  • thinking about doing a solo for this song for my choir concert. yes?

  • He's got quite a good voice but the style he did it in kinda dragged, Sonny did it a lot better.

  • @gravygwundud I'm sure Joss felt the same way.

  • Wow, where did you get this from?

  • "take my land, take my cows, take my chickens, i don't care, i want some barbeque."

  • all i think when I hear the firefly song is Shepard Books hair up and River running from it afraid it "would get her" LOVE JOSS WHEDON

  • i don't care if it's Joss Whedon, Sunny Rhodes, or any fan cover, this song is beautifully written, and as Summer Glau put it "gets under your skin in ways you can't imagine from a TV theme"

EVERY SINGLE TIME i heard Ballad of Serenity, i get chills down my spine. Cause to every single Browncoat out there, this one song means so much more than just some notes played on a guitar...

  • 'Professional' theme completely ruins the atmosphere. this would of done great and kept to the spirit of firely if he added a guitar, fiddle, violin and some decent procession.

piss off onandy2 and take your boring 'professional' version with you.

the best songs are ones that can be performed with one guy, one guitar and and a pint of Guinness.

  • Buffy completely sucked, Serenity was HUGE

  • @GibouilleFR Hold on there. I've loved ALL of Joss' shows up to this date.

  • @GibouilleFR If you watch Buffy from the beginning and stick with it you'll probably love it is actually quite similar to Firefly/Serenity in a way and it gets a lot better from season 2 onwards. I love it and I thought it was shit when I just saw the odd bit of an episode I'm so glad I gave it a chance because a friend recommended it.

  • Anyone who can play an instrument & isn't tone deaf is a pofessional musician!!

just because they dont do it for a living or sign there life & rights to an A'hole record company doesn;t mean they're not. Joss could have released this himself with some backing instrumentation.

  • @spiritinthe7thsky ...I do agree with you, Spirit, but actually...Well, the word professional is defined as someone who does a trade for money, E.G. someone who does it for a living.

  • GIVE ME MY FIREFLY BACK!!!.....Need more than one season!

  • Serenity is my all time favorite movie and Firefly my all time favorite TV show. I love that this is done acoustically and with such a melancholy sound. Nothing like someone taking away everything you possess to show you what freedom really means. You learn pretty quick what you're willing to fight for, too. Wish they'd get together and do a movie to explain who Shepherd Book was and where he came from. Had a few ideas and often wondered how right I was. Miss them all...

  • Fox = The Alliance

  • @HotFuzz456 (from a WoW Player's perspcetive) Alliance Pigs!

  • Sigh. First Firefly, then Dollhouse...Fox is just determined to put all Joss Whedon's great work out to pasture.

  • @steelstrings87 What about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel? The world is is doomed to be deprived of Whedon's greatness...

  • Anyone know why it was cancled? i know there was a writer strike in Hollywood couple years back and alot of good shows that only was in their first season got screwed. Among them Firefly and Invasion.. anyone know if this is correct?

  • @MrGlennJohnsen You're not referring to the strike of '07-'08, are you?

  • @AnarchalPatriarch dont know

  • @MrGlennJohnsen Well...no, it wasn't because of the strike. Firefly was airing in 2002. The movie came out in 2005. Just didn't have enough viewers while it was in syndication.

  • @MrGlennJohnsen k, this was awhile ago, but...

It was a combination of things. Fox aired the episodes out of order (First episode aired was the 2nd episode. Last episode aired was the pilot episode. There were some other things). It wasn't in a consistent time slot. It often got pre-empted by sporting events.

Long story short, Fox dun goofed

  • fox should be so ashamed what a bummer

  • "I aim to misbehave."

  • I became a fan too late. Just watched the series this year. Every episode was bittersweet because in the end I knew there wasn't going to be any more of them. This show had so much potential.

