhere. Most of us would jump for joy. So imagine how people who first saw the episode would feel when all their past doctors had appeared. It really played forward the confusion that really defines the companions. And the betrayal of Borusa? Sheer amazing. Sheer... Amazing
I so agree with you about The caves of Androzani. I really love Midnight but I don't think it should be a 2nd place. And personaly, I would never put The pandorica opens/Big Bang in a top 10 list.
I don't like Midnight because the passengers were blubbering idiots, but I guess that tells me the actors are doing their jobs by pissing me off! Good job, actors!
I agreed with.......most of what you had to day. Big Bang/Pandorica was the only I definately wouldn't have included. But then, I don't like Amy Pond at all. It seems you don't like Rose though so I suppose we're even. I would've included Androzani, but I don't think I would've given it number 1. All in all a pretty good list of wonderful things.
I'm not crazy about "Empty Child." I know it's a one of the better written episodes, but I just don't know much about the London blitz and the ninth Doctor is my least favorite, if you don't count the eighth, that TV movie sucked.
I agree with you completely about "The Caves of Androzani" and of course the best Doctor Who story would be written by Robert Holmes, directed by Graeme Harper, and featuring Peter Davison as the Doctor!
Also, very well said about Doctor Who being at its best when it is both epic and very personal. That is what I believe makes the likes of 'The War Games', 'The Curse of Fenric', 'The Girl in the Fireplace' and 'The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang', among others, such masterpieces :~)
I would have chosen 'The Waters of Mars' over 'Midnight', awesome though that story is. And I view the 10th Doctor not as inconsistent, but as multitalented. And I'm a bit surprised to not see 'Blink' or 'The Girl in the Fireplace'. But then this is a top *ten* list. So hard to narrow it down with so much to choose from. That being said, these are all absolute classics. I completely agree with your #1 choice. Thanks for sharing :~D
with the series 5 finale i definantly agree, RTD thinks that having a billion daleks therefore means its epic. And the way you explain what epci was and the two parter as a whole justifies the people saying it is anti climatic. It's about the characters this time not the billions of alien and "epic" battle. RTD actually doesn't know that much and is very straightforward thinking. I'm glad Moffat is head, he deserves it and so does the show.
@priamyvate I'd have to give it a year to let the episode sink in and revisit it. That way we'll see if it stands the test of time. I think The Girl Who Waited would definitely crack the top 20. But top 10? I'm not sure.
@MrTARDISreviews Interesting, its just in your VatD you seemed like it was a Really good story, and then in your TGWW review you seemed flabbergasted. But yeah, good to let it sink in
I dont know if you know this, but in The Caves of Androzani ( and I agree best story ever!) it was actually Robert Holmes intention to put the 5th doctor in such a hard place because Holmes thought that Davison had it too easy as the doctor, so for his final story he decided to put him (quite literaly) through hell.
(Part 2) We have an inverted opinions for the episode: you think it's the 2nd best story of the series, I think it's the 2nd worst story in the new series (number 1 being 42). I just don't see what you see in this episode that's good, the villain is annoying, the characters are stupid and barely dimensional, the bad (or unexplaned) science, and the overall boring episode is what (for me) lowered RTD down a level or two making the Moff the best (he was better already).
8:28 Um, no. Midnight never came alive at all. If you think about it really thuroughly Mr TARDIS you'll find at least a dozen or so problems with the script's logic or the characters. Honestly if you want the characters to believe that the entity was completely inside the Doctor, you need to make the audience believe. When I watched the final 5 minutes of this already boring episode I could barely contain myself from bad mouthing RTD's stupidity when it came to writing this.
@thesyfychannel15 I agree. I did not believe that any of the clichéd characters could be real. What really annoyed me in the episode is that the Doctor is too passive. He comes across as weak. He's a Timelord for God's sake. Can you imagine the 3rd Doctor takin' dat sh*t. Hell no. That woman is sooooo annoying as well.
I disagree with you about Rose, I really liked her and I think she was an important part of the 10th Doctor, when she left we got to see the dark side of the Doctor. Martha, however was a rather boring character. I liked Rose as she was a sorta dumb ordinary girl with no job, therefore when she got in trouble I was scared for her. I never got scared for Martha, I felt she didn't need the Doctor.
@vccool72 Same here with me and my familiy. We love Rose tyler, in every video he says she is bad, she is great, I liked Martha, but she wasn't that good. Donna Noble have some of my favourite moments of this show and she has my favourit companion personality, but Rose is Great.
Unlike MrTARDIS I like DW exactly how it show, I don't nip pick the show untill it collaps, because I don't see anything to pik. Also any episode with the name Dalek has my attention, or dalek story in all is great.
Peter Davidson is my favourite classic doctor, followed by Tom Baker is his later episodes, so I'm happy Caves got the top spot. One thing I don't get though which is that if you enjoy ROTD so much why did you put it at the bottom?
