I can understand the way people feel about casting Madonna in Evita, but you need to realize that film and live theater are totally different mediums. It would be hard to cast Broadway talent into films, a play is one thing, but having a production crew standing by, and all that plus paying for rentals and locations can really add up. To do this you needed people who knew how to make movies. If they could just cast the Broadway cast, they would have.
this is a great musical and I think Madonna did a fine job portraying the American's take on Evita, but I know when they were filming, the people of Argentina were less than happy that Madonna was representing someone that means so much to them. In that respect, she was probably a poor choice.
The problem with madonnas voice is not that she can't sing but that her voice simply wasn't meant to sing the original broadway voice part of Eva, the same goes for all the actors in this film. They always do this with musicals in films (ie phantom of the opera) where they cast big stars that aren't real singers and tweak the style and the key of every song to suit the actors ability. There are several things that bug me about this film and none of them are madonna related, primarily the casti

@Katiejane4126 Coming from a performer on Broadway - it wouldn't be hard. They had to adjust almost every single piece in the show because Madonna has no range. She can't sing. End of discussion.
Exactly. I think Madonna has somewhat of a polarizing position as an entertainer. Just as Evita Peron had the same status as a political figure in Argentina.
Madonna did a great job its not like this was stint casting she wanted the role and begged to play it, I love Patti Lupone and Elaine Paige (who no one ever seems to compare Madonna's performance too...) but I think they all played the role completely differently in the best possible ways possible!

@citybeat60 Sry but Lupone is far far far too shrill for me. Madonna's voice is beautiful in this movie. Stunningly gorgeous. You call it weak but I call it soul and connecting with the material.
@cowgirlamy1 There is nothing shrill about Lupone, her voice has depth and power, two attributes that Madonna lacks, both in her acting and singing. JMO
@citybeat60 If you call screaming power, Yeah. Otherwise, Lupone is shrill in Evita. Madonna isn't a big voiced singer but she is in the solid medium range and has enough depth and power to handle Evita the movie version superbly and that isn't an opinion it is pretty much fact.
@cowgirlamy1 Sorry but Madonna's voice is more akin to a yapping Pekinese. Her vocal skill is weak and relies on the tricks of the recording studio for any depth. Her acting record speaks for itself. I will give her credit for her ability to exploit herself and create an image based on shock value instead of any real talent or attributes. In that respect, she does have much in common with Evita.
@citybeat60 Oh please you are a deranged Madonna hater. She has proved over and over she has a good voice. No she is no Streisand but what she has is pretty darn good. The Ray of Light studio leaks where she lays down the vocals on the very demanding song proves this. It is a raw leak with her talking and breathing into the mic. Great stuff!

