  • the new Mrs De Winter is supposed to be plain-looking. joan fontaine is quite pretty! this is sooooo different from the book!!

  • @AlliyaandRaza It doesn't say in the book that she is plain-looking, but rather that she thinks she is plain. That is quite different. It is more that she is modest and not flashy in her beauty like Rebecca was. She is supposed to be a pretty, young girl - exactly like Joan Fontaine!

  • "I am Mrs De Winter now". Like a boss.

  • Hey Sara! Not sure if u'll even see this comment but I hope so :) I hope you and the little eskimo are comfortable there, watching Rebecca? I miss you. You're the sweetest girl alive :)

  • New Mrs de Winter is always crying. needs to grow a pair.

  • Mrs Danvers is my favourite- true brilliance :)

  • She looks like Scarlett O'Hara in that dress and hat!

  • Def a Scarlett O'Hara dress.

  • I knew Mrs. Danvers had set her up with that portrait. This film and Dragonwyk bear a striking resemblance; or perhaps it is just the genre.

  • Such a silly scene. Rebecca was the most stylish, dark, beautiful creature everyone ever saw and here's the mouse compared to her. Please, not even is she was wearing a black wig could she come close to Rebecca.

  • am I the only one who actually likes Mrs Danvers? She may be mad, but she does it so ... elegantly.

  • @hiatusinc I like her as well, her obsession is what makes her such an enjoyable character. She is the character you love to hate like cruella deville.

  • OMG HOW EVIL IS MRS DANVERRRSSSS

  • freeze it at 0:51, so freaky...Mrs. Danvers was one of those people who knew how to pick out and then exploit your weaknesses; She made me sick. She was an obsessive, cunning and sadistic psycho.

  • LISTEN TO THE SEA....SO SOOTHING

    CREEEEPYYY 0.0

  • Joan Fontaine is hot.

  • Awww shit not this scene

  • Danvers = PSYCHO

  • Does anyone else think that Selznick might have re-used that hat? It looks exactly like the straw hat with green ribbon that Scarlett O Hara wore throughout the first half of Gone with the Wind, including the fleeing scenes in Atlanta. It would have been an economical choice, don't you think?

  • Mrs. Davers looked proud of her afterwards.

  • Beautiful moment-- 8:30 In her Fancy Dress, walks down the stairs in eager anticipation of the surprise she is about to deliver. You can even see it on her face. In the book, at this moment, she had a member of the band announce her presence as "Ms. Caroline DeWinter!" -- also-- she changed into a blue dress and stayed the whole night at the ball.. miserable and unspoken to maxim. It was to be the happiest night, their official engagement party. Quickly turned into misery.

  • I love the part when she finally tripps out .. 0.05

"look you can see my hand through it.."... the room was just about the last straw to crush her insecurities

  • I've been thinking

Well what do you want to do that for... lol how can his treating her like a kid be so darn cute?

  • the letter R is the creepiest! and The Danvers Woman!

  • I guarantee I would love to bend Mrs.Danvers over and nail her just in badness.

  • Comment removed

  • Mrs. Danvers....who the hell married her!?

  • That Danvers lady makes this to ghost movie

  • I imagine Rebecca looking like Vivien Leigh.

  • in the book.... the fancy dress ball was amazingly painful to witness and you were so SAD for her. .....................................She sure did look beautiful in that dress though.

  • I. WANT. MAX. HAR. HARRR.

  • why doesn't Maxium share a bedroom with his wife?

  • @luname82 back then...wealthy couples slept in separate rooms unless they were going to have sex...

  • @LeBookworm ooohhh.i see! thanks.

  • Mrs Danvers is a little reminiscent of Prof Severus Snape, no?

  • Danvers needed to be fired earlier..

  • my god. she is so freakin naive! Put yourself together, girl!!!

  • Oh, she gave them the surprise of their lives alright! The shock of their loves most likely!

  • Humph! She had deliberately set her up!!

  • You can see how afraid and scared she is!! She can never escape the spiritual spectral influence of Rebecca!!! It is incredible how a mere woman who is dead can have a lot of influence in the world of the living.

  • @Scoutpower1 She was not a mere woman, she was a terribly strong person and also very sick and demented. After she told Maixim the truth about eherself he was so appalled he never quite recovered.

  • maxim should have gotten therapy before getting involved with another woman lol

  • 0:05 - 0:08 :D!

  • I hope she's chasing ms. Danvers in the room to smack her around for tricking her.. Ugh!!