Human Nature/Family of blood wouldn't make it as high as 13th in my list. I think in that episode it was unnecessary that the doctor did what he did, he changed into human form (which I think was just an excuse for Tennant to play a human), had a huge responsibility on Martha, having her suffer racial abuse for a month and by that matter condemmed alot of people to death, with the family nuking the village. Better if 10 just fought them simply.
I just realised something. In the empty child, the 9th doctor kind of states that he is Santa clause. but then in the 11th doctors first Christmas special (A Christmas Carol), he says he's met Santa clause, and Santa clause is called Jeff, and shows a photograph of himself with santa (or Jeff). he just contradicted himself. call me a geek if you like, i dont care, just making a point
From the Hinchcliffe-Holmes-Baker-Sladen-era, Brain of Morbius and Seeds of Doom also join Genesis of the Daleks and Pyramids of Mars on my top ten list. Also, Terror of the Zygons is superb, even with the poor SFX on the Loch Ness Monster. Caves of Androzoni doesn't make my top ten list UNLESS I'm being generous and including as many Doctors as possible. In picking the actual best stories, without regard to "fairness" about 6 or 7 will come from Seasons 12,13 & 14.
Nooo not Caves of Androzani...That episode could not capture my interest at all. But from the dozen or so episodes of JNT's time of producer, I can't really say I've enjoyed any of them...So it's probably just me.
David Tennant is WAY overated! I can put my hand on my heart and say that I didn't enjoy one story he was in. He is my least favourite actor to play the Doctor because he didn't have a sense of mystery about him. Everything that he felt or did was obvious and loud. His 'emotions' were shown for the world to see, where I think they should have been subtle and mysterious. I got bored watching Midnight because I was screaming at the TV. Those people were retarded on that bus.
Thanks for this list of great episodes! I am fairly new to the Doctor Who fanbase (started watching last season), and I have seen most of the NuWho. I wanted some great Classic episodes to watch and this list helped a great deal. I absolutely love the Caves of Androzani and Pyramids of Mars. And Midnight is one of my faves as well. Thanks!
Got to admit, I used to think some of these stories wern't that gd but when you talk about them in this way, especially #1, it makes them seem so much better and realise the good side to them and how bad alot of Russel T. Davies stuff was!
Shockingly, Midnight is probably my favourite Nu Who episode of all, for all the reasons mentioned here. Still can't believe this was written by the same guy who made those *awful* season closer "epics"! Scary, intense and really DOES take the Doctor somewhere he's rarely been (especially Ten): helplessness. I think why it shakes him so much too (compared to Pyramids) is that it wasn't some monster that nearly killed him, it was ordinary people... and he could do nothing.
@BanjoOz I would agree with the 'ordinary people' nearly killing him part, except the Doctor still continues to suck up to humans and constantly comment on them (The Next Doctor, The Pandorica Opens, Victory of the Daleks etc.)
@MrTARDISreviews I think his unease at the end was actually less a shaken faith in humanity (he's seen evil humans before) and more about his faith in himself dealing with them. He's faced down evil super-aliens and nearly died before, but here these 'ordinary people' he'd gotten to KNOW turned on him despite his best efforts. All his talk only made things worse, two people died because of it (one he couldn't save, and one because he couldn't "be the hero" this time).
@BanjoOz I totally agree, RTD wrote the series 1 finale! That baffles me, that was my favourite epsiode by RTd and certainly one of the best dr who epsidoes of all time. But RTD stillhas written far more stinkers! What a shame maybe if hedidn't write like 7 epsidoes evry season then you know, he'd be better.
@BanjoOz I don't mean to be insulting but I hate Midnight because I found it to be an illogical, boring mess of bad acting, impossibly stupid one-dimensional characters, and so much bad or unexplained science that it will make Arthur C. Clarke so angry that he'll rise from the grave to kick RTD's retarded ass.
3:59 was when I decided Eleven WAS The Doctor, once and for all. Better late than never, eh? :) As someone who went from apathy to hatred of the new series under RTD, S5 - basically, from Vampires of Venice onwards, made me totally fall in love with the show once more. I felt like a kid again, for the first time EXCITED by the show! I think you're spot on in saying that RTD tried so often to be 'epic' or have 'arcs' but this was the time it actually worked. I'm a fan again! :D
I love the season 5 finale story but i have 1 gripe. Stonehenge isn't that old.
Compared to many funeral grounds in Ireland Stonhenge is positively young. Doesn't detract from the episodes though and they are still some of my favourites :)
Hey, I know I'll probably look stupid upon asking this, (I try, I really do.) But in the Series 5 finale, I just have a few questions. How did the alliance know where Amy's house even was, did the pandorica exist before they did the whole psychic residue thing and who made stonehenge transmit? And I still find it hard to grasp the whole alliance thing. Just to clarify, I do agree with everything you said about these episodes, and I think they are brilliant.
I think the Wargames should have been in the top ten (or at least an honorable mention), such a great story and chock full of cliffhangers. Not to mention the Doctor is forced to seek help from the last place he wants to (his fellow timelords). Which of course introduces the whole Gallifrey and the Doctor on the run with a stolen TARDIS concepts into the show.
