I think our moral views should reflect the interests of human life and our well being. I also believe respecting conscious life at a universal level is a vital and fully relative to the interests of humanity.
So how to solve the abortion dilemma? I say quite simply that they should be allowed as long as no neurological developement - the start of consciounce - takes place. This way we minimise suffering, upholding conscious life values and potentially working in the interests of our species.

Well, with a concept like that - how would you deal with over-population? We already have trouble getting clean fresh water to every country, and given the globalization of the world, food shortages cause a massive problem. If every life was protected to the degree that you wanted it to be protected, how would you deal with the consequences of that? Among the women I have known who had abortions, none of them, at that terrible point in their lives, cared a hoot about over-population. Women have abortions because they feel cornered, abandoned, hopeless, scared, manipulated...and conception is the start of life!....not before! im not even going into that argument with u, because its not even an issue!
Women have various reasons for having abortions. But cause and effect remain the same.
Society is quite unwilling to deal with it - given the number of children who never end up being adopted. In fact, its a common stance now to be 'anti taxes / anti welfare' - which means that poor mothers would be even less likely to be able to support their children. I find it sick - this new combination of 'pro-life anti-welfare' wave in America.
You are yelling at me about charity work - I've done PLENTY. Its a ridiculous claim that you're making, and one that you are doing without proof. I could say the same of you - that you need to help out more and start a charity - but I'm not so ignorant as to do that. I'd prefer to think, since you are so adamantly pro-life, that you have already done similar work as I have. And I'm not looking for a useless argument as this one tends to become - as it avoids the issue.

And two - There is a key difference between an an unborn unable to live outside of a female and EVERY other time in a person's life. At every other point, you are not one hundred percent reliant on someone else just to breathe, maintain homeostasis, eat, drink, etc. - as in, you would die if you were not somehow connected to that person. So I suppose, in that developmental stage, we must decide whether you actually have your own life if you depend entirely on someone else's?
@MsbacktoNYC the main concern of the "Pro-Choicers" is not the guarded protection of the life in the womb. Instead, the main concern is the "rights" of the mother over and against the rights of the child growing in her. The child, who cannot exercise its own will, is killed. And, in order to make the killing more palatable, the baby is called a "fetus", or "non-viable", or "not yet human", etc. This eases the conscience. But, for those who say the baby isn't ' independent!

Lets consider that. Lets say all of those potential lives WERE born healthy. And a massive portion of them were put up for adoption. Not all of them - by any length - would be adopted. Therefore, they would be left to grow up and age out of the system. And statistical evidence shows that when, at eighteen, someone "ages out" they are more likely to not have a job, to end up in jail, and to wind up pregnant than their peers. Can you imagine how many more people would be homeless?

You're using this 'charitable organization' bit without thinking about how many areas do NOT have charities working there. Or areas like the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is completely war torn, and aid is NOT easy to give. After the earthquake in Haiti, food was brought that was stolen by groups with guns. These are people living in horrific situations - its not as simple as 'get them food and water'. There is a LOT of violence.

I - without a doubt - support education on sex and handing out of condoms. Yet religious institutions, for a long time, have condemned the use of contraceptives. Statistically, in America, religious teen/young women have more abortions. I don't see abortion as a "quick fix" - in fact, its quite a long term fix in certain circumstances. I look at the negatives because THESE are the issues. If we lived in a perfect, ideal world then I wouldn't have the same stance that I do now. But we don't live in said ideal world. And this "you may kill a mother teresa" argument is nonsense. Because you may, potentially, also be ridding the world of another Hitler.

Its extremely barbaric to even consider having an abortion bc you couldnt use a condom and also the law should protect those "babies" who are unable to protect themselves. In the extreme case of rape and incest i wouldnt oppose it but for normal circumstances just give it up for adoption, its unusually narcissistic to not want to be inconvenienced for 9 months and resort to murdering your own creation. It's frightening that we look at people like Hitler & Bin Laden and call them evil and murderers, but since Roe vs Wade, 40 million babies have been murdered in their own mothers wombs just in the United States alone. pisses me off that the left makes this a conservative, religious issue. There are tons of secular groups out there that promote prolife. I find it so crazy that this all happened. So woman were desperate and died before it was legalized so that means it should be legalized. I think our moral views should reflect the interests of human life and our well being. I also believe respecting conscious life at a universal level is a vital and fully relative to the interests of humanity.
So how to solve the abortion dilemma? I say quite simply that they should be allowed as long as no neurological developement - the start of consciounce - takes place. This way we minimise suffering, upholding conscious life values and potentially working in the interests of our species.

So if I was poor and if I was to keep my baby because abortion has been outlaw, does that mean you won't judge me if I was to go on welfare? Food assistance, Medicaid, WIC, temp. cash assistance, child care assistant, & section 8? Potential life does not equal human life. A fetus is a potential baby, NOT a baby. So now, I suppose you'd have to consider whether life in general is sacred. In which case, do you consider killing animals morally wrong? Since, in the same sense, its taking a life. Do you oppose war for any reason on the grounds that lives are taken? Do you believe that wealthy countries withholding food from poorer ones is murder, given that without said food people will die?

No, there is a key difference. A fetus is 100 percent dependent on a female to survive. It DOES NOT have its own life - it is dependent on someone else's life. Therefore, when a fetus is in the womb, it is QUITE distinct from every single other point in life - from a newborn to the death bed. It is not independent, it cannot maintain homeostasis.

Well, with a concept like that - how would you deal with over-population? We already have trouble getting clean fresh water to every country, and given the globalization of the world, food shortages cause a massive problem. If every life was protected to the degree that you wanted it to be protected, how would you deal with the consequences of that? And in a realistic manner - in other words, poverty is the root cause of overpopulation because farmers need extra hands.

Society is quite unwilling to deal with it - given the number of children who never end up being adopted. In fact, its a common stance now to be 'anti taxes / anti welfare' - which means that poor mothers would be even less likely to be able to support their children. I find it sick - this new combination of 'pro-life anti-welfare' wave in America.

Instead, the main concern is the "rights" of the mother over and against the rights of the child growing in her. The child, who cannot exercise its own will, is killed. And, in order to make the killing more palatable, the baby is called a "fetus", or "non-viable", or "not yet human", etc. This eases the conscience. But, for those who say the baby isn't ' independent!

Lets consider that. Lets say all of those potential lives WERE born healthy. And a massive portion of them were put up for adoption. Not all of them - by any length - would be adopted. Therefore, they would be left to grow up and age out of the system. And statistical evidence shows that when, at eighteen, someone "ages out" they are more likely to not have a job, to end up in jail, and to wind up pregnant than their peers. Can you imagine how many more people would be homeless?

Or areas like the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is completely war torn, and aid is NOT easy to give. After the earthquake in Haiti, food was brought that was stolen by groups with guns. These are people living in horrific situations - its not as simple as 'get them food and water'. There is a LOT of violence.

Abortion leaves far, far too many psychological scars. But it’s the cheap way out. Statistically, in America, religious teen/young women have more abortions. I don't see abortion as a "quick fix" - in fact, its quite a long term fix in certain circumstances. I look at the negatives because THESE are the issues. If we lived in a perfect, ideal world then I wouldn't have the same stance that I do now. But we don't live in said ideal world. And this "you may kill a mother teresa" argument is nonsense. Because you may, potentially, also be ridding the world of another Hitler.
