You must take in account that this recordings (Columbia) were made when Claudia Muzio was pretty much retired and her voice lacks of some clarity and have some difficult in the meza voce. After all, this performance is one of my favorits and no doubt among the best recors ever made of la mamma morta.
While I detect the slight weakness in her upper register, I don't really detect a problem.
I suspect part of the reason why some would think she sounded flat might be due to her vibrato. IMO, it's much narrower than what we're normally used to and perhaps a touch faster. Also, her vowels are tuned closer to the first formant, making them sound a bit more speech-like and thus probably making it sound flat.

No what is totally stupid is you.. Trust me.. you are stupid if you do not hear the flat singing.. if she was s soprano.. I need to hear more than Mi chiammo Mimi... which hardly tests her range. Sopranos have easy High c's this woman can't make a b flat.
No no, you are the stupid one and I will let you know why. Your statement is totally needless. If you have read the information reduxmisc gave, you would be a bit wiser.

@MariadelMonaco This was not a part of the comments when i first listened to this aria, and thanks that he added that.. because so far, no one has.. they act like this woman is IT as far as opera is concenred and I do NOT understand it.
Claudia Muzio belongs to the History of the Theater , to the History of the Musica and Singing ... she vas more modern than other Soprano at that time and Callas was wery inspired by her singing and Magda Olivero too . Her Life was very sad and difficult and she died when was only 47 - rest in peace Claudia and thanks for the love you gave around you to everybody !!!
Yes , this woman indeed has something to say, her interpretation are wonderful, but her singing above the staff is flat, and that bothers me greatly... A great voice, yes, a soprano? I cant tell based on these few performances recorded late in her careeer. The High B is flat too.
Along with Callas, the only rendition that brings out all the tragedy of this aria. Truly wonderful! On another note, the idea that Callas copied Muzio is, imo, idiotic. Callas was such on such a high artistic level than copying anyone was unnecesary. Furthermore, their interpretations, aside from both having the same feelings of sadness, are quite different.
There is nothing wrong with my English. The only problem is your insulting attitude. If you disagree with my statement then why don't you challenge it in an intelligent, respectful manner? I can only conclude that this is beyond you.
By the way, "janejones11", my first reply was not so much challenging you as simply stating the fact that your grasp, or lack, of the English language was glaring. It's you who couldn't face up to your own shortcoming "in an intelligent, respectful manner. I can only conclude that this is beyond you", isn't it?

I heard that she payed herself to Columbia to make these recordings, they had no trust in her, it was 14 years ago (her best time) that she had made records for Pathé and Edison.

When Muzio attempts to sing a low note she seems as if she had drunk bear and she eructates and her voice becames so thin on top she tends to dissapear.
thank you so much for posting these old recordings. she has so much passion and intensity - i think callas might have gotten some of her ideas from her, i hear many similarities. i am studying this aria right now, and this was so helpful. a beautiful voice - i LOVE her use of chest voice - and wonderful performance.
Agree, agree, agree. There are many times I've listened to Muzio and said, "So much for Callas' originality." I love her too, but I'm completely convinced that many of Callas' interpretations are Muzio originals.

At the person who'd commented she sounded flat,
While I detect the slight weakness in her upper register, I don't really detect a problem.

Just some conjecture.

Dear true admires of wonderful voices, who know the difference!
Muzio "La Morta" and Callas " Ebben lantona"
the rest keep on trying.

When we compare the very great voices past and present
(perhaps past), surely personal taste has the ultimate
choice. Ive yet to hear Claudia's interpretations bettered.
I have with Callas, there's certain aria's so suited to that
particular voice. Isn't the freedom of choice..defining.

Idiotas, claro.

IF YOU LOVE MUZIO, AS DO I, LISTEN TO "AH DEL MIO AMATO BEN." (DONAUDY SONG).

To Say nothing of Miss Church & the Classic FM stable of nobodies.