@PopCulture20 Madonna's voice is too high and lilting to be the powerful woman that Eva Duarte de Peron was. Patti Lupone has strength in her voice, and she makes it believable that she could have been the leader of the nation if not in title, but in spirit.
Peron had the support of workers, because in return for supporting his regime, he supported increases in pay and better working conditions. He went to the capitalists and said, it's either me or revolution. He was a corporatist.
@busheatssht "He went to the capitalists and said, it's either me or revolution. He was a corporatist." He could have been a pragmatic socialist. It's them who enforced the greatest social progress for workers, especially in Western and Central Europe. Often called "Socialdemocrat" :)
People should stop comparing Madonna to Patti Lupone... they both did amazing jobs in their own right. Most people who say this haven't even seen Patti perform the role anyway.
I honestly have to say I like the Julie Covington/ Paul Jones version better, one because it has more emotion, 2 it was the original, C the voice the voice is awfully high, IV, its longer,
* And it actually includes Che's part in this
. I know the numbering is incorrect, and that IV and * are due to the person who posted this
The Legacy of Eva Peron is being reevaluated, and for the better. She was dismissed by opponents of Peronism as a facist, and someone who personally pocketed from her postion. Increasingly, she is seen as someone who, with little personal gain, and great damage to her health, reformed class-conscious Argentine society and put large amounts of funds directly in the hands of the poorest of people. Eva Peron particularly helped the large Jewish community of Argentina overcome discrimination.
@eddihaskell The only reason Peronism is put in the same facite as fascism is due to the fact that for some, moronic reason they helped fleeing nazis. We can only speculate why. I have some theories. But in terms of true politics they were no where near Pinochet or Franco or Mussolini. Closer to scandinavian social democrats, at most resembling national syndicalists.
Peronism is an example of an extremely authoritarian welfare state. Yeah, they gave a lot away, but there was hell to pay for any leader opposed to them. Peronism long term leads to a state in which people have very little ihitiative and with a dearth of ideas. Che was right.
I love Jonathan Pryce in this movie. He doesn't have the sinister side that the Broadway Peron I've seen in clips, but he nails the tender aspects of the character.
@countrywillneverdie ya well not saying Perón was the greatest leader - ex post he wasn't. And they both lived a life of luxury at the expense of the people. But ex ante it did not seem this way, and compared to other Latin American dictators of the time he took relatively good care of the country. And unlike many US sponsored ones he did not massacre hundreds of thousands of his opponents. Strange to hold that to a man's credit, but things have to be seen in context, politically.
@dinavienna Still, he was not a dictator for he had won elecctions, he was Argentinas President. He won in rightful conditions and did many good things for the country. The fact that many say that he was a dictator just shows that is a South American President does something that the capitalist countries believes against them, he's (or she's) a dictator (I don't know if there's a word for a female dictator... ¿would it be dictatress? LOL).
@mnemosneme I agree largely from what I know about Peron's rule that he was somewhat repressive (crashing demonstrations with violence etc), but not a dictator.
However the notion someone once was elected and this means he automatically is not a dictator (please say so if I misunderstand you here!) I do not agree with.
Hitler was elected in perfectly democratic elections - shortly afterwards he started persecuting his political opponents with murder and terror. And abolished elections :)
also in the Middle East there are a few rulers who once were (relatively) democratically elected, and now win every "election" with 99% of votes (which in a democracy is close to impossible). How do they make it possible? By not allowing opponents with good chances of winning in the electoral process, by controlling the media, by persecuting and incarcerating (and sometimes worse) outspoken critics, and last but not least by manipulating elections.. are they to be seen as "elected"? :)
but I agree with you with Western/capitalist interests in South America - everyone who tried to do something for their people, and against Western political and corporate interests was demonized and is demonized. Same with the only good Iranian ruler Moussadeq, for example, a real ruler for the Iranian people, elected democratically - and murdered by the CIA and their paramilitary local watchdogs, like many good South American politicians and rulers.
He was elected two times, both times around a 60% of votes, and in both elections there were powerful oponents. Also, if you talk about Peron persecuting opponents, then you also have to say that these opponents also tries to bring Perons government down using terrorist ways.
I'm not saying he was an angel (god knows very few presidents were) but he surely was not a demon nor a dictator.
And he didn't have the media controlled, for the most important diaries (diarys) were opponents
@mnemosneme Oh I was not talking about Peron regarding media control and 90% votes (more about Hitler in the annexion of Austria, where he scored 99% (with army and secret police presence in the election cabin), and Arab leaders today).
Yes, I realize his opponents for a large part were undemocratic - they most likely would have favoured a military dictatorship at the time to protect their own interest, and not the people's. I believe he did use violence against workers' protests, too..
so yes, I guess he was neither an angel, nor a perfect democrat but you are right to say who is at that time and in South America. There was way worse to come, and the ones demonizing Peron seem to be supporters of those rulers and of US policy in Latin America, one of the biggest crimes/criminal policies of the 20th century.
@mnemosneme Hitler was elected to power (and with a very high rate of a approval) and did not alianate the people till the war started going south for him. People make the mistake of thinking a dictator takes power he is not granted. It's not how he is elected but what he does with the power that makes him a dictator. What he did to some of Argentine's most popular newspapers and with some members of the opposition and how he used demagogy is what brands him a totalitarian.
a question to everyone: i have a music class and we study musicals. Right now we have watched: Carousel, West Side Story, Evita, and are now watching Sweeny Todd. Whats your favorite?
@HarryPothead6009 I don't think Eva Peron was that smart either. She didn't get any education past the sixth grade and she just did whatever her husband told her to do. I don't support Sarah Palin, but at least she went to college!
@GoddessofCoruscant That's the main problem with people like her. They don't have the education and understanding to realize the realities of stuff like politics, diplomacy, stuff that in the real world, the problems don't end when you shut the doors of the movie studio.