  • @captainjimcook

same situation, watched all epidodes in the last 2 days, and now it's gonna take me a while to get over this epic FOX-fail :(

  • @captainjimcook I think this is the case for most of us fans. We found out too late, hell, I'm not even american, they never showed it over here on Mexico! I found out only later about it! The DVD's even include the spanish track, though it was never used.

  • @captainjimcook as tehredmage said most of us are in the same boat. Being a browncoat is a family that transcends politics, faith and everything else. You're always welcome on the boat :)

  • @avengingwatcher Beautiful.

  • @captainjimcook the two of us are in the same boat. Except I'm one year later. :(

  • they really need to start the show back up.

  • Joss Whedon is just this unstoppable fountain of creative genius. I love the music in his shows.

  • You should hear his original rendition of the Dollhouse theme, he can reach them high notes :D

  • Does anyone have that on youtube?

  • @BuckJLastard whaaaaat?! where did you hear that?! more importantly, is there a video of it that i can listen to over and over again?!!!

  • what a treat!!!!! Master Whedon of Firefly plays and sings the Ballad of Serenity........... GO JAYNE!!!!!!!!

  • I highly enjoy this.

    Fuck everyone else.

  • i gotta disagree. personaly i still love the Simpson's. They're characters i love and they still make me laugh. A good show can last forever if they have characters you care about and Firefly did that, much like Buffy, Angel, Cheers, Married with Children and any great show. Problem with alot of us is we have short attention spans and can be fickle. There were a wealth of great stories still to be told in Firefly if it continued.

  • Dude, fuck Fox.

  • I wish it came back, even if it's only direct-to-dvd... if no other options available.

  • I miss Firefly. I bless my children who gave me the boxed set. And of course I love Serenity.

  • yeah thats what fox is known for ... screwing other people ...

  • How Ironic, they can take his money, his rights to the show, but they can't take the fans from it. The ones who helped fund the film Serenity which was named so, as Fox owned Firefly.

Why do producers not recoginise a cult program and try to make money on it? I'd pay £20 a DVD for Firefly, just to have it back again.

  • "Take my show, take the name, cancel it for no reason. I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take my fans from me!"

  • @Alagosiell

    HELL EYAH WOOT WOOT

  • @Alagosiell Thumbs Up for Firefly and Joss Whedon!

  • @Alagosiell or my DVD. :)

  • FOX screwed him on this show

  • and they just screwed him over on dollhouse too.

    fuck them!

  • idc what people say, its good drunk or not

  • wait, people think this was bad? I mean seriously, he sounds like any other amateur folk singer, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if he was drunk or attempting to sound drunk while recording this.

  • Well, this wasn't bad at all, considering that he's not a singer.

  • Joss Whedon has always admitted that he's not the greatest singer, so everyone lay off please.

  • curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal

  • The basics of the song are down correctly. He's actually on pitch pretty well, even though his voice lacks any semblance of feeling or emotion. Mostly because he was focused on getting the notes across and was probably more watching the words than he was the sound.

  • dude... he's a TV SHOW PRODUCER. NOT a professional musician.

It's a good song that he wrote. And he did a pretty decent job at conveying how he wanted it to hear... which professional musicians then accomplished.

Go away and take your fail with you.

  • @oneandy2 aaaaaaaaaaa- men.

  • In my opinion, this is closer in tone to the lyrics and the show, and is sung with more feeling, than the final version. Joss is scarily talented at so many things... Favourited!

  • That's just because you're used to the Television version. On it's own, this version is fine.

  • Listening to it again, it's still just as terrible. He's off key and off pitch, his strum pattern is horrible. God damn, his guitar isn't in tune either.

I'm sure that Whedon is better at his playing by now, but this was just terrible. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

  • maybe he's not off key and off pitch, maybe the person who sings the final version is off key, after all, Joss did write it.

  • You have a quite underdeveloped musical feel... everything he sings is correct; it's supposed to sound that way.