  • This would have been better if we saw glimpses of what Rebecca looked like; as a ghost or something, and maybe haunted their home! : )

  • Yeah ever see SIngle White Female? That crazy nut probably killed the 1st wife out of obsession... what a sick old lady! how cruel!

  • Yeah ever see SIngle White Female? That crazy nut probably killed her out of obsession... what a sick old lady! how cruel!

  • hitch's movies were always ahead of their time. the special features on the dvd commentary say mrs. danvers and rebecca were lovers. rebecca was bi and sex crazed - she even had sex with her cousin played by george sanders

I used to work at jobs with a couple of double-crossers like mrs danvers lol i know the type

  • hitch's movies were always ahead of their time. the special features on the dvd commentary say mrs. danvers and rebecca were lovers. rebecca was bi and sex crazed - she even had sex with her cousin played by george sanders

  • What was wrong with what she was wearing?

  • @fusock She was wearing the same costume that Rebecca had worn at the previous year's ball. That's why Beatrice gasped, "Rebecca! Oh!" Mrs. de Winter told Maxim that she was going to give him the surprise of her life, and he thought she dressed like Rebecca to shock him. Of course, it was Mrs. Danvers who deliberately suggested the dress, knowing that Mrs. de Winter wearing it would provoke a reaction and humiliate her.

  • this maid is gaga

  • 2:37-2:40 about bloody time

  • @ChildOfTheFlower You got that right.

  • Danvers, such a psychopath.

  • "i've been thinking.."

"why on on earth would you want to do that for?"

    LOL!

  • i think that mrs danvers was gay and loved rebecca. anybody else thnk that?

  • "And a lot of young people will come up from london and turn the house into a nightclub!" RAAAAVE!!! Skins Party!

  • wow the new Mrs. De Winter is so annoying! It's like she has no freaking clue about anything...total airhead!

  • 9:07-9:10 Eyeroll + Facepalm

  • could that crazy lady have killed Rebecca...

  • @sulivel Nope.

  • @sulivel if you read the book, she is killed, but not by Mrs Danvers

  • I don't understand these people; if you don't enjoy then why watch it in the first place then?

Joan Fontaine is an absolutely beautiful woman.

  • Danver's is a little trouble maker

  • "look... you can see my hand!"

good job, mrs. danvers! next, let's teach you how to recite your abc's and learn your colors!

  • She looked so beautiful! That evil Mrs. Danvers!!! Poor Mrs. De Winter! She was so happy!

  • At last she's the Lady of the House!

  • haha i love how Beatrice refers to Mrs. De Winter as "the child"

  • I was cringing so hard when she came down the stairs....

  • @Deanybob101 I know! I had such an awful feeling as soon as Mrs. Danvers suggested the idea

  • "I'm Mrs DeWinters now"!

  • He really is a pig, note how he doesn't say, you could never embaress me. He more then Danvers made her feel unworthy.

  • why oh why would she take her advice.... as soon as psycho denvers suggested it, I knew it would be the same dress as rebecca T_T

  • Ms. Danvers is played by the late Judith Anderson who was also cast in 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' along with Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman and Burl Ives. A superb actress..her roles were always so different and she yet she always played her roles very, very well. She's I think what one would call a 'character actress'. I'm not sure but I loved her acting....

  • @9876543217303 She was mostly a stage actress, one of the best in her time.

  • Mrs. Danvers is an extremely ill individual, but sadly Mrs. Du Winter doesn't have the self confidence of maturity to do away with someone who is obviously so intertwined with the workings of Manderley. This actress who played Mrs. Danvers was superb...

  • "Listen to it. Listen to the sea." "Yeah. That's pretty neat." "So soothing. Listen." "Ok, well, thanks for showing me arou--" "Listen to it. Stay and listen. You look tired. So soothing." "Can you maybe take a step or two back so that our eyeballs aren't touching?" "I keep Mrs. DeWinter's underwear right over here. I like to touch it." "O...kay..." "Feel it on your skin." "I have to go." "So soft..." "Real good then. Okay. Carry on with your... duties... Thank--" "Spank me." "G'bye."
  • I'm laughing so hard at your comment, I have tears

  • @thighmister

You have me practically on the floor with this!!

  • Mrs.Danvers isn't a kesbian & I don't understand why people would think that. She's clearly a psychopath.

  • Danvers is creeepy.. wow, can't believe she didn't fire her in the beginning.

  • I love the piece of music when Mrs de Winter asks to have the costume ball. Does anyone know what it is?