Isn't The Caves of Androzani still free to watch on YouTube since the BBC uploaded it? Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch it there first and then buy the re-release on that Revisitations boxset.
And City of Death (since it's been mentioned) would definitely be in my top ten.
Though there are too many stories for me to set up a list, I know Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead is my favourite (and first ones I ever seen) by far. Where would you place it?
Seems like this Caves of Androzanni is extreme popular... I should check it out once (I never found it so far).
Interesting list. Idk if I could make one, but I'd definitely include Midnight. I love Sutekh, and PoM is an okay story, but I just can't get people's holiness over it. Feel the same about some other stories, but I've pretty much given up on understanding. :P I need to watch Caves of Androzani again; seen it once, and I forget how I felt about it.
i love the pandorica opens easily the best cliffhanger in doctor who's history in my personal opinon, although i do like rememberance of the daleks and it's cliffhanger too that you mentioned
I love the Caves of Androzoni, mostly because of the phantom of the opera like character. However, as a kid Peter Davidson was, and still in many ways is my favorite Doctor. If you have the time, I'd love it if you sent me a message with your thoughts on The Impossible Planet/ The Satan Pit as they are probably my favorites of the new series.
I must be in the minority, but I think Caves is a tad overrated. I would agree with you if all 4 episodes were like the last 2, but the first one especially was boring. Empty Child/DD was fine but I really didn't like the fact that they needed to throw in the sexual innuendo involving the Doctor. Dalek was a far superior 9th doctor story IMO. I thought Pandorica was a bit too convoluted and abused the timey-wimey principle too much.
I agree with you completely on pyramids. Sutekh was one my favorite villains... they need to bring him back IMO. Midnight was probably RTD's best story and the first time Doctor Who really delved into psychological horror. I wouldn't put it in my top 10 but it's good. I'm surprised you included nothing before the 4th doctor.
A Whovian who hasn't seen ''City Of Death"? You need to fix that fast! It's got authentic Parisian locales, Douglas Adams' droll wit, the villainy of Julian Glover, and Lalla Ward in her schoolgirl outfit! And I couldn't disagree more about David Tennant 's performance as the Tenth Doctor being "inconsistent"---have you even SEEN all of his episodes? One thing I can agree on, "Love and Monsters" is the worst episode. Of ANYTHING.
i find it very hard to pick a no. 1 but at a push i'd have to say robot
purely because i saw it when i was about 6 and uktv gold used to show repeats of classic who (anyone else miss those days?) and i was used to seeing pertwee
i'd watched all of his tenure and when he regenerated i was like "NOOOOOOOOO!!" but then tom baker came in and instantly had me hooked, the smile, the wide-eyed stare, the voice and the awesome performance and comedy
I decided long ago that once you pass a certain point it's impossible to decide which story is best, they each have their own merits and how much do you let yourself be influenced by your personal opinions? If I only included those with my favourite Doctor and companion then I'd be left with McCoy's Final series and remembrance of the daleks. While I felt the empty child was a bit bland I think the others are deserving. Highly enjoyable list.
I could disagree with some of these choices, but I think I would have put many of the same on my own list, "The Cave of the Androzani" definitely at the top. Great list, and great job.
I couldn't think of a word to describe 10, but you got it exactly right with 'inconsistent.' And yeah, your number 1 would be somewhere in my top 10, but my number 1 spot is reserved for 'The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang.' :3
I'd love to see a review of 'Love and Monsters' xD
I have to say, but this has got to be your most well-made video so far. The editing is top-notch, the writing is excellent and well-thought out and just simply feels very professionally made.
@Strobertat While Daleks in Manhattan sucks ass i can't call any episode in Series 3 bad. They range from pretty good to amazing, whereas all the other series have some pretty bad or meh episodes. Series 3 was the darkest and the most consistent.
I knew from the very first SECOND that you posted Part 1 of this countdown last week that Caves of Androzani would be your #1... and I fully agree! It's my all-time favorite, and interestingly enough, my very first introduction to Doctor Who. The final scene of Episode 3, when you realize he's actually talking mostly to himself, holding off regeneration... WOW. And do I even have to say anything at all about the finale?
2:06 I agree. A repeated word doesn't amount to a story arc. Story arc implies that events of one episode are linked to another in a story which continues from one episode to another. Bad Wolf doesn't amount to a story arc, Torchwood doesn't amount to a story arc, Mr. Saxon barely amounts to a mini arc and RTD can call that giant nebula thingy in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End anything and it wouldn't make any diference.
@thesyfychannel15 I felt it worked in Series 3 (i use the term 'worked' loosely) because of the plot elements from The Lazarus Experiment and 42. Also the theme of the general election building up slightly towards the end.
