Well times change and now the Youtube is oversaturated with those kinds of videos, so editors try to go for something extraordinary/special to draw attention to their work and make them stand out from the other vids.

A Cut transition as you've said yourself is the most basic and the worst looking one, this video has really smooth transitions and uses them due to the fast pace. :)
