I had host. (N6688846993) I'm not sure if there is a way to get the mods to work without host. There probably is but I never knew how. When I didn't get host the stickies still came out and the mods were still there but they didn't have any damage effect at all. So they basically blew up but wouldn't hurt anyone and were just a huge distraction.
