This is beautiful, incredibly so. It's disturbing, gross and slightly melancholic roots just...somehow ADD instead of detracting. The simple way she gets her message across, yet exquisitely complicated, the way she captures the human essence...*sigh* I love Regina Spektor
why dont people watch her that much because i mean only 58,207 people watched this and probably the majority of them are most likly people who come back and watch it 5 times a day.
The idea behind the song is an old urban legend passed between the single male community: it's told that if you hold your breath underwater while you masturbate, your orgasm will be twice as good. Pretty much the same concept behind auto-erotic asphyxiation. That's why there's laughter about the lake, and why it's like porridge. Genius dies. The "genius next door" being what dudes called the guy that figured it out.
Incidentally, he goes too far and drowns in the middle of the lake. Kinda gross
@BizarreJellyChat While gross, there is something breathtakingly beautiful about dying that way. Sexual gratification, especially without a partner, is such a vulnerable state of mind. It reminds me of how the French word for orgasm is "la petite-mort" or literally "the little death". The hint at sexuality makes this so much more unique and devastating.
This song is absolutely beautiful. It's so angelic and peaceful. I can't get enough of her voice and her piano playing. *listening to it for the hundred-and-fifth time*
-Sigh- I'm pretty much in heaven. (That would make sense, seeing as how Regina Spektor is an angel, now wouldn't it?)
@DrManceni They do, you just have to re-read the lyrics a few times and think over what the song means to you. Like when I listen to this song I think that the "genius" was probably a kid everyone made fun of and he eventually committed to suicide by drowning himself in the lake or "porridge" and even though he's gone, life still went on without him hence the "garbagemen emptying dumpster, ect.". I have heard many interpretations , it depends on the listener and what they think ^_^
I recently went on a 4 hour car ride with my step-brother. We listened to Regina nearly the whole way. We hardly spoke aloud, but we made a connection. Regina made us a lot closer as siblings. Thx Regina :) my step-brother is really cool I now see.
i'm not sure if i'm correct, but it sounds like the genius commits suicide in the lake. it is his secret... in the chorus it's like she's telling him to hold in his breath until he comes back out of the water in full. instead, i guess he lets it go and dies. she thinks he is a foolish child.
How is this song not more famous?! An all-time favorite....

The genius doesn't kill himself; he decides not to. The main message of the song for me is "Think it through" whatever it is.

There needs to be a music video. I'm sooo curious as to what her incredible creativity would perceive a video representation as.