i have to say i do agree with your list apart from a few exceptions eg genisis but overal an amazing list, can i ask your doing a victory of the daleks review by your title card? i thought you already done one
Midnight is freaking amazing and I completely agree with you about Tennant's acting (he's fun, but good lord was he awesome when the writers chose to show us the darker aspects of his mind). Overall (and this is only in new series terms) The Pandorica Opens is my favourite episode, completely.
And finally! Someone else who actually likes series three (though I put series five top, 3 comes in a close second). The Master is awesome.
Oh man, you know me so well! Not only does PoM feature the 4th Doctor at his best, but it introduces the greatest and most evil villain in Doctor Who history. I hope they bring back Sutekh the Destroyer someday . If I was showrunner I would have a multi-doctor story in which they go to battle with Sutekh whom is in control of a massive army filled with all of the doctors greatest enemies! Daleks, Cybermen, Silurians, Yeti, Ice Warriors, Sontarans. Fanwank...but we deserve it!
@WhoviansUSA Yeah, I suppose. Can you imagine, "Kneel before the might of Sutek, and the Daleks, and the Cybermen, and the Ice Warriors, and the Absorboloff" *They all turn towards it* "Get out"...
YES! I knew "Caves of Androzani" would make it to #1. Mind you, I haven't seen it's entirety since I'm just on the second season of the 5th Doctor's run (on "Snakedance" right now), but at least I own a DVD copy of the best DW story ever. From the end scene that someone had linked to me, I CRIED. It was so powererful and depressing how 5 dies to save Peri. I'll have to make sure to watch "Pyramids of Mars" when I get the chance too, I haven't seen a lot of the 4th Doctor yet.
Midnight might just be the most intense thing I've ever seen on TV, when I rewatched the episode a few weeks ago my heart was racing because of how intense it was. The characters were great and I felt really sorry for the character of Dee Dee
For me my top 10 Doctor Who episodes are: 10. Father's Day 9. Amy's Choice (just for Toby Jones) 8. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances 7. VIncent and the Doctor 6. The Eleventh Hour 5. Gridlock 4. Midnight 3. Dalek 2. Remembrance of the Daleks 1. Blink As you can see I haven't been exposed to many of the classic Dr Who stories
Also, for the record, i didn't include Blink and Turn Left because i didn't want to include episodes in which the Doctor was a supporting character. Both of those episodes are 10/10 quality, don't get me wrong.
@MrTARDISreviews I'm glad that you didn't include Blink or Turn Left for those reasons. As great as they are, you're perfectly right for not including them on the list. I never understood people who picked either story as their favourite Tenth Doctor story when he's barely in them.
@MrTARDISreviews Psh, Blink is still overrated for me. Even though it's nearly completely amazing, people overrate it and over-exaggerate how brilliant it is. Which disappointed me on the first viewing.
Ahh, Midnight. I put it on during a lunch at work. My co-worker had just come in and said he had to go out and get some lunch. An hour later, we are all glued to the screen and then spent another 20min analysing the story. Then my co-worker said "Now, I really have to get some lunch!" It was that good. For all the haters, RTD did something right. Tennant & the cast was incredible. It's one of the those stories that stand on its own, not just as DW. Thanks for including it so high on the list.
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE MIDNIGHT. It's possibly the best RTD script ever. It's better than anything Moffat has ever written, though, don't get me wrong, I love Moffat. Midnight is a beautiful character study, and the interactions between the characters is amazing, and the claustrophobia is amazing.
Love it, very different to my top 10, but none the less 10 great stories. I would really recommend having a look at some of the lost stories, as you said with 'Genesis' I think every doctor who fan needs to hear 'Power of the Daleks'. My top 10 atm goes something like this: 1. Power of the Daleks 2. Pyramids of Mars 3. The War Games 4. The Myth Makers 5. Turn Left 6. Greatest Show in the Galaxy 7. The Romans 8. Terror of the Zygons 9. Web of Fear 10. Amy's Choice
@MrBobbobthegreat Turn Left is an amazing episode – the writing, the acting, the scale – it's oppressive, but I cannot watch it a second time. It's so heart breaking. I always skip to the end to the HOLY **** moment! I remember it fondly.
@loupetron Thanks, completely agree with everything youve said. Turn Left is a masterpiece, the jewel in the RTD era of Doctor Who. This and (as MrTardis says) 'Midnight' showsus RTD can be a fantastic writer.
Great agree with every one of them and not joking we have very similar top 10s (4 of them would be the same) but great choices. The only one I didn't think was worthy of the list was "The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang" - yes, its the best finale of the new series, one of the best episodes of the new series and has a great ending it just felt too OTT and lacking in an even feel. But great list all the same.
Damn character limits. Great follow-up anyway Will, I mostly agree with your list here and it's a very good one, even though half of them wouldn't make my own top ten (though some may make it in the top fifty at least). Your explanations for each are truly wonderful.
Why everybody hates RTD?!! He was grete. He saved show from dying and wat every one do about it...Of coursescream every five second "RTD is shit". You ungrateful bastards

