This is beautiful playing. There has recently been posted a recording of this same piece by Olga Samaroff here on YT. I have been listening to both versions for the past two days - really a delight. Has Smith also recorded the Sonata of Griffes? I have heard it is a riveting composition...
I really like Mr. Smith's approach to this piece and the lontano aural quality of the recording. It really allows for a sense of sentimental melancholy to be felt which to me always seems to permeate Griffes' work.
There are a number of professional Griffes recordings (Michael Lewin, I'm talking to ya son) that suffer from IMO either inappropriate mic placement, arid acoustics or overly literal interpretations. And I simply will not have them.
Superlative recording and a nice tribute to its composer. Seems to capture the mood of an era; the seascapes are posed exactly at highly dramatic positions in the music; clear and very convincing, thanks.
Actually, the piano from the recording may be a Steinway but the audio is from a brioso cd that Joseph made a few years ago, we found that my microphone was not good so I tailored the video to fit the older recording.

Absolutely beautifully played - is that a steinway? I play on them a lot and I'm pretty sure it is - they really are the best!
Such a nice piece of music.
