i don't care if it's Joss Whedon, Sunny Rhodes, or any fan cover, this song is beautifully written, and as Summer Glau put it "gets under your skin in ways you can't imagine from a TV theme"
EVERY SINGLE TIME i heard Ballad of Serenity, i get chills down my spine. Cause to every single Browncoat out there, this one song means so much more than just some notes played on a guitar...
'Professional' theme completely ruins the atmosphere. this would of done great and kept to the spirit of firely if he added a guitar, fiddle, violin and some decent procession.
piss off onandy2 and take your boring 'professional' version with you.
the best songs are ones that can be performed with one guy, one guitar and and a pint of Guinness.
@GibouilleFR If you watch Buffy from the beginning and stick with it you'll probably love it is actually quite similar to Firefly/Serenity in a way and it gets a lot better from season 2 onwards. I love it and I thought it was shit when I just saw the odd bit of an episode I'm so glad I gave it a chance because a friend recommended it.
Anyone who can play an instrument & isn't tone deaf is a pofessional musician!!
just because they dont do it for a living or sign there life & rights to an A'hole record company doesn;t mean they're not. Joss could have released this himself with some backing instrumentation.
@spiritinthe7thsky ...I do agree with you, Spirit, but actually...Well, the word professional is defined as someone who does a trade for money, E.G. someone who does it for a living.
Serenity is my all time favorite movie and Firefly my all time favorite TV show. I love that this is done acoustically and with such a melancholy sound. Nothing like someone taking away everything you possess to show you what freedom really means. You learn pretty quick what you're willing to fight for, too. Wish they'd get together and do a movie to explain who Shepherd Book was and where he came from. Had a few ideas and often wondered how right I was. Miss them all...
Anyone know why it was cancled? i know there was a writer strike in Hollywood couple years back and alot of good shows that only was in their first season got screwed. Among them Firefly and Invasion.. anyone know if this is correct?
@MrGlennJohnsen Well...no, it wasn't because of the strike. Firefly was airing in 2002. The movie came out in 2005. Just didn't have enough viewers while it was in syndication.
It was a combination of things. Fox aired the episodes out of order (First episode aired was the 2nd episode. Last episode aired was the pilot episode. There were some other things). It wasn't in a consistent time slot. It often got pre-empted by sporting events.
I became a fan too late. Just watched the series this year. Every episode was bittersweet because in the end I knew there wasn't going to be any more of them. This show had so much potential.
@captainjimcook I think this is the case for most of us fans. We found out too late, hell, I'm not even american, they never showed it over here on Mexico! I found out only later about it! The DVD's even include the spanish track, though it was never used.
@captainjimcook as tehredmage said most of us are in the same boat. Being a browncoat is a family that transcends politics, faith and everything else. You're always welcome on the boat :)

One of the few reasons Firefly is so good, is because it was cut short. Think about it: If the Simpsons was cut back in the mid 1990's, we would still love and miss it till this day.
But NO! The Simpsons just go on and on and on. I hate that stupid show, and I swore I loved it back in the early 1990's.
i gotta disagree. personaly i still love the Simpson's. They're characters i love and they still make me laugh. A good show can last forever if they have characters you care about and Firefly did that, much like Buffy, Angel, Cheers, Married with Children and any great show. Problem with alot of us is we have short attention spans and can be fickle. There were a wealth of great stories still to be told in Firefly if it continued.
How Ironic, they can take his money, his rights to the show, but they can't take the fans from it. The ones who helped fund the film Serenity which was named so, as Fox owned Firefly.
Why do producers not recoginise a cult program and try to make money on it? I'd pay £20 a DVD for Firefly, just to have it back again.
wait, people think this was bad? I mean seriously, he sounds like any other amateur folk singer, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if he was drunk or attempting to sound drunk while recording this.
The basics of the song are down correctly. He's actually on pitch pretty well, even though his voice lacks any semblance of feeling or emotion. Mostly because he was focused on getting the notes across and was probably more watching the words than he was the sound.
dude... he's a TV SHOW PRODUCER. NOT a professional musician.
It's a good song that he wrote. And he did a pretty decent job at conveying how he wanted it to hear... which professional musicians then accomplished.
In my opinion, this is closer in tone to the lyrics and the show, and is sung with more feeling, than the final version. Joss is scarily talented at so many things... Favourited!
Listening to it again, it's still just as terrible. He's off key and off pitch, his strum pattern is horrible. God damn, his guitar isn't in tune either.
I'm sure that Whedon is better at his playing by now, but this was just terrible. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me.
yeah but with the success of the DVD launch the least they can do is give us more. All the actors would come back for sure as they all loved it and many say its the best thing they've ever done. Im sure Whedon would want to make more.
We all want them to restart it, but they probably won't. Even with the cult following Firefly is getting, we have to remember that the show was canceled in the middle of it's first season. Just because there is a legion of fans ready to eat it up, doesn't mean that they are going to make it.
Also, I think Joss said that after Dollhouse he is probably going to focus more on internet based things like Dr Horrible. What does that mean? Well, we could see a Dr Horrible-esque Firefly show-maybe.
If they ever did revive the show the fans would ready to chew it up and spit it out. The series was cut down in the middle of the season with no chance of revival so the fans deified it because they knew they would never get it. We want what we can't have. If it came back the hardcore fans would never accept it and would say that it's not as good as it was. Like with Family Guy, the revival after cancellation just wasn't as good as before. maybe he's not off key and off pitch, maybe the person who sings the final version is off key, after all, Joss did write it.
NowherManYoshi 2 years ago
You have a quite underdeveloped musical feel... everything he sings is correct; it's supposed to sound that way.
nyerguds 2 years ago
You have an underdeveloped sense of musical dynamics. Google "absolute pitch" and you will understand my frustration.
Ephemerance 2 years ago
it's called "style". Deal :P
nyerguds 2 years ago
haha, fair enough :P
Ephemerance 2 years ago
If you think that he's tone deaf, but his pitch is pretty good; what does that make you?
stonefry 2 years ago
It means you have a poor sense of musical dynamics too. Whedon was probably aware of the fact that his singing wasn't up to par.
If you had a perception of tone you'd understand why Simon from American Idol has a problem with so many singers.
Yes it's an awesome song, and Whedon was just conveying how he wanted it to be heard, but it's terrible in its self nonetheless.