I never got scared for Martha, I felt she didn't need the Doctor.
vccool72 8 months ago

One thing I don't get though which is that if you enjoy ROTD so much why did you put it at the bottom?
blackskullthunder 9 months ago
Human Nature/Family of blood wouldn't make it as high as 13th in my list. I think in that episode it was unnecessary that the doctor did what he did, he changed into human form (which I think was just an excuse for Tennant to play a human), had a huge responsibility on Martha, having her suffer racial abuse for a month and by that matter condemmed alot of people to death, with the family nuking the village. Better if 10 just fought them simply.
JoeConcerts 9 months ago
I just realised something. In the empty child, the 9th doctor kind of states that he is Santa clause. but then in the 11th doctors first Christmas special (A Christmas Carol), he says he's met Santa clause, and Santa clause is called Jeff, and shows a photograph of himself with santa (or Jeff). he just contradicted himself. call me a geek if you like, i dont care, just making a point
animationdude56 9 months ago
From the Hinchcliffe-Holmes-Baker-Sladen-era, Brain of Morbius and Seeds of Doom also join Genesis of the Daleks and Pyramids of Mars on my top ten list. Also, Terror of the Zygons is superb, even with the poor SFX on the Loch Ness Monster. Caves of Androzoni doesn't make my top ten list UNLESS I'm being generous and including as many Doctors as possible. In picking the actual best stories, without regard to "fairness" about 6 or 7 will come from Seasons 12,13 & 14.
coltperc 9 months ago
Nooo not Caves of Androzani...That episode could not capture my interest at all. But from the dozen or so episodes of JNT's time of producer, I can't really say I've enjoyed any of them...So it's probably just me.
Robospace 9 months ago

