  • MAN! YOU ARE GOOD! You should give your day job and start an African band.... You are really good at what you do.

  • @alkisaka hello sir how long have been you playing and how to start playing as the beginner? I'm here in SA and very interested in learning the soukos would you pleaase give an advise.

  • @Andreas5616 Been playing for 38 years...Start with the basics.i.e. rhythm Demo #5 Start listening to some of the masters from the past...and then also those in the present..i.e. Franco (Luambo Makiadi, Dr. Nico etc) Papa Wemba and so on..pick out a song you like and then start with a section you think can tackle..if you are drawn to the solo/lead guitar then pick a lead guitar section if it's rhythm then go start with the rhythm I would recommend starting with mastering the basic rhythm style

  • Alan I am in awe, it reminds me of when we were kids. Truly nice stuff.

  • Thank you so much for the wealth of info on your videos! They have really helped out!

Also, are you using the stock pickups? they sound great :)

  • i am really looking for soukous for the ukulele.... i think the way that you broke it down can help me. ill just transpose it from the guitar. do you know of any other web sites that might help??

  • @ukeaddictify Wow ...that is interesting Soukous on the Ukelele..all you would have to do is get a handle on the picking rhythm...and try G //// C // D // chord progression..

For instance the Mi compose demo # 3 would probably be a start...

Let me know how it goes..

  • Love it...i want to improve his style with my guitar..is not so easy like its seems to be...this guy sounds with an amazing groove...

  • man thats awsome what scales you use for all that?! i play guitar are thier any other influences i could look up who would help me out, anyone you would recomend to listen too!!! thanks man your awosme. also are thier like band who play your style, so i could study thier style through tabs. what i saw is AMAZING i want more!

  • It's major scale or major pentatonic..almost always..

    The cord procession is I-IV-V..

    No minor chords used..

So in the key of A you use A-D-E chords...learn them in many different positions...

Arpegiate them on your playing and also play A major scale licks.

Ideally you need 2 guitarists -if not 3- for this music

    Cheers

  • and listen to Heartbeat, Go! and Marimba Jive

    G

  • never mind boss, i have seen the answer to my qustion pasted 8 moons ago....The guitar is a fender classic American Stratocaster.

The software I am using is Cubase LE (Light version) from Steinberg. My input interface is a Tascam (IO) that gives you the ability to connect a guitar or Mic to your laptop computer.

I have access to Protools as well...but for quick little things Cubase works just fine...unless of course there is some' new.

Love and respect for the good work

  • alkisaka,

can you tell me the son structure to soukous? I am a young man from kinchasa who just started a soukous band. I am having a hard time structing the song! Typical sing is verse, chorus, verse, chorus and so on but for soukous it seems to be chorus(3 or 4), Verse, Chorus 3 times am I right? please let me know

  • Typically in Soukous you will have the Rhumba or verse section that may have 1 or two different turnaround breaks..Then you have the dance section or Sebene. some times there is a pre sebene or pre-chorus section. Some songs are just one long Sebene with some breaks.

  • is there a video for the e-bass?

  • Hey Alisaka. What brand and model of guitar is that? and What software you use for your composition? I have got acoustic at the moment but will like to upgrade to Electric because its good for Soukous jamming.

    Thanks...

    Asante Sana

  • Are you Ugandan? Just wondering.

  • c'est un trés bon musicien

  • Yeah, as far as I can tell, from having transcribed it, the guitar tuning is the standard EADGBE, but the entire guitar is about a quarter step sharp. Alan, is that something you did on purpose? I've heard somewhere that Soukous guitarists tune sharp for the brighter tone, but I don't know if this is true.

  • very nice yeah scotttshuster i need that dvd.

but i swear your tuning is not ebgdae i dno.

  • Very, very nice Alan. Please do let us know when the instructional DVD will be available. I have been in love with hypnotic Soukous playing since I was in Peace Corps a bunch of years ago. The stuff is wildly popular throughout Africa. If it doesn't make you move there must be something wrong with you.

  • That's what I've been looking for, for ages! Real african guitar playing. Thank you very much, man!

  • Wow,nice stuff,Alan,Esako!

  • Read Alan's comments on soukous at our internet discussion group: Go to tribe-dot-net...and once you get there search for "soukousguitar" -- you'll learn all about playing in this style. Hey: Maybe you will want to join the discussion - !!

  • omigod-great instructional video and demonstration, alan - not to mention a sweet and lovely little composition.