  • That poor girl needs someone to stick up for her. Maxim sure fails in that regard. Maybe she could get a really big dog.

  • didnt the scene where everyone stares have like 100 people in the book??

  • No, there were only Frank Crawley, Maxim, Beatrice and Giles

  • Ah - I can't stand moments like that.

  • "_I_ am Mrs. De Winter now!" One of the most satisfying lines in movie history.

  • that is so true, and i love how Denvers looks like she's gonna have a nervous breakdown ; )

  • @flipsyboy why dont you get a dose of modern life

  • @DrSoloDolo It's people like you that they make movies like I Hate Valentine's Day for.

  • Its even better because Danvers doesn't blink!

I think Vivien Leigh actually did a screen test for the part, I saw it here on youtube a while ago.

  • I can imagine Vivien Leigh as Rebecca de Winter in this costume!

  • Me too.. she should have had a part in this movie.. a little ticked that Vivien didn't get a part.

  • @nineczek Mrs deW is supposed to be plain-looking, even homely. Fontaine wasn't, and Leigh certainly not. In the '40's an actress would never wear makeup that made her look homely. We're more naturalistic now.

  • @foxyzzzzz Vivien Leigh wanted to play the part but was told she was too beautiful (Rebecca, the unseen force, had to be the focus for beauty) and they needed someone not quite so striking, hence Joan Fontaine.

  • @TheSkylur44true, vivien leigh is striking. but good thing they didnt choose her, i prefer joan fontaine, more innocent, purely beautiful. perfect for the role!

  • @zenith0000006 They said she was too beautiful for the part, which is true; not that Joan Fontaine is not, but her looks aren't as dramatic as Leigh's, so the only movie Viven Leigh and Olivier wound up doing together was That Hamilton Woman, which is fabulous.

  • @TheSkylur44 thanks think i'll search for that, i'm starting to like how oliver speak!

  • this girl needs to hold herself together!

  • That costume is gorgeous! She looks so beautiful that it's hard for me to imagine Rebecca looking any better.

  • Danvers obession with the late Mrs. de Winter is creepy. "Listen to the sea." Creepy....

  • OMG! That Danvers lady is freakin' crazy...she's a psycho....she's very creepy.

  • @ready101okay "she's a psycho" - that's Alfred Hitchcock for you. The scene where Danvers appears silhouetted against the curtains is very reminiscent of Psycho. I wouldn't be surprised if he used her character as inspiration.

  • My favourite film <3

What is Beatrice dressed up as?? I'm doing an essay on costume for film studies.

  • I think she´s dressed up as a valkyrie from the german mitology.

  • in the book, she's supposed to be an Arabian woman i think

  • no her husband is an arabian man

  • @Gracegirl127 no, that was beatrice

  • i cant hardly watch her go down in her costume! i feel for her!

  • Ms. Danvers seriously needs to get her panties out of a bundle.

She annoys the crap outta me!

    Haha.

    I love this movie/book though (:

  • 2:41 is awesome

  • haha i know!

  • ms danvers has to be a lesbian. no one is that obsessed

  • well critics have said that homo-erotic elements seem to come out in the way mrs danvers talks about rebecca so you wouldnt be wrong there

  • "I am Mrs de Winter now!"

  • omg...the housekeeper is so obsessed with the first wife, it's too creepy. She's like admiring all her stuff and touching it. ALSO...why is everything monogrammed?? The husband should of gotten rid of it all! geezzz poor girl. Everything's just too weird for her.

  • and not just all her stuff....her underwear and her negligee. yick.

  • Danvers is a Beast!! Grrrrr I hate her!!

  • I love the music that begins to play at 0:12, it really marks the climax of the scene. Also love how she runs to hug him at 3:07. All of of their hugs are so sweet, the ones at 4:20 and 4:33-35 are my favorites, they look so cute in those moments... I simply love that scene.

  • mrs danvers scares the freak out of me XD

  • i mean mrs danvers

  • what a prize cow!

  • There's so much excess in this room. But i like it all the same. Wish i had that dresser for my clothes.

This poor woman - living in a house that can't move into the future.

  • Creepy Mrs. Danvers...

  • "What's the idea? Adam and Eve?" Gosh, that's hilarious.

  • She looks a lot like Anna Paquim.

  • she sounds odd when she says "i am mrs de winter now"

  • Yeah she sounds slightly evil. I am Mrs de Winter now!! mwha ha ha...

  • "I'm mrs DeWinter now"

    Yeeeey!! Well done)))

  • The dress is so beautiful :) Danvers is so mean...