Thanks!
TheBekbek23 9 months ago
Got to admit, I used to think some of these stories wern't that gd but when you talk about them in this way, especially #1, it makes them seem so much better and realise the good side to them and how bad alot of Russel T. Davies stuff was!
3496jamdwd1 10 months ago
Shockingly, Midnight is probably my favourite Nu Who episode of all, for all the reasons mentioned here. Still can't believe this was written by the same guy who made those *awful* season closer "epics"! Scary, intense and really DOES take the Doctor somewhere he's rarely been (especially Ten): helplessness. I think why it shakes him so much too (compared to Pyramids) is that it wasn't some monster that nearly killed him, it was ordinary people... and he could do nothing.
BanjoOz 10 months ago
@BanjoOz I would agree with the 'ordinary people' nearly killing him part, except the Doctor still continues to suck up to humans and constantly comment on them (The Next Doctor, The Pandorica Opens, Victory of the Daleks etc.)
MrTARDISreviews 10 months ago
@MrTARDISreviews I think his unease at the end was actually less a shaken faith in humanity (he's seen evil humans before) and more about his faith in himself dealing with them. He's faced down evil super-aliens and nearly died before, but here these 'ordinary people' he'd gotten to KNOW turned on him despite his best efforts. All his talk only made things worse, two people died because of it (one he couldn't save, and one because he couldn't "be the hero" this time).
BanjoOz 10 months ago
@BanjoOz I totally agree, RTD wrote the series 1 finale! That baffles me, that was my favourite epsiode by RTd and certainly one of the best dr who epsidoes of all time. But RTD stillhas written far more stinkers! What a shame maybe if hedidn't write like 7 epsidoes evry season then you know, he'd be better.
Smallvillenerd 7 months ago
@BanjoOz I don't mean to be insulting but I hate Midnight because I found it to be an illogical, boring mess of bad acting, impossibly stupid one-dimensional characters, and so much bad or unexplained science that it will make Arthur C. Clarke so angry that he'll rise from the grave to kick RTD's retarded ass.
thesyfychannel15 5 months ago