@TheNuharoo yes, that's true. There is no comparision between Evita and Palin.. Palin came to her own conclusions without being told what to think by her husband. Evita just blindly followed her husband.. And at least Palin had an education. I do not support Palin's politics, despite the fact that I'm a conservative myself-- but there is a world of difference between Palin and Evita. Palin is just a soccer mom. Evita was a dictator.
@GoddessofCoruscant Evita never had the privilege or wealth to get an education, thats the whole point of her popularity, her success gave hope to the country that they too, could become something other than peasants
@8peregrint8 yes, but it was all a scam, and if you don't realize that than you are either blind or a fascist like she was. Evita hoodwinked the masses, and she was damn good at it. In that manner she was very smart. Argentina before the Perons was very wealthy. Today, BECAUSE of them it is a shithole. I know this because I've studied it and I have Argentine friends and what they tell me mirrors my conclusions.
@GoddessofCoruscant go ahead and call me a facist but thats as far from the truth as you can get, go ahead and continue enabling the rich to screw you over, there is way too much brainwashing, if it were up to people like you we would still be living in caste systems and monarchies
@8peregrint8 Good Lord, if you support people like Evita, you need a serious reality check! I am for democracy, freedom, and women's rights, everything that Evita stood against! This conversation is done!
@GoddessofCoruscant yes she went to college, and didnt learn what africas is, my friend college has nothing to do with intelligence, look at us residents, they re all educated, yet they have a lot of morrons
@ShaiHuludisCool if you like that then good for you, but madonna's a pop artist, not an opera singer. and for a pop artist this is quite remarkable, especially because people (today still) think Madonna can't sing.
@ShaiHuludisCool Patti Lupone was not the one to write these songs so yes Madonna would have STILL got this role regardless. HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR MADONNA!!!!!
@PopCulture20 Alright, you need to calm the fuck down. What I meant was that if Lupone hadn't made the Broadway version such a huge hit, there may have not been a movie version at all. Thus, you should respect Lupone for making Evita such a huge hit. I see no reason why I should respect Madonna.
@ShaiHuludisCool Well you at least respect the mark Madonna has made in popular instead of acting like a JACKASS because you think the people that came before her are better.
@PopCulture20 The only one being a jackass here is you. I don't like Madonna's style of music, nor do I care whether or not she made an impression upon popular culture, because I'm not a fan of popular culture. I like showtunes, classical music, and operatic music.
@ShaiHuludisCool You don't have to like Madonna's music but at least respect her talent because it's no secret that people like you have always been intimidated by her
@PopCulture20 Why should I respect the "talent" of a woman who I personally don't find very talented? And explain to me why I'm supposedly "intimidated" by her? Last time I checked, I never had any desire to go into the music business, showbusiness, or any other field that it related to her profession. In fact, the prospect of fame is very unattractive to me.
@southernpete1 yes, but Obama's policies remind me of Juan Peron's. And I've studied the Perons for a long time and watched Obama's rise, so don't bite my head off for that. But your analogy is a good one too.
Jajaja, es gracioso cuando aparece Antonio en el 2:48 montado en el carro reclamando por Peron, hay q admitir q hace un buen papel totalmente lleno de sarcasmo
okay i am sorry for not liking madonna thats my opinion so if u didn't like antonio banderas i wouldn't give u a thumbs down thats ur opinion and im fine with that
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
look at everyone giving us a thumbs down for saying the truth, really people i love this movie and have nothing against madonna, or evita but really it was very dramatic!
The thing about this song is that it makes out that Eva knew where Peron was being held while he was behind bars. That was not true in fact when he was in jail he got word to her to keep a very low profile. In fact both he and Eva both where fearing for their lives and she was scared to death that she would be next to be jailed...
@Carpentersfan2003 that's true that they both feared for their lifes but Eva did know where he was...She was told what island he (Peron) was going to be sent to she just wasn't behind a public protest to free him like the musical says.
@Carpentersfan2003 This movie/musical isn't historically accurate by any means, and no one is implying that it is. It's just a musical very loosely based off of real people/events.
I find it hilarious you all see Eva Peron as saintly- the woman made millions in stolen gold helping escaped Nazis hide in South America.... great song though.
No, I read my HISTORY and true yes Argentina was a safe haven for the Nazis all due to PERON because some say he was anti-semitic She EVITA played no part in it. She was not a saint but she wasnt a villainess either.
but Jews were very prosperous in Argentina and there was no discrimination against them by Peron, if fact they were very stable there than any other country at this time
There is good and bad with eva, I did alot of study on her, she did ALOT for the poor since she was once poor, yet she did alot of good things for them that would also benfit her
Yes, you're entirely right. :-) Evita may not have necessarily been 100% perfect, but at the same time, she was far from a bad person--she was just a *person*, you know, with complexities...nothing black about, nothing white, just shades of gray. :-)
im so fucking tierd of ppl saying Palin is like Eva Peron....she is NOTHING like Eva Peron. Besides what has Palin done thats as great as what Eva did? oh thats right, nothing.
but what did Imelda Marcos do for women or the poor? Evita got women the vote, brought women into the political life in Argentina and her foundation built thousands of hospitals, schools, old age homes, a children's city... do you have knowledge of her beyond the musical or do you just blindly believe what ALW told you?
@GwendolynBlack I have a feeling that when people put Palin and and Peron together I think they might be talking about Isabel Peron.. Juan's third wife and vice-president and eventual president when he died in office.. when I was watching the McCain/Palin run off I couldnt help thinking that too.. But McCain's wife Cindy to me was in the Evita role..
to be honest eva was a fool putting the nations economics to the edge not planing forward more then making the people at the time happy. she sent their nation back several years. but she was a great image as a large leader. should teach more about her cause there must be alot to learn from someone that became that great from nothing and then died like a saint and still is loved.
@1337Hansson1337 not to mention all the things she said about feminists being 'ridiculous' and 'wanting to be men.' when in the USA feminists were jailed and some even tortured to get women basic human rights. That is what I find offensive about her!
For me, the song doesn't start until 2:30.
And I don't like Madonna as a person, but she plays Evita very well.

