Wow, people are murdering each other over which version is better. Here's my view on it.

Stanley Kubrick's version is much more of a mental exercise with great symbolism and a disorienting feel, and I personally thought scarier than the miniseries version. It's fun to analyze. But the miniseries had more story and character depth. I felt more for the characters in the miniseries, especially Weber's Jack Torrance. Though Jack was more intense and scarier as the over the edge Jack.

I like both.

Jack Nicholson did ok, I just think Steven Weber fit the character better than Jack did.

For me is this Steven Weber version much better than 1980 original with Jack Nicholson. The role of wife and his son are in Kubrick version in shade of main actor and very unexpressive and indifferent. I also find Jack exaggerated and therefore looks little artificial...

Everybody has their own opinion, and you should respect that. If you don't like the mini series that's fine, but don't write mean comments to other people. Respect each other. I like both versions and Jack Nicholson was great in The Shining, but Steven Weber did a good job too.

Really? I love Danny Elfman, and I also love Tim Burton. They make a great team in all of their movies. Tim is an awsome director and Danny compose amazing music :)

I like all kind of different music, but I mostly listen to rock, hardrock and bands from the 80s. Some of my favourite bands are Nirvana, 3 Doors Down, Voltaire, Papa Roach, Within Temptation and David Bowie :)

Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, Deftones, Weezer, Prodigy, Jeff Buckley, Joy Division, The Hives.. so many more. But listen to these guys the most I think :) Alot of people are in your area are into alternative music right? I've been to Norway, loved the people there. So different than over here in Holland. Not sure if Sweden is a bit the same. Oh, and they have the most beautiful girls of the world there, truth :p

i agree. this version is true to the book, but some of the acting is enough to make me want to hurt a small child. preferably the one that raped the role of danny in this movie. this version needs to be redone, but this time with an entire cast of real actors. and fuck kubrick. if he had kept the story closer to the book, it would have been perfect.

Well you have a good point at some parts, but I think the actors did a pretty good job, especially Steven Weber. But if Kubrick had made his movie more like the book, it had been so much better. Atleast did Jack Nicholson a great peforming.

Well that's your opinion, but the miniserie is more truthful to the book. I liked Kubrick's version too and Jack Nicholson was great as Jack Torrance. But I like Steven Weber more :)

The Kubrick version, compared to this one as a stand alone entity and piece of cinematic art work, completely blows any "made for TV" version out of the water, regardless of which one is more "true to the book." The pacing, film work, subliminal onslaught, and tension of the Kubrick version is unrivaled.

I have to disagree with you. I think Kubrick version is poor directed and steals the plot of the book, that's why Stephen King hated that version, because you can't say that you wanna make a book-movie adaptation and make the movie completely different of the book. Besaids, the acting sucks, Nicholson is a great actor, but in the shining sucks, Shelley Duvall.... SUCKS too.

Ahh, but what about the camera work? The wide angle lenses? The long, extended, rolling, unbroken shots? The subliminal color messages? I think people that prefer the TV version just don't have the capacity to -see- the finer points of directing and cinema.

The original is a good movie, bt it's completely overrated. Shelley Duvall is one of the worst actress ever, and Jack Nicholson is acting all the movie like a psychopath. Steven Weber is WAY better than Nicholson in that role.

I know, this sucks... there is a lot of underrated movies just like that Miniseries (6/10 IMbD), Cold Creek Manor (4'7/10 IMbD), Event Horizon (6/10 IMbD) or Jason Takes Manhattan (3'6/10 IMbD). For example i hate "The Village". If that movie hasn't been directed by Shyamalan everyone will says that it's a piece of crap. If The Shining hasn't been directed by Kubrick, everyone will says that "Miniseries" is better.

Yes, The Shining Miniseries music is really awesome. It fits the film perfectly. The Original Shining has NO music, only has the 'Freaky-Creeky' screams of Shelley Duvall. I'm Spanish, i've only saw this movie in Spanish, and Shelley Duvall character acts like a completely dumb and talks like a retarded... i suppose that it's only a bad translation to spanish... anyway, The Miniseries has an AMAZING translation to spanish. MINISERIES RULES!!

I understand what you mean, but the mini series is more faithful to the book than Kubrick's version. Stephen King did write the screenplay to the mini series. But Kubrick did a very interesting interpretation of the book and made it to his own idea and movie.
