Hahaha! I like your style TC..."forget 'bout it"! I think my dad was holding out on me or maybe he was trying to teach me a valuable lesson called manual labor.
27 tonn?? we got a log splitter who splitts in to 6 parts at the time and it only pushing 7 tonns who has proven to be more then enough for splitting hard wood + that it is 100 times fater then that one hehe
I have lower back trouble if i work too hard lifting and splitting with an axe never really hurt me its the moving of heavy logs and the dern bending. But i got me a 6ton electric log splitter and boy does it save my back and it will cut through joinst and wild grains. Thanks excelent video. If i needed a bigger gas splitter i would want one like yours. But my 6ton is plenty powerfull enough to do whatever i need right now.
I can split wood for an hour by hand. You have to get into the 'groove' and sometimes it's difficult to get to that point. I've used a big hydraulic splitter too. If I owned one I'd use it but it's almost easier to split by hand than to go through the trouble of renting--unless of course you chance on some "mystery" wood that's impervious to the heaviest blow and will not split!!
That's when you start thinking and looking at You-Tube vids of hydraulic splitters....
@junkman661 Vote down if you can split wood with an axe non-stop for over an hour. Remember, the machine never stops, but humans tire. Oh, and vote down if you can't split knotty wood easily with an axe. The machine yawns when it cuts through those links.
@shadowhunter45s Dear Mr. Obvious: Thanks for your comment. But you forgot a caveat: Talk to any orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist. The cartilage, a flexible connective tissue found between bone joints, and they'll tell you that it wears out too from use.
@AsktheBuilder Yes you are correct but Ive been splitting wood for nearly 60 years now and my my arms/tendons are not worn out . Your Body is made for doing tasks over and over agian. Thats like saying buy a battery powerd wheel chair because you dont want to wear out your legs. Id rather get the exercise.
@shadowhunter45s Thanks! Remember, I'm not disagreeing with you. I just want everyone to understand that body parts wear out as well. And as you get older, it takes much longer to heal. At some point an orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist will add to our comments here. She / he will talk about wear on the joints. But I'm a huge believer in exercise. You should be thankful you can still split wood at your age. I can still do it and I'm not too far behind you.
@MrStrictlyStock Yes. It works great on oak or any hardwood. As I've said time and time and time again in other comments here, it's SLOW. Some people can't swing a maul, but they can push the lever back and forth. That's what this tool is for.
@AsktheBuilder I've split wood with a 3 1/2 double bit for an hour.. And yes, I split knotty pine all the time, cords of the stuff. Just split with an axe from the side grain. Easy to hit between the knots. The rounds crack on the first swing 9 out of 10 times.
@junkman661 A maul would be much more efficient than an axe. Axes have little taper, and not much mass. For softwoods, I'd use a maul any day. But for oak and hickory, it had better be no bigger than 12" in diameter, or you'll need some wedges.
I don't understand why ppl are still promoting these LOUD & smelly log-splitters since there are a few other, yet WAAAAYY better methods, which (also) do NOT require OIL-based products.
@kbr61 The video is to educate consumers as to a potential choice. You mention way better methods, but when I went to your channel I didn't see a video showing one of them. Why is that?
My son and I would split a littte wood with a maul and wedges and a lot of sweat. Now we split a lot of wood with a wood splitter with a little sweat.
" When the gray hair starts to grow............. they will know."
I've inherited an old 20ton craftsman splitter, but there's no manual, so I've been playing it by ear when I use it. The operation's pretty easy - it's mostly the care and maintenance that I'm concerned about.
Any suggestions?
And why did it squirt 1/2 gallon of hydraulic fluid out the release valve when I first used it? (I wasn't the one who filled it, so I have no idea how much was in the reservior).
BTW - when it comes to gnarly oak y-joints - 20ton splitters rock!
Would`nt it be more practical, to have an adjustable knife, placed in the other end? This machine should be strong enough to cut to cut the logs in four pieces....
You missed the point. Some people *can't* use a maul for all sorts of reasons. Perhaps they have a torn rotator cuff. However, they can push the lever. You have to open your mind as to the fact that not everyone has your skills or abilities.
@AsktheBuilder: a good point about the rotator cuff, but isn't that what kids, grandkids, (families) are for? :) I vote maul and more family woodcuttings!
I'm just curious... Not to be a dick or anything, but if you're physically fit enough to go saw rounds and stack them like that, why can't you split them with the maul? Don't get me wrong, they're convenient, but a little pricey if you ask me. Well, that's my peice, good video! Cheers!
and now i will still stick to a maul! these things are worthless and time consuming, by the time ya get even a half cord done with one of these i'd be done with my half and sleeping 2 hours already!
sorry your very wrong by saying they are worthless, if you have real wood that needs splitting, like bases of trees that are over a foot an a half wide they are worth there weight in gold
Why do you say that? It's just a time-tested hydraulic ram that you would find on hundreds of thousands of pieces of heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, aerial ladders, utility-company bucket trucks, etc. What's more, car mechanics work under this technology everyday!
Hydraulic failure means a little oil flow. Because it doesn't compress very much, the oil flow should be minimal, and the oil isn't very hot. It's not as if the cylinder is going to explode. Failure usually occurs at hose ends.
Well you have good reason to be concerned (that's a lot of pressure), but if this product wasn't safe, you would have heard about it by now. I honestly think your chances of getting hurt are extremely low when you're following the safety rules and guidelines in the owner's manual.
i have an electric 4 ton its good but the 5 ton would have ben better for the knoty ones not bad for $300... ? size of finel log split works best in a fireplace THKS
Tim long time reader of your newspaper column home imp advice Great that you have videos now. Thank you Tim it looks like your spliiter is not level but the column looks like it on level Great video but vertical splitting is the best ever I bet an electric start would be nice. Sure would like to try out an electic splitter .I hate the fumes from the gasoline engines and pulling that cord Thanks
English oak thats soaked up some water is a bitch to split with an axe...
Even an electric splitter would have been a godsend. I love oak. Unless i'm carrying/splitting it.