  • love it so far

  • I used to work with the male version of Mrs. Danvers :(

  • mrs. danver is obessed! holy smokes...

  • That BIETCH!!

  • In the book the "I am Mrs De Winter now" assetiveness comes after she is sure Max never loved Rebecca and does love her. I don't think it works so well the way they have done it here - I mean, there's no real reason for her to have suddenly gained confidence

  • Complete agreement. She's supposed to be more afraid and disturbed by Danvers at this point. The turning point is, as you pointed out, when she discovers what Rebecca truly was.

  • also she sounds really weird when she said "I am Mrs. DeWinter now"

  • Most certainly. David O. Selznick actually demanded that some of the dialogue be re-recorded because was dissatisfied. However, it was often done without consideration for the continuity of the scene. This is one of those moments.

  • You're absolutely right. Her suddenly growing a backbone at this point seemed completely inappropriate.

  • i don't know about that... remember she had to work for the mean lady that hired her as a paid companion in the begining of the story. THAT woman had to pay someone to put up with her -lol! so she had it up to her neck with all these mrs. danvers-freaks in her life. so yea she decided to take control. one doesnt always need a man's love to give one confidence. we as humans can get strength from an overall life experience.

  • Jane Eyre is another book that shows a woman gaining independence without a man helping her. She leaves Mr. Rochester to see if she can learn to stand on her own two feet.

  • i looooove that book!

  • Eyre left Rochester because he already had a wife and she had character and principles. Her thinking is, "How long until he gets tired of me as well?" He wants him to truly value her and prove herself in the world. She was very wise, though she almost lost him.

  • 'i am mrs. de winter now' yay for the backbone

  • That girl fixing Joan's dress looks like the mini version of her!

  • I love the charakter of Mrs Danvers xD Don`t know why maybe because of the Rebecca Musical but I think Mrs. Danvers is the best charakter in Rebecca

  • Susan portrays Mrs Danvers in the musical like no other will do, ever!

  • I agree with you! I think we're the only ones who like her XD

  • I rly like that dress..does anyone know from what century it is?

  • Comment removed

  • I always can't believe how mrs de Winter could be so naive and believe that old evil Danvers want really help her with the costume...

  • I know! it makes me frustrated that she gets creep out whenever she is with her and she still believe what the servant tells her.

  • what do the words say at 2:13? "Rebecca, I'll be there and ??????

  • And how (i think)

  • "Rebecca I'll be there...and how!"

  • What does he mean by and how?

  • Meaning, definitely. Just an expression.

  • Thanks =]

  • this movie has a subliminal lesbian angle. REBBECA most likey bisexual. and MRS. DANVERS was in love with her...

  • bisexual? I don't think she was! And Mrs Danvers was simply insane!

  • YES. REMEMBER MAXIM TELLING HIS NEW WIFE A BOUT REBECCA AND "things that he will never tell a living soul"- WHAT DO YOU THINK HE WAS REFERRING TOO? AND REBECCA WAS FRIENDS WITH MRS DANVERS LONG BEFORE SHE BROUGHT HER TO MANDALAY.- THEY MET A LESBIAN BAR IN 1932. THEY'VE BEEN FREINDS EVER SINCE. NOT A TRUE REALTIONSHIP JUST "CLOSE BUDS" AND SHE LET MRS. DANVERS SEE HER NAKED ALOT TOO. BEFORE SHE WENT TO BED AND SLIPPED INTO HER PRETTY SEE THRU NIGHTGOWN.HAHA

  • maybe u r right, I rely exclusively on the film, I haven't read the book...anyways, nobody is perfect!

  • lol, i was kidding about them meeting in a lesbian bar in 1932. i don't know how they met. never read the book either.

  • lol...let's hope they were not!:-)

  • why? who cares if they were lesbians. but if they were it certianly gives the story a whole new dimension. but in the end it is irrelevant. REBECCA was evil. and so was MRS. DANVERS. they both die horribly in the end as it should be. karma baby...

  • not in the book. mrs danvers doesnt die.

  • what

    hahahahahahahaha

    thats crazy

  • I agree!! When I looked up this movie (I had no idea what it was about and had never heard of it before) that was in the tagline and in the summary or whatever it said there would be secrets...I definitely think she was in love with Rebecca. She is crazy, though!!! =[

  • God please, can someone slap Maxim ?

  • i don't understand why this comment get's so many thumbs down, Maxim definitely needs a slap