I honestly have to say I like the Julie Covington/ Paul Jones version better, one because it has more emotion, 2 it was the original, C the voice the voice is awfully high, IV, its longer,
* And it actually includes Che's part in this
. I know the numbering is incorrect, and that IV and * are due to the person who posted this
All around though is pretty good.
Lets hear it for the Rainbow Tour!

Eva Peron particularly helped the large Jewish community of Argentina overcome discrimination.
eddihaskell 1 year ago
@eddihaskell The only reason Peronism is put in the same facite as fascism is due to the fact that for some, moronic reason they helped fleeing nazis. We can only speculate why. I have some theories. But in terms of true politics they were no where near Pinochet or Franco or Mussolini. Closer to scandinavian social democrats, at most resembling national syndicalists.
omfg4000 1 year ago
@omfg4000
Peronism is an example of an extremely authoritarian welfare state. Yeah, they gave a lot away, but there was hell to pay for any leader opposed to them. Peronism long term leads to a state in which people have very little ihitiative and with a dearth of ideas. Che was right.

Does it even matter that she was married to a dictator that almost bankrupted the country???? guess not!
countrywillneverdie 1 year ago
@countrywillneverdie ya well not saying Perón was the greatest leader - ex post he wasn't. And they both lived a life of luxury at the expense of the people. But ex ante it did not seem this way, and compared to other Latin American dictators of the time he took relatively good care of the country. And unlike many US sponsored ones he did not massacre hundreds of thousands of his opponents. Strange to hold that to a man's credit, but things have to be seen in context, politically.
dinavienna 1 year ago
@dinavienna Still, he was not a dictator for he had won elecctions, he was Argentinas President. He won in rightful conditions and did many good things for the country. The fact that many say that he was a dictator just shows that is a South American President does something that the capitalist countries believes against them, he's (or she's) a dictator (I don't know if there's a word for a female dictator... ¿would it be dictatress? LOL).
mnemosneme 1 year ago
@mnemosneme I agree largely from what I know about Peron's rule that he was somewhat repressive (crashing demonstrations with violence etc), but not a dictator.
However the notion someone once was elected and this means he automatically is not a dictator (please say so if I misunderstand you here!) I do not agree with.
Hitler was elected in perfectly democratic elections - shortly afterwards he started persecuting his political opponents with murder and terror. And abolished elections :)
dinavienna 1 year ago
also in the Middle East there are a few rulers who once were (relatively) democratically elected, and now win every "election" with 99% of votes (which in a democracy is close to impossible). How do they make it possible? By not allowing opponents with good chances of winning in the electoral process, by controlling the media, by persecuting and incarcerating (and sometimes worse) outspoken critics, and last but not least by manipulating elections.. are they to be seen as "elected"? :)
dinavienna 1 year ago
but I agree with you with Western/capitalist interests in South America - everyone who tried to do something for their people, and against Western political and corporate interests was demonized and is demonized. Same with the only good Iranian ruler Moussadeq, for example, a real ruler for the Iranian people, elected democratically - and murdered by the CIA and their paramilitary local watchdogs, like many good South American politicians and rulers.
dinavienna 1 year ago
@dinavienna
And he didn't have the media controlled, for the most important diaries (diarys) were opponents
mnemosneme 1 year ago
@mnemosneme Oh I was not talking about Peron regarding media control and 90% votes (more about Hitler in the annexion of Austria, where he scored 99% (with army and secret police presence in the election cabin), and Arab leaders today).
Yes, I realize his opponents for a large part were undemocratic - they most likely would have favoured a military dictatorship at the time to protect their own interest, and not the people's. I believe he did use violence against workers' protests, too..
dinavienna 1 year ago
so yes, I guess he was neither an angel, nor a perfect democrat but you are right to say who is at that time and in South America. There was way worse to come, and the ones demonizing Peron seem to be supporters of those rulers and of US policy in Latin America, one of the biggest crimes/criminal policies of the 20th century.
dinavienna 1 year ago
@mnemosneme Hitler was elected to power (and with a very high rate of a approval) and did not alianate the people till the war started going south for him. People make the mistake of thinking a dictator takes power he is not granted. It's not how he is elected but what he does with the power that makes him a dictator. What he did to some of Argentine's most popular newspapers and with some members of the opposition and how he used demagogy is what brands him a totalitarian.

