I've had very good luck with FROST & Steel Warrior ( Chinese) knives. The stainless steel has enough nickel for corrosion resistance but not so much that re-sharpening is difficult. I also like MTech knives for same reason. But Chipaway (Pakistan) bowie knives are not even close to BOKER , Buck, or KaBar for quality. Its fine to collect Chipaway for their interesting shapes and handle mat'ls but that's the extent of their usefulness to me. Paul in Pennsylvania
PS the Ontario has the same rugged look as the Kabar, fits the sheath left or right, and has a heavy butt cap .But I still love the Kabar and gotta get one.
Hey Jack good vid I have the big kabar and have beat the hell out of it quite a bit, there great but a bitch to sharpen once there dull, you should do a vid on sharpening knives for guys like me who aren't particularly good at it btw love your show
well, as far as "youtube knife reviews" go, yours was a lil unorthodox (no offense by any means). I must say, I rather enjoyed it. Job well done sir. I hope to see more from you. Thumbs up.
Really nice review. The laws are pretty crazy though. A quarter inch can mean the difference in being legal or illegal. Laws often do not make sense. Thanks for the review.
For cheep knives the Opinel is the best- you can get then in various sizes from key chain to big kitchen sized. They cut very very well out of the box, and you can sharpen them on the botton of a cup. The only drawbacks are that they dont open 1 handed and the ring lock takes some getting used to.In carbon steel it rocks- stainless sucks
Douk douk (cheep from garret wade tools) cuts even better and is very slim and easy tp carry. Handle not quite as nice as the Opi,
@auraofgloom The Svord Peasant knives from new zealand are pretty solid cheap knives as well. It's carbon steel, can be opened one handed, and is the best slipjoint I've seen for the money.
My only problem with the buck 110 is after 15 years the lock wore out. That being said it was THE knife I used daily until I replaced it with a Benchmade Axis lock. I now prefer that due to being left handed.
in australia knives are more expensive .. my buck 110 that i bought in queensland was $150 ... i had $600 to spare so i wasnt bothered but most would not buy it because of the price tag
That is just wrong. Texas law is very clear the only exception for a knife that is longer then specified is covered with the following directly from Texas state law,
"(4) is engaging in lawful hunting, fishing, or other sporting activity on the immediate premises where the activity is conducted, or is en route between the premises and the actor's
residence, if the weapon is a type commonly used in the activity;"
Again I am not speaking for any state except Texas
OK now the law is changed and we are both wrong. The newest rendition of Texas law now states the blade may not be longer then 5.5 inches. We seem to be loosing freedoms a 1/2 inch at a time.
Did you say 6 inch? Both my Filipino Martial Arts instructor (30 years FMA experience and lifelong Texas resident) And a retired US Marshal Service Deputy have told me it was 5 inches legal max, and Ive read that the Republic is the only state in the union that specifically bans carry of bowies, of course an irony. If you could clarify this I will check again.
@silvertondevil12 - Nope not all all, knife laws in the states vary state to state, in Arkansas there is not length limit. Most states place the limit in the 5.5 to 6 inch range. Again though if you are fishing, hunting, camping, wild crafting etc, there is no problem with a longer blade.
I believe your knife steel is not 420HC but 425M (modified). Based on when you said it was purchased. They switched to 420HC in the early 90's.

A nice compromise between the 5" and the 7" Kabar is the Ontario 499 ASEK. It has a 5"blade but a substantial handle and comes with a stone.

I have small hands. The full size kabar handle is too big for me. I love the small handle. Whatever works!

good knife, not a fan of those style of fixed blades though, preffer Helle. Buck 110 is an awesome knife, can't hurt having one on you at all times.

It absolutely is six inches. Being a Filipino MA instructor doesn't have anything to do with Texas state law.
