His reaction was fake, but the actual trick was not. All of these shots were set up and there were multiple takes on each to get it right I'm sure, but the actual stunt is real. In other words the acting was just to make it appear that he can pull these stunts off on his first try every time.

That's assuming it's acting, otherwise the guy really does always get it and the guy that "insta reacts" just assumes it worked as soon as he realizes what he was aiming for.

One piece is instantaneously missing when the tape connects and draws it back, and some shadows shift. Which mean this shot took a long time to do, which makes sense, but not a long time to composite. :D

I think your confusing film making with the actual trick. I'm sure all of the shots were set up and planned out beforehand and it probably took several takes before the guy actually got it right, but the actual trick is probably legit. I mean it's not like slinging a tape measure is so out of this world that most people couldn't do it if they tried.

@Trickxareforkids True, but look very carefully. It's one thing to take multiple tries to sling the tape, catch the keys, and then retract, and then pick the shot that works. It's another to splice two shots together - the first of the tape measure reaching the keys and hooking on, and another of the keys retracting. The whole thing is set up as one continuous shot, and that's the issue at debate.

Why would it matter if there is a second shot spliced in for the retract if he managed to get it to the keys in the first place? Maybe they just like the latching of the keys in one shot and the retraction/reaction of another.

People are calling foul because of how the latch is perfect and the retract is perfect, but how they're not in the same try. It does take skill to latch, a bit less to retract, but a LOT of skill to latch and retract in one go.