@HarryPothead6009 I don't think Eva Peron was that smart either. She didn't get any education past the sixth grade and she just did whatever her husband told her to do. I don't support Sarah Palin, but at least she went to college!
GoddessofCoruscant 1 year ago
@GoddessofCoruscant That's the main problem with people like her. They don't have the education and understanding to realize the realities of stuff like politics, diplomacy, stuff that in the real world, the problems don't end when you shut the doors of the movie studio.
TheNuharoo 1 year ago
@TheNuharoo yes, that's true. There is no comparision between Evita and Palin.. Palin came to her own conclusions without being told what to think by her husband. Evita just blindly followed her husband.. And at least Palin had an education. I do not support Palin's politics, despite the fact that I'm a conservative myself-- but there is a world of difference between Palin and Evita. Palin is just a soccer mom. Evita was a dictator.
GoddessofCoruscant 1 year ago
@GoddessofCoruscant Evita never had the privilege or wealth to get an education, thats the whole point of her popularity, her success gave hope to the country that they too, could become something other than peasants
8peregrint8 1 year ago
@8peregrint8 yes, but it was all a scam, and if you don't realize that than you are either blind or a fascist like she was. Evita hoodwinked the masses, and she was damn good at it. In that manner she was very smart. Argentina before the Perons was very wealthy. Today, BECAUSE of them it is a shithole. I know this because I've studied it and I have Argentine friends and what they tell me mirrors my conclusions.
GoddessofCoruscant 1 year ago
@GoddessofCoruscant go ahead and call me a facist but thats as far from the truth as you can get, go ahead and continue enabling the rich to screw you over, there is way too much brainwashing, if it were up to people like you we would still be living in caste systems and monarchies

@ShaiHuludisCool if you like that then good for you, but madonna's a pop artist, not an opera singer. and for a pop artist this is quite remarkable, especially because people (today still) think Madonna can't sing.

@PopCulture20 Have some respect for Lupone's version, because if it wasn't for her, Madonna probably would never have sung this.
ShaiHuludisCool 11 months ago
@ShaiHuludisCool Patti Lupone was not the one to write these songs so yes Madonna would have STILL got this role regardless. HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR MADONNA!!!!!
PopCulture20 11 months ago
@PopCulture20 Alright, you need to calm the fuck down. What I meant was that if Lupone hadn't made the Broadway version such a huge hit, there may have not been a movie version at all. Thus, you should respect Lupone for making Evita such a huge hit. I see no reason why I should respect Madonna.
ShaiHuludisCool 11 months ago
@ShaiHuludisCool Well you at least respect the mark Madonna has made in popular instead of acting like a JACKASS because you think the people that came before her are better.
PopCulture20 11 months ago
@PopCulture20 The only one being a jackass here is you. I don't like Madonna's style of music, nor do I care whether or not she made an impression upon popular culture, because I'm not a fan of popular culture. I like showtunes, classical music, and operatic music.
ShaiHuludisCool 11 months ago
@ShaiHuludisCool You don't have to like Madonna's music but at least respect her talent because it's no secret that people like you have always been intimidated by her
PopCulture20 11 months ago
@PopCulture20 Why should I respect the "talent" of a woman who I personally don't find very talented? And explain to me why I'm supposedly "intimidated" by her? Last time I checked, I never had any desire to go into the music business, showbusiness, or any other field that it related to her profession. In fact, the prospect of fame is very unattractive to me.

The thing about this song is that it makes out that Eva knew where Peron was being held while he was behind bars. That was not true in fact when he was in jail he got word to her to keep a very low profile. In fact both he and Eva both where fearing for their lives and she was scared to death that she would be next to be jailed...
Carpentersfan2003 2 years ago 24
@Carpentersfan2003 that's true that they both feared for their lifes but Eva did know where he was...She was told what island he (Peron) was going to be sent to she just wasn't behind a public protest to free him like the musical says.
Peadarisback 1 year ago
@Carpentersfan2003 This movie/musical isn't historically accurate by any means, and no one is implying that it is. It's just a musical very loosely based off of real people/events.