  • You have an underdeveloped sense of musical dynamics. Google "absolute pitch" and you will understand my frustration.

  • it's called "style". Deal :P

  • haha, fair enough :P

  • If you think that he's tone deaf, but his pitch is pretty good; what does that make you?

  • It means you have a poor sense of musical dynamics too. Whedon was probably aware of the fact that his singing wasn't up to par.

If you had a perception of tone you'd understand why Simon from American Idol has a problem with so many singers.

Yes it's an awesome song, and Whedon was just conveying how he wanted it to be heard, but it's terrible in its self nonetheless.

  • I am master joss

  • I still can't believe it's been like 7 years since Firefly

  • Seriously? Seven years? Oh, my God. I never would have thought that...

  • Once a Browncoat, always a Big Damn Hero.

    BROWNCOATS UNITE!

  • I always think, "well at least they got the movie to finish it off". you know?

  • yup. i loved the movie, so i bought the dvd as soon it came out... and i had to watch it again few weeks ago...

  • this is y josh wheadon didnt sing it!

  • Hate to say it, the decision to change out the instruments was probably a good one.

probably the only gorram good decision the rutters made the whole time.

  • Joss is a beast!

  • i love joss and all. but they did well to have redone this haha

  • Let's just hope there IS a 2nd season.

  • scifi.

  • There's talk of a second season? o.o

I thought this was a one season deal.

  • nope,talk is good./

  • Well shoot me in the ass, there is a god. :D

  • BANG u git shot:P

  • think there will be a 2nd season? That would be so fing awesome :D haha

  • i hope that there will be but chanses are that it will never come back

  • not very likely since they made a movie to sorta finish the story.

  • theres a possible chance they could make the second series based on what happened before the movie

  • really????!!!!! OMG I can'T wait!!

  • yeah but with the success of the DVD launch the least they can do is give us more. All the actors would come back for sure as they all loved it and many say its the best thing they've ever done. Im sure Whedon would want to make more.

  • We all want them to restart it, but they probably won't. Even with the cult following Firefly is getting, we have to remember that the show was canceled in the middle of it's first season. Just because there is a legion of fans ready to eat it up, doesn't mean that they are going to make it.

Also, I think Joss said that after Dollhouse he is probably going to focus more on internet based things like Dr Horrible. What does that mean? Well, we could see a Dr Horrible-esque Firefly show-maybe.

  • If they ever did revive the show the fans would ready to chew it up and spit it out. The series was cut down in the middle of the season with no chance of revival so the fans deified it because they knew they would never get it. We want what we can't have. If it came back the hardcore fans would never accept it and would say that it's not as good as it was. Like with Family Guy, the revival after cancellation just wasn't as good as before. The show is best left in nostalgia's warm embrace.

  • either version works well... kinda prefer the joss one just because he wrote it and what not but i like the sonny rhodes one alot also.

  • this guy sounds pretty good

  • I watched the special features before I finished watching the episodes, and found that the guy who plays the part of the Shepherd has such an annoying laugh that I didn't like him for the rest of the episodes.

  • this song is on stargate atlantis theme song here and boy, its sound kinda weird but otherwise good!

  • Woot! Knowing I can play this song nearly as good as Whedon makes me feel good.

  • viva la Browncoats

  • His episode of The Office airs next week!

  • Push the button! I cant believe that Wonderwoman and Bionic Woman got past Joss....but Ill bet they exist because of him.

  • yeah joss, keep creating amazing TV shows, don't start singing....

  • this song always makes me depressed cause i know firefly's never comin back

  • there is no end to joss' genius-ness

  • bad or not, it shows the integrity and Passion of the writer and creator of the art. rock on joss!!!

  • it's Joss Whedon SINGING!!! Who cares what it sounds like he's SINGING!!! (i hav to go back to my Joss worship now) lol

  • Joss Whedon =/= Sonny Rhodes, of course it's not gonna sound good to you.