Doesn't detract from the episodes though and they are still some of my favourites :)
thebobsterjones 10 months ago

KateOsKorner 10 months ago
Isn't The Caves of Androzani still free to watch on YouTube since the BBC uploaded it? Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch it there first and then buy the re-release on that Revisitations boxset.
And City of Death (since it's been mentioned) would definitely be in my top ten.
TrilbyMenetti 10 months ago
Though there are too many stories for me to set up a list, I know Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead is my favourite (and first ones I ever seen) by far. Where would you place it?
Seems like this Caves of Androzanni is extreme popular... I should check it out once (I never found it so far).
CastChaos 10 months ago
Interesting list. Idk if I could make one, but I'd definitely include Midnight. I love Sutekh, and PoM is an okay story, but I just can't get people's holiness over it. Feel the same about some other stories, but I've pretty much given up on understanding. :P I need to watch Caves of Androzani again; seen it once, and I forget how I felt about it.

thelashers 10 months ago
I love the Caves of Androzoni, mostly because of the phantom of the opera like character. However, as a kid Peter Davidson was, and still in many ways is my favorite Doctor. If you have the time, I'd love it if you sent me a message with your thoughts on The Impossible Planet/ The Satan Pit as they are probably my favorites of the new series.
carlw2006 10 months ago
I must be in the minority, but I think Caves is a tad overrated. I would agree with you if all 4 episodes were like the last 2, but the first one especially was boring. Empty Child/DD was fine but I really didn't like the fact that they needed to throw in the sexual innuendo involving the Doctor. Dalek was a far superior 9th doctor story IMO. I thought Pandorica was a bit too convoluted and abused the timey-wimey principle too much.
TheBigBlueBox 10 months ago
I agree with you completely on pyramids. Sutekh was one my favorite villains... they need to bring him back IMO. Midnight was probably RTD's best story and the first time Doctor Who really delved into psychological horror. I wouldn't put it in my top 10 but it's good. I'm surprised you included nothing before the 4th doctor.
TheBigBlueBox 10 months ago

(i have to admit i was wrong about your no. 1)
DaBigPink 10 months ago
I decided long ago that once you pass a certain point it's impossible to decide which story is best, they each have their own merits and how much do you let yourself be influenced by your personal opinions? If I only included those with my favourite Doctor and companion then I'd be left with McCoy's Final series and remembrance of the daleks. While I felt the empty child was a bit bland I think the others are deserving. Highly enjoyable list.

I couldn't think of a word to describe 10, but you got it exactly right with 'inconsistent.' And yeah, your number 1 would be somewhere in my top 10, but my number 1 spot is reserved for 'The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang.' :3

AceofGallifrey 10 months ago
2:06 I agree. A repeated word doesn't amount to a story arc. Story arc implies that events of one episode are linked to another in a story which continues from one episode to another. Bad Wolf doesn't amount to a story arc, Torchwood doesn't amount to a story arc, Mr. Saxon barely amounts to a mini arc and RTD can call that giant nebula thingy in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End anything and it wouldn't make any diference.
thesyfychannel15 10 months ago
@thesyfychannel15 I felt it worked in Series 3 (i use the term 'worked' loosely) because of the plot elements from The Lazarus Experiment and 42. Also the theme of the general election building up slightly towards the end.

MrTARDISreviews 10 months ago 11
@MrTARDISreviews I'm glad that you didn't include Blink or Turn Left for those reasons. As great as they are, you're perfectly right for not including them on the list. I never understood people who picked either story as their favourite Tenth Doctor story when he's barely in them.
TrilbyMenetti 10 months ago

Thanks for including it so high on the list.
loupetron 10 months ago
Also, I think the Series 4 plot arc was well handled, because it threw away the arc words to just make a bunch of hints throughout the episode.

@loupetron Thanks, completely agree with everything youve said. Turn Left is a masterpiece, the jewel in the RTD era of Doctor Who. This and (as MrTardis says) 'Midnight' showsus RTD can be a fantastic writer.
MrBobbobthegreat 10 months ago
Great agree with every one of them and not joking we have very similar top 10s (4 of them would be the same) but great choices. The only one I didn't think was worthy of the list was "The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang" - yes, its the best finale of the new series, one of the best episodes of the new series and has a great ending it just felt too OTT and lacking in an even feel. But great list all the same.
MrRenegadePhoenix 10 months ago
Damn character limits. Great follow-up anyway Will, I mostly agree with your list here and it's a very good one, even though half of them wouldn't make my own top ten (though some may make it in the top fifty at least). Your explanations for each are truly wonderful.

5. TEC/TDD - A great story, one of the best. 10/10
4. TPO/TBB - My favourite finale since RTD's first two, since I hated the other RTD ones (particularly S3, a series I detest). 10/10
3. PoM - My favourite story ever. It's amazing. 10/10
2. Midnight - Another good RTD script and the rare time the Tenth Doctor wasn't bland in S4. 9/10
1. TCoA - A great story, but overrated, though one of the better final stories alongside The War Games and BW/TPotW. 9/10
