At the risk of being consigned to the hottest place in hell (directly next to Ethel Gumm) may I please say just a word on Ethel's behalf? I have said many times (out here) that Judy Garland was the greatest entertainer of the 20th Century. It's been well documented that in the 1940's(at the first sign of Judy's troubles) mama Ethel went to Louis Mayer and begged him to let Judy out of her MGM contract, so that Judy might return to the stage (and the relative peace she had known). No, said MGM!
Lorna Luft never even KNEW her grandmother, Judy's mother. In fact Ethel Gumm never even SAW Lorna Luft; Judy refused to let Ethel see her. All Lorna Luft knows about Ethel Gumm is what Judy told her. And Judy lied about her mother for her entire life. Ethel, although not perfect, WAS on Judy's side. Lorna Luft is just spewing Judy's bullshit about her mother. She's as deluded as any other Judy fan.
@sarakat76 I happen to know quite a bit about Judy Garland. Her life has been well-documented. And the fact is that Judy Garland's mother did NOT make her a drug addict and was not nearly as bad as Judy made her out to be. Judy needed people to blame for her own problems. She blamed Louis B. Mayer, Sid Luft and her mother, among others. But especially her mother. Her mother was a very convenient scapegoat. Judy is not to be believed when it comes to her mother. She told a lot of lies about her.
@cynthiacher 1- me too I read about Judy, everyone says that blame the mother and MGM. Judy was 15 years old, did not take the pills only have given them to him. The Judy's fault is not stopping by adult. She was looking for love, but many have only used. like her mother! For me Judy was sincere. But in the end only Judy and her mother know the truth!
@cynthiacher 2 watch the interview of Margaret O' Brien, she told that the MGM Judy's child were working at night, before the arrival of the laws to protect children. Judy said the truth! that the facts show!
Hey heeter71 I could not say it better what a body of work she gave and still people pick at her.Its just this messed up world.GOD took her.How she died is how she died and if she could say anything about her death I think that would be what she would say!!!RIP I love now and forever Love Barbara...
if you look at her top row of teeth she has the same structure of teeth as judy. also she has her quick sense of humor. i think of judy's children, she is definately my fav...not to say that i dont like any of her other children
This is not a slight to Lorna, but I think she favors Ethel more than anyone. And sorry to say this also, but if it weren't for this so-called "monster" named, Ethel Gumm, we would not be writing these comments today. Think about that...
I don't think Judy's life was tragic, rather she was tragically let down, abandoned, used; etc. She always appears very happy on her television series, etc...
lorna is so pretty, when she was younger she looks a lot like judy and in some pictures now she definatly does look like her mom. I feel so bad, Lorna seemed to really resent her grandmother during this
I wasn't talking about Lorna. I was talking about her daughter. There is a picture in her book of her daughter as a young girl holding a picture of Judy as a young girl. They look very alike
I agree with Lorna, it's so tiresome the way so many people focus on the tragic aspects of Judy's life. She's left behind such an amazing and beautiful body of work with the power to transform one's very soul, not to mention plenty of evidence that she was a fun-loving, affectionate person who lived life to the fullest. Still you keep hearing: "So sad how MGM and her mom ruined her life..." I have yet to hear of anyone who's lived a perfect happy life completely free of any misery or sadness.
i think lorna daughter looks like her when she was younger, judy adroes and loves her children so much judy is a sweet human being
